At the end of June, Tuesday Morning asked to convert its Chapter 11 to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy (total liquidation), which will be considered by the bankruptcy court on July 27th. This has probably been inevitable since the May 2nd announcement, but it seems like they waited about two months to pull that trigger in hopes of someone coming in to rescue them...
@wolfgang1097 Жыл бұрын
@gordontaylor2815 In my opinion, they shouldn't have bothered with Chapter 11 honestly as that just basically delayed the inevitable; they obviously should have just filed for Chapter 7 altogether right away in the first place. No reorganization case, nothing. It would have put the company out of its misery sooner.

I think what did Tuesday Morning in isn’t a change in shopper mentality. People still go to stores looking for bargains (hence the appeal of TJMaxx, Ross, Burlington, Big Lots, etc.). But most of those are known for people scoring great deals on things people actually need and use (clothing, furniture, cookware, etc.). The problem with Tuesday Morning is that they buy a lot of schlock-tchotchkes and white elephants that no one needs. About 15-20 years ago they had a TV ad campaign where they would show a product that they claimed they had the previous week, and then they scolded people for not coming in to shop. The tagline was something like “Didn’t get here last week. Better get here next week.” Veiled threats aside, the products they showed to entice us were usually something with no practical purpose. A porcelain gnome comes to mind. It just wasn’t a compelling reason to go. They could have turned this around by inviting social media influencers to come shop and then “haul” their purchases online… but they seem firmly stuck in the 1980s.

Yep. That, and at least in the case of my location, they raised their prices. I used to wade through the aisles of out-of-fashion toys and mug warmers (or whatever) because I’d always come home with some kind of fancy body scrub, or a candle, gourmet olives, maybe European chocolate or cookies…. But they stopped giving good deals on those things. They started knocking maybe a buck off of full retail for these little luxuries. So after several trips of leaving empty handed I pretty much forgot the store existed.

The only time I was in a Tuesday Morning, it was to get something advertised in the current week's ad (A cat tree). I looked around, didn't find it. Asked a worker. He didn't know what I was talking about. Showed him the ad, said they didn't have them. I left and never went back.

Former employee. The corporate bosses never listened to employee suggestions on what could have been done to improve daily operations. Corporate would only come in to yell about numbers . They were individuals that I had never actually worked with in the store . Tuesday was severely under the public’s radar due to very little advertising and almost non-existing online store presence. They had a failed attempt at a rewards program.The stores wouldn’t stick to its own company exchange and return policy. If someone was a big enough tyrant they would get all money back on returns way past 30 days . (Months) sometimes it was over $100.00 in cash.

The problem with treasure hunting is nowadays with the internet in our pockets we can compare online to see if a price is actually good or not. And these stores have lots of weird brand electronics so when you go to try to look for reviews you can't find out anything so then are hesitant to buy from unknown brands. At least with online brands online we can look at reviews to assist with decision making.

Well but technically stories like Ollie's bargain outlet functions off of the same basic idea. You know it's pretty much you all the sudden decide you need an air fryer so you're going to stop by Ollie's and literally go in there and hunt for that particular item and of course whatever bargain they may have available on it. Odd lots otherwise known as Big lots has functioned off of that concept for multiple decades dating back to the 70s. So to me I don't really think that their story is really any worse than any other close out retailer. Now I will say there might be something to be said about the selection of items in the store, I mean if they're not placing a lot of emphasis on having air fryers vacuum cleaners maybe a few odds and ends for your car versus they want you to buy funny shaped chairs for the kids then yeah okay that's where they are screwing things up and it's not very good... Of course I will say that a lot of companies tend to just buy what they can get for cheap that they figured they can mark up so perhaps the company needs to evaluate its product buyers. And then of course if they have regional product buyers you know they need to re-examine them and find out what they know or what they don't know because that could easily be a problem if you're buying products that notoriously do not sell well in a certain area then it's kind of dumb to buy them on clothes out thinking that you two can sell them even if the price is 20% lower than it would be at the conventional retailer it's either people want those products or they don't you can't force them to take those products just because you put a lower price on them. And I will say that there's a whole host of retailers that have failed to adjust to this they're still stuck back in the 90s if not early to mid-2000s in the full swing of the bubble economy people had or at least seemingly had money hanging out of their ass and they went in and bought nearly anything they didn't really care that it was crap they didn't need. I can remember all through the decade of the 90s stories like de Jones and of course just about every format of the dollar store there was Ben's filled with literally Jack but they also seem to sell a hell of a lot of it that's why they continuously carried it. At some point the crash happened and all of it was finally recognized as bloat the 90s and even up to the mid-2000s had a terrible bloat in retail a large portion of that merchandise I'm pretty certain is what's floating around and half your clothes out stores are even your flea markets by now I mean it's still kind of in play they never really got rid of half of it I mean there's been some videos here on KZbin about retailers that left warehouses just full of shit. And I will do that they'll write stuff off and then they'll just straight up abandon it and of course all of this is a huge sign that there's an income deficiency across the population they can't sell things even good stuff that isn't necessarily junk.

