Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZG 5.9 V8 really better than the smaller Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 5.2 V8?

The 5.2 is the original old school. The Chrysler 318 is the last good purely chrysler engine. Power isn't everything.

Both are 5.2 Both have painted stripes on the body, both have the same grills, same hoods, same rims, same badges. The 5.9 version had many differences from the 5.2. Both cars are 5.2 Limited

I agree. I dont know which jeep has which engine, but the green jeep was spinning 3 wheels while the purple jeep was ultimately a 2wd, one in the front and one in the rear.

I feel like the v8 4.7 would beat both the 5.2 and 5.9 because it makes more torque in low rpm

The purple is my 5.2 ZJ without LSD. The Black 5.9 have LSD in the rear axle.

I bought my '95 ZJ with 32,000 miles on it, and at 336,000 miles it was still going strong - never had the head off the engine - until it was rear-ended by a Peterbuilt and "totaled"...4.0 Forever!

5.2 all the way, revs quicker launches better then a 5.9 and its internally balanced vs externally balanced 5.9. Not to beat anybodies 5.9 down but remember the 318 5.2 is the perfect medium plenty or power and torque and comes in a little quicker then the slightly sluggisher big brother 5.9 + 5.2’s are reliable as hell kinda like the 5.0’s from F150’s (90’s era)

I think the 5.9 revs way quicker under load. And i feel like in the case of the jeep the 5.9 would be better. Less throttle required for movement, the 5.9 is a torquey small block with big block potential cant beat that. The 5.2 is a very nice motor tho, i want one but i dont have a vehicle for it lol

So I have that 5-9 in my Dodge Ram the only thing that makes the five nine different from the five two is the heads and I think the crank other than that same block and everything only about 15 horsepower difference is well depending on what year it is

Heads, compression ratio, pistons, cam, lifters.. Have had 5.9 both la block motors and early 70's old school, la block 5.2's, and the 3.9 v6. All decent motors, but hate every chrysler auto after the og 727 auto transmission. Wish all auto makers would spend the time engineering and money for better transmissions, could be planned obsolescence too...

Yes, the reason why I bought a 2000 Dodge Ram after my 88 Dodge Dakota with 3.9 v6 Quit. Well, the motor didn't really quit what happened. Is it basically electrical gave up on the truck So that's why I bought a 2000 Dodge Ram cuz I know it was still sort of old fool under the hood. It still had a distributor cap. The simple 5.9 liter V8, it loves gas, but it takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I just don't care for the new new vehicles anymore. They just are money pits. And I'm totally happy driving a good old reliable vehicle.

Auto makers are just pandering to market trying to keep afloat in todays market, well kinda have been since the start but in dumber ways now due to people "wanting" safer vehicles.. Irony being, the easier stuff is to operate the less engaged and attentive some are which creates complacency, which is more dangerous for everyone. I guess I am old school; I prefer over built, manuel windows, manual transmissions, no computers, no electronic sensors, easy maintenence, and much less plastic vehicles. Lol Cheers man 👍

Bore and stroke are different between 318/360. HP is nearly identical at 235 but 5.9 torque is a little more. IF it has the Mopar preformance computer which all 98 5.9 jeeps came with then the 360/5.9 goes to 245 hp. Great motors but not the same hence 5.2 vs 5.9 MOPAR2YA

Great engines too bad the transmissions usually goes before anything else, I've owned two 5.2 zj and the mileage isn't an issue it's really about how it was maintained and "offroad" hours it has, doing bad torque converter on my 96 orvis rn I've heard the 5.9 have issues with reverse going bad and not the easiest to work on since such a large drivetrain fit into a truck that size

@@brandonpurple8938 I changed my cam and Harland sharp rolling rockers, unfortunately in the UK we don't get the 5.2 or 5.9 but if you get a chance check out new comer racing, up to 700hp out of a 4.0 which I think is wow I thought getting 500hp was good, I would love to get 5.9 v8 and see what it could do😁👍

@@stuartlenk9436 you will want adjustable arms if you go that high otherwise you will get bad vibrations. I went with Core4*4 arms and track bars, Rubicon express 4.5 springs, and Bilstein 5100 shocks.

Its the old Dodge 360 cubic inch V8; a longer bore version of the 340. Great engine, easy to build torque and horsepower cheap.
