Tugs are vessels designed to carry out towing maneuvers of ships or floating devices in open waters. It may also be involved in ship port entrances and exits, but this will be a second job for this type of ship. The principles behind offshore towing are simple. The tugboat drags the towed vessel by its stern by means of a rope or cable; once marching speed is reached, the towed vessel offers resistance to forward movement that must be counteracted by the power supplied by the tugboat. Towing bolts are installed on ships both bow and stern so that, in the event that the ship can be towed (bow bollards) or towed (stern bolts), the towing line can be made firm . The towing bitts are calculated based on the breaking load of the towing line that must be carried by any vessel that has an equipment number less than 5800. In principle, it is preferable to do the towing operation with the towed line of the vessel and not of the tugboat. In this way, it is known that the means where the rope is made firm will correctly withstand the tension of the rope and will break before the towing bitts are pulled out.