Well I will say that it's very common of members of the public standing on the outside of any given store to make the observation that the store was always busy followed by a closed that's a common scene amongst the public they think that just because the store is busy there shouldn't have been any trouble. Of course this is a general statement I'm not trying to say that that's what you yourself are implying. As far as expansive retail areas go, I don't necessarily think that that would have hurt their business per se simply because they become part of the variety offered in that area a lot of it I think has to come down to the fact that perhaps their products were not tailored to what most people in the area would care to buy a lot of retailers have this problem I'm certain they're not the only one. Of course you also have the situation to where chain stores even some of the best performing locations can fall subject to store closure if the bigger company decides to close stores of that region. I watched this happen in the early '90s with Kmart and of course we saw it again through the years with Kmart and other assorted retailers. did they would be decent performing stores but because the company was restructuring and they said that we're going to close ex number of locations they would seemingly at random just pick an area and say it's underperforming and then they would go through and just close all the stores I would argue bad management Plato factor in that and of course this could be a problem plaguing this particular company bad management is not nor will it ever be a New concept.

Well they basically figured that if the two companies merged at the time it would give them a total of 5% of the retail market which happened in 2005! @American-Motors-Corporation Жыл бұрын
Of course another thing to be said about the selection of inventory and a lot of these places, is simply with the bigger retailers scaling back there's most likely going to be a lot less to choose from and then of course you have flation to battle at the same time so to be honest a lot of these companies going forward will definitely experience problems most of which will most likely cause their businesses to contract to say the least otherwise many of them are going to go out of business. This would include even the little palette businesses that I had mentioned in my previous comment. If the retailers particularly that of the big boys are scaling back what they're carrying which they are and we've all seen the obvious signs such as they're eliminating shelvings or moving existing shelving over this is why the aisles are getting wider they're trying to minimize what they carry and they're only trying to focus on items that they are certain people will buy. So basically the retail market is adjusting it's moving towards putting a lot less emphasis on the wants and more on the needs. So yes they will carry a lot of items that you don't need that's still going to be there however they're trying to hone in on what products would sell the most frequently kind of like department stores of the old days that if they carried items above 50 or above $100 they didn't have an abundance of those items because those items were not expected to sell all that quickly instead they placed emphasis on the common items that were below $50 that would sell so you could argue that they're basically turning back the clock the days of shop till you drop are not and I'm afraid those days are not coming back. So these companies like Walmart Target Macy's Kohl's pennies etc even your dollar stores they're not going to be ordering all that much inventory that would cause a major excess of inventory that they would then have to sell off to companies like this or odd lots or Ollie's in other words if those companies wish to stay in business then they're going to be forced to buy those products directly from the manufacturer or supplier just like the big boys already do and here's the problem their businesses aren't exactly set up to do that because of the costs involved they could do it but of course this would mean price hikes across the store and then all the sudden they lose their appeal so it basically kills them in the long run! You have to think about these format of retailers being basically a clearing House for the bigger part of the retail industry. Of course you have tons and tons of retailers that win an item expires otherwise known as pennies out it is literally thrown down the shoot in the garbage they don't ship it to anywhere the only time that Walmart in the gang would be selling pallets of items to these people or even individuals is basically when those items are somewhere between a warehouse or perhaps at the originating Warehouse once it goes into the store it will never leave the store and the only way it will leave the store is in a trash truck. So this also brings up the concept of cash flow what is this company's cash flow or what would be Big lots cash flow? In other words just how much can they realistically buy at a time and how much can they realistically shove through their stores at a time then you have to take an account each store's location so a lot of items that they might be able to go in and buy when a retailer shuts down a location or perhaps a retailer goes completely out of business they show up and buy x amount of the inventory so are they buying a million dollars worth or are they buying $30,000 worth here's the deal the location of those stores some stores would do better than others so then you have a problem to where you shove this inventory in all of your locations only to find out that half of the locations may not be able to sell half of what you've purchased then you're going to take a bath in then the only thing that you can do with that point would be to try it to remove it from the non-selling stores and put it in the stores that it might move problem is the shipping cost of doing this of moving the product around on a continuous basis in order to try and get rid of it at this day and age class more than the Damned items worth in other words I'm saying that there is a huge situation to wear even companies like Big lots or half into throw away a lot of shit that doesn't sell in a certain amount of time the costs are going too high to run these businesses. I've always said that the back end of the store actually cost more to run than the front end of the store this is true don't believe me consult with a local business owner I guarantee they'll tell you the same thing.

