Great idea Billy. If the bead was a tight friction fit (perhaps a rubber bead?) it could be pushed up to cinch the loop of the dongle onto the hook without any elastic.
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch Жыл бұрын
Hi salt. The bait Elastic, is just to simplify it. I think everyone has bad elastic. What I use personally, is a bead and a small piece of silicone tubing, it's nice because the carbs are slightly different sizes. But a rubber bead under that, could be good. Can you get them in eight or ten mm?

Awww sweet, a crab carousel 🎠 I'm going to try this in miniature for North Wales size cod and smoothies, it might just keep the dogs away a bit in spring, I normally use prawns but dogs love em too. I'll incorporate it into my (newly invented?) lead bait clip that involves a bit of grip wire twisted around my long nosed dumpy grip lead with the tag bent down at about 45°. When the bait disengages the clip drops down the shaft and sits over the lead bit clear of my sliding up and over rigs. I suppose you could have both ends bent down instead of an angel clip. Not sure if that makes sense but HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉 👍

When we use crabs for Blackfish off the New Jersey coast, it's always recommended that some damage be done to the shell to encourage the crab's juices to trail down the current. We use smaller green or whiteleg crabs and will use shears to take off a corner of their shell or put a cut across their belly. Fish on, friend!

You asked for feedback, Billy, and I think your design is great. Holding that crab on while you retrieved it through a substantial surf and over a VERY rough bottom proves the point. Please forgive my Yankee ignorance, but why did you need a crab setup that didn't include wrapping the bait onto the hook with elastic cord? On to Norway! Chris (Maine, USA)
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch 7 ай бұрын
Hi Chris. The reason I chose to do it this way is because, of the circle hook the bait works best below it. Also it is always best if you don't use bait elastic. For instance if you're fishing in Clearwater when presenting the crab in a natural manner, also the crabs shell and the barnacles always seem to snap the elastic. Thanks Brother 😁👌
@labtrainer09
@labtrainer09 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, Billy. For many years, I caught and used hard-shelled green crabs to catch tautog, a tasty, hard-fighting member of the wrasse family, here in New England, USA. But because my casts were always short (around 10 meters/30 feet) and the retrieves were virtually vertical , attaching a crab (whole or half) to the 3/0 hook we used wasn't a problem. We simply drove the hook into and through the shell. Your challenge was/is far more difficult. Interesting stuff, Chris

You are going about this all the wrong way, what you want to do is go and buy a pair of women’s tights, cut into small sections, put lots of hard crabs into it, crushed it up and then feed your fishing hook through the tights. This works really well. Also keep up the good work. I love watching the videos and if you’re ever up north give me a shout
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch Жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, I disagree. What I'm trying to do is present hardback in a realistic way, and casted a long distance. The method you propose is what they use in Scotland and the north of England and Wales, they call it cart. And it is only really good for cod. Thanks for writing in Brother, fish on👍🙂

Thanks Billy, I was eagerly awaiting part 2 🙂 The hardback crabs we use here in NZ for Smoothounds are called Paddle Crabs and they are smaller than the one you used. We typically use those that are 25-40mm across whole, with anything bigger being cut up and used in sections ('hounds only have small mouths). What I do with the smaller ones we use whole is kill it first, then put the circle hook through the top of it's head - in by left claw, out by the right claw - and then lash it vertically with latex elastic (a bit like the vertical wraps you do with your big mackerel baits). I leave the legs on and you end up with a very natural looking bait. No good for distance casting, but most of the beaches I fish are deep and shelving. In summary, my crab is mostly (90%) below the hook and looks much like yours but with the legs still on.
@Billyfishing_watch
@Billyfishing_watch Жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. It something we need over here, badly. And we have it now. The legs are all ways optional. Bait all ways fish better with out elastic. So in close,or out far. I think it a great way to fish bait. Thanks Brother, fish on 👍😁

I have looked at a lot of your videos and have not found any where Bass are the target fish. I am interested in how you would dispatch a Bass, I take a few fish to eat. I take fish that are just above the 42cm size but always return larger or smaller fish. I kill them with a blow to their head, I have seen that you use a spike and a wire do you find it works for Bass as their skulls are so hard? Sorry me message is sooo long 👍🎣

When the smooth hounds are in all I fish with is hard backs never soft backs. Since it's cod season it's well worth doing just remember don't take the female ones because we need those in season! Just a tip of you didn't know , grab one of the small crabs and keep the legs on bind them to the shank of the hook with elastic. Job done bass will take them no issue mainly at midday on over cast.
