Great video and family fun. A few suggestions: bleed the mullet as soon as you dump them out of the net; immediately after bleeding, get them in a saltwater slurry (mullet are very oily and will heat up quickly); avoid eating blood meat by cutting it out or scraping off after cooking. Mullet is my favorite for smoked fish dip.

I love to catch and eat smoked mullet myself. For those that don’t have a smoker, try scaling and gutting the mullet. Put them on the grill with the dorsal fin between the grates so they are belly up. Add some seasoning, liquid smoke and garlic butter to the belly cavity. Slow cook @ 200 degrees until the meat is flaky. Tastes almost as good as smoking them. What’s left over I make chip dip out of.

I definitely love smoked but not a fan of fried mullet. The roe is like cornbread when I smoked it. A friend of mine cans mullet and says it’s not fishy at all. Have some buddies who commercial fish them and I help out every now and then. It’s a sight to see all the guys castnetting in some of the worst conditions of the year when they run. I’ve had them swimming around the deck with all the water we were talking on.

I live in Mobile,Al and we eat mullet every you just prepared it. My tip would be to bleed them immediately when you catch them and when you filet them leave a little meat on the skin . In other words don’t rub your knife on against the skin like you normally do when filleting a fish. That leaves that dark meat attached to the skin and makes it taste less fishy. I love the roe, but I have noticed the taste is not consistent from fish to fish. I think the flavor depends on how long the mullet has been carrying the eggs. Anyway, great video !

sooo,, ok! I lived in Florida for 17 years, and never tried mullet. Then 10 years ago we moved to the southeast coast of NC and I hear anglers talking about eating it. So of course I had to try it! Now the gentleman that was telling me about fixing it says he does it on the half shell, on the grill. He said throw it scale side down and let it cook until you don't see any more oil dripping out of it. No more oil, it's ready to eat. Well, I can't use a grill at our rental property, so I filleted it off the skin and bones and deep fried it. I tried frying it the same as any other fish for the first piece, and didn't really care for it,, a little too strong tasting to me. So I fried the next piece longer,, till it was a deep golden brown. That piece was delicious! At least I thought so,, my wife still didn't care for it. Now I see your version of it with smoking it,,, and I can't wait till next fall when the big roe mullet come through! And I'm for sure doing the dip with it! But question: what wood did you use for the smoke? By the way,, first time seeing you and I'm subscribed! Looking forward to more videos/recipes! Maybe I'll share my false albacore dip recipe with you!

I was raised eating fried mullet. My Daddy had a mullet boat we would catch hundreds of pounds. The row was a treat!!! The panhandle is where we would be in the choctawhachee bay all the time!! We had a secret recipe called southern fried mullet!!!

Here in the south of Brazil we usually fish for mullets during may to june...fried or grilled mullets are tasty. U can check for "tainhas em florianopolis" and you're gonna see it.

@@TugTrashOutdoors Unfortunately they do not exist in Argentina, I used them as bait while in Miami, a city that I discovered thanks to a transfer made by the company where I worked, and I stayed in that city for 9 years, then I returned to California, where the headquarters was.

@@cesar1534 pretty cool! What did you like more Miami or California?

@@TugTrashOutdoors Both states are beautiful, Florida is very humid, hot and with a lot of vegetation. With extraordinary fishing for monster fish! California dry, desert, poor vegetation. It never rains in southern California, and the fish in the Pacific are much smaller than in Florida. I'm sorry... there are no lobsters in California.

Hey there Tug. Well I have never try this ☺. If I see you trying and eating I know to try it as well. I would have some good hot sauce to put my ROE in. Are maybe make some grits and mix the roe and grits. I've had to say this was interesting to watch.

I grew in central Florida. Cock roach bay , in Tampa , fl was our feeding grounds. I Was 5 ,y,u years old left at the boat ramp all day. Dirt poor. I learned on .my own catch crabs . Going through rocks big stone crabs back then around all around there. I got tore up by zto e crabs . But I learned shjt I was hungry. I could tell you un believable stories a bout growing in Ft.Meade, fl next to Peace river. Another good source for protein. A Another story. We'd be up all b Night cleaning mullet after a good Gill netting haul. It would carry 4 families through a week. We HAD to have it to eat. I grew up to be an all state linebacker from mullet. Love that roe. Come on Son.