My wife was a manager of a Tuesday morning store and The corporate office treated their employees like shit, and they actually let people steal from their stores because they tell their managers and the employees that if somebody steals don’t do anything just let them be because they’re afraid of a lawsuit and then that they’ll lose customers if you steal from them, you’re not a customer The corporate office from Tuesday mornings does not have their employee interest. They don’t have their backs if there’s a customer complaint, they automatically take the customer side even know that the manager of the store was right they reprimand the manager for that customer complaint because the manager didn’t give them a discount and then the corporate office reprimand the manager and gives that customer the discount plus to keep them coming back no wonder why Tuesday morning just going out of business

i haven't been in Tuesday Morning by where i live since i had to do the inventory for it 20 years ago. It had nowhere near the stuff you showed in the video. The store employee said it was just a discount store for the upscale crowd. she was right, you could go to flea markets and antique stores for better deals on the same stuff. plus the one where i live could be in a better location. The Tuesday morning sign is out by the road but the actual store is in a building behind another building that absolutely hides it from the street. I am totally surprised it has lasted this long if it's other store locations are like that

I remember going to our local Tuesday Morning when I was a kid in the 90s/early 00s a lot. They had some cool toys like this felt dollhouse set that I slowly collected pieces for over time when we went. Can't say I recall the stores interior ever being particularly memorable compared to Walmart, Target or any other big box retailer at the time

I've heard of Tuesday Morning, but never really shopped there. I've passed by their stores, but wasn't sure what kind of store it was. In my opinion, the name Tuesday Morning sounded like a "fashion clothing" store or a hair salon, the type that sold overpriced clothes that hardly anyone wore or they'd charge $65 for a haircut that the average hairstylist would charge $30 for. After watching this, I wouldn't want to shop there. I agree with another commenter on this video, this store looks like they're stuck in the 80's!

I go to the TM about once a month. Like you said, I’m usually just tooling around looking for something interesting at a good price. There’s two near me: one small, one large, and both in great locations so usually crowded. I was actually surprised last visit last week to see the small store was closing. I got some towels on clearance. Spotted a nice table but made the mistake of going to eat lunch next for first as it was gone when I went back. I’ve gotten some nice things there and good deals. I’m a woodworker so was thrilled last year when I bought a damaged table for next to nothing and was able to easily and seamlessly repair it! But I can see how that’s not really a sustainable business model for a store!

My wife used to drag me to TM all the time and none of the locations here in Vegas looked like that. They were usually much smalle and over loaded with product. That was a whole different dog with a different set of fleas. Still, we found a lot of great deals there. The rug under my desk right now came from TM and we paid about a third of what we would have paid elsewhere. It's held up for over 10 years which is more than I can say for any other rug we have,

Bankrupt again for the second time. Just like Kmart. Kmart filed in 2002, and then merged with Sears in 2004. Bankrupt again in 2018 but this time took Sears down with them. Some of these retailers are having problems. Bed Bath and Beyond is also in trouble.

So the first time I want to these they MOSTLY had stuff from Target, and the discounts were pretty great. I watched as they gradually got more and more no-name merch where you have to research to see if it's even a quality item. That experience, having to product research everything, at that point you feel like you're already shopping online anyway. When it was all stuff I could recognize from other retailers as being at least decent, so I could just SHOP.

@American-Motors-Corporation Жыл бұрын
Well there's definitely something to be said about the bargain outlet type format that attempts to appeal either to a higher class group of people or those who just think that they're of a higher class. Frankly it doesn't necessarily work out all that much it's kind of like all these bargain outlet is a messy store and of course they even have banners hanging up all about how they're messing it's just part of the facade of the place. But I can certainly say that when they first came to my town I wasn't really all that impressed because to me they were a bit higher price than Big lots of course over the years I've noticed that Big lots has attempted to move upscale and as a result their prices have went up they're not exactly the cheap store that they used to be which is why most of us when we want cheap things we go to Dollar general family Dollar and or Dollar tree. As far as the junkiness of the products go well what that means is basically they have buyers that don't know what the hell they're doing plain and simple. Of course common knowledge of retail is simply the retail business is much like the entertainment business you can't necessarily keep people happy all the time and you're certainly not going to please everyone. So it's true that what you saw is junkie products or perhaps even 10 people that you know agree that it's junkie products the truth is there's 10 if not 20 other people out there that didn't see it as junkie on the other hand if the entire area believes that it's crap then that location will lose out on business. So the problem with an El cheapo discounter pretending to go upscale particularly not necessarily with the format of the store but definitely with the prices being much higher is that they have to be careful about what area they go into you don't want it too upscale but you don't want it to downscale it can be a bitch to place the store and mistakes are made frequently unfortunately for most companies. Most companies that exist and or have ever existed they all have at least one location if not five locations that should have never been they've all made those mistakes and here's the problem if you get management that does not care where they're put in stores then those problems will be repeated very very frequently!
@RampagingChipmunk Жыл бұрын
The shopping experience itself is bland and not fun, but I have occasionally found decent stuff at Tuesday Morning. The problem is that the prices are pretty comparable to other non-discount stores so you aren’t really getting much of a deal at all by shopping there.

It reminds me a lot of K Mart and their "keep doing the same thing, even if it doesn't work well" philosophy. Gonna miss my hometown TM in Maryland so much, but it’s true lately things have been more hit and miss. Used to be able to find stellar cotton bath towels or 100% cotton bedding or nice pillows for a deal, but now everything is cheap polyester. Still, it was also my go-to place for off-the-wall gifts my family depends on me getting them, so will be sad to see them go. The only two stores left in the state are in the most bizarre out of the way places.

The only time I went to Tuesday Morning was during Christmas. The rest of the time it was pointless. There was a really nice Tuesday Morning in a brand new commercial space that made me actually want to shop there. Every other one I've seen has been like those shown in the videos, dark and depressing. Unfortunately that particular store closed 2 years ago. I'd rather go to Home Goods / TJMaxx for the kind of shopping they're designed for. Their stores are cleaner, well lit, organized and you can find some random good deals occasionally.

I went to a store we saw in the north valley after visiting a different store (so just a random visit to look for "treasure"). There were no signs about that store closing but I did notice they had a 10% off everything offer. My thoughts were that it was well overpriced for the items that were in the store. Its somewhere I used to go to see what British foods etc theyd picked up to grab myself a bargain but even the stuff they had on "sale" was well over the price Id expect to pay. Also my main take from that particualr store was the intense buzzing coming from somewhere in the electrical lights. It wasnt just one as it seemed to emanate on each side of the store, to the point of being painful if you stayed there for very long. Im guessing they must only employ hard of hearing staff there as it would have driven my mad being near it more that 20 minutes. I left the store without a purchase which summed up my disappointment really.

A Tuesday Morning opened in my town, lasted maybe a couple of years. I never went in because the exterior looked drab and nondescript and the name gave me no idea what the store was about. I barely identified it as a store, much less as a close-out discounter. Big Lots!/Pic 'n Save and Burlington (when it was Burlington Coat Factory) at least have a somewhat descriptive name, and Marshall's and TJ Maxx look attractive enough on the outside for you to take a closer look. Tuesday Morning spells its name in the plainest sans serif font I have ever seen on a storefront, and it means... what now?

The Tuesday Mornings where I live, went from selling junk to selling straight goods on the shelves. Very expensive goods. They carried a lot of stuff I really wanted, but their prices were the same at 40% + off, as they were at Target or Home Goods, or even at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Just WAY out of my price range.....although I did splurge once and bought a small ceramic mixing bowl for $15. I bought it because it was a special type, and a type I have been looking for, for many years. So I grabbed it. But yeah, the first time I went into a Tuesday Morning years and years ago, it looked like a dump truck had backed up and just dumped a load of garbage into an empty store. The most recent one I went into was clean, bright, cheery, and was fully stocked with tons of neat stuff that was brand new..........but extremely high priced for what they were. I've been meaning to go back, because I just love window shopping in there........but I guess its probably closed by now. I will have to check just out of curiosity now.

In 2018 I saw a help wanted sign at one in illinois. I stopped to talk to the manager and they said that it was for warehouse/receiving... but would require you to get in a 7a, then open the store at 10a, be the only worker for the first 2 hours, then back to the stocking of items from the dock for the rest of your shift. They were offering $8.25/hr. I literally laughed and the manager said "yea, nobody in their right mind would agree to this." For reference, the Panda Express down the road was starting cashiers at 50% more without the tasks of unloading trucks, stocking pallets, being a key-holder, and working alone.

I just noticed a Tuesday Morning location here in Louisville, near an Ollie's and Harbor Freight I stopped at the other day. I noticed it was very bare looking, possibly entirely empty. I didn't know whether it was in the process of opening or closing. Now I know. I may stop by again and see if there's still anything left. I'd love to see videos about Ollie's or Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight was a laughingstock for a very long time---a place where you could go to get tools as long as your life or your livelihood didn't depend on those tools. They had good deals on consumable items but their tools were to be avoided, especially power tools. All of that has changed now. They now have a good, better, best strategy where they still have their lower-end brands but are also selling some premium stuff under new brands they've created. They were known for their coupons and then they did away with them and seriously upset some customers, including me. Now they have brought the coupons back but only in digital form. For a while in 2021, they were rapidly moving away from their customer base by seemingly ditching all of their lower-end tools and jacking their prices up as much as possible. Due to a lot of customer outcry, they have since reversed course and are trying to still offer good deals and promote some of their lower-end brands.

My local store is among those on the closing list after being open for a few years (IIRc they took over some long vacant space that was once part of a Goody's clothing store) . It doesn't look much different from the video, and it was often hard to tell where the store ended and the stockroom began. I never bought anything there, but wondered around a few times out of curiosity. Apparently the Packard Bell brand never died out in Europe (the story is that the brand didn't have the sub-par quality reputation it had in the US so it stuck around) and they must have figured that by now in the US, people have forgotten about the poor quality and/or feel nostalgia. I actually saw a PB branded phone holder and webcam at one of the department stores at the local mall (which, despite being a mall and having seen better days, is not dead)

The store my me closed a while back. It was in a newly build building and they were the first tenant and was next to a Best Buy. I went in when they first open with someone and again one other time and did buy something, but that was it. The name never made sense as when I lived in another city and first saw one of their stores, it was never open. I really thought maybe they were only open on a Tuesday Morning and I was at work so would miss it. The fixtures are more industrial then regular retail shelving, so their could be a better market for them and could sell at a higher price than just offering them at store closings.
