Tula's Endless Summer

5 жыл бұрын

The Tula Shop - tulasendlesssummer.com/shop-tula/ We left Coinjock, NC and motored up the icw to a free dock in Portsmouth, VA where we stayed the night then continued the next day into the mouth of the Chesapeake. We couldnt make up our minds which route to take but ultimately found great sailing conditions in the ocean on our way up to Lewes, DE.

All US Navy ships have names. google USS (and the #). e.g. USS 55 = USS Stout (DDG-55) is the fifth Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. Also will see who it is named after and it's war service. USS 78 would have been the aircraft carrier "Gerald R Ford" # 107 is the "Gravely" @12:51 is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. etc for each number you saw. Thoroughly enjoyed the vlog and narration. 👍👍👍👍👍

The Lightship Ambrose (LV87) is open to visitors at the South Street Seaport NY. Lightship Ambrose was the name given to multiple lightships that served as the sentinel beacon marking Ambrose Channel, New York Harbor 's main shipping channel. The first lightstation was established south of the Ambrose Channel off of Sandy Hook, NJ in 1823.

In the early '90's there were a lot of base closures and consolidation. A lot of east coast ships had their home ports shifted to Norfolk. I was on a ship in Newport, RI at the time and ended up down there. Each class of ship in the Navy performs a specific job. On another note a did a trip form LI to Yorktown on the outside and it was great! Took about 55 hours total from Port Washington.

The ship in your video that was coming into port with the number 6 on it was at one time the USS Supply AOE-6. I was what the navy calls a "Plankowner" for the ship. Basically that means I was part of the 1st crew. We commissioned her in February 1994 in San Diego California. She was sadly decommissioned in 2001. She is now USNS Supply T-AOE-6 which is part of the Military Sealift Command.

I was told the numbers on the super structure of US Navy carriers used to represent the number of gross tons x 1000 (dry weight). This also serves as a far recognition symbol. Today I believe the number on Carriers is just sequential. The CVN on carriers stands for Cruiser Voler Nuclear, voler as in flight!

All Navy ships have a number that denotes their class and associated name. For instance: 78 is USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) which is our newest aircraft carrier. There are several active 72s currently in the Navy fleet... USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is the fifth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Mahan (DDG-72) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and USS Vella Gulf (CG-72) is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser.

Darn, During my early years in the Coast Guard, I lived on the Thomas Point Light Station which was out in the Chesapeake Bay about 5 miles south of Annapolis. I had hoped you might capture it on film. Ironically, I was later stationed at Elizabeth City, N.C.for several years and fished in the Albemarle Sound often and also went thru Coinjock on my regular trips out to the Outer Banks to go fishing on my off days.

There what's a light ship that used to be anchored off of New York New Jersey area called the New York Bight The ship was called the Ambrose Lightship. Wondering how you like yourself Feathering props? Another question for you is how much water do you draw when you're maxed out on fuel and water as well as provisions? Fair Winds and following Seas...... Not to Nit pick but Norfolk is pronounced Nor-Fuk. I was stationed at NAS Oceania nearby so as a Yankee I was corrected repeatedly about the name. Hahaha! You have all those Ships coming from the port of Norfolk as well as Baltimore, pretty daunting task to navigate. That Navy ship that you passed was a refueler. Looks like you're going in the south channel at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Norfolk is the largest navy base in the world bar none. Some of the Navy ship numbers you mentioned our Arleigh burke-class Destroyers. Around 86 ships and submarines are homeported at Norfolk. The refuelers are not really Navy ships that begin with USS. They're USNS with a mostly civilian crew and most of them are refueling ships and ships that carry ammo and dry stores such as food, beans and bullets. Call sign Scar

Next time through Virginia, you should stop in Yorktown (York River Yacht Haven). You can learn a little history while you're there. That's where Washington defeated Cornwallis. You should also visit Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, which is where the country really got started. It's all right there and worth a day or two. As for the Navy, the Naval Station Norfolk supports the operational readiness of the US Atlantic Fleet, providing facilities and services to enable mission accomplishment. The numbers on the ships are the hull numbers and identify what type of ship it is, i.e. CVN is a carrier, etc. I'm enjoying the videos. Keep them coming.

Curious if you ever find the need for AC or Heat on the boat. Heat is a little easier to fix if you just follow the seasons north and south but AC not so much. When I was your ages I chartered in the Caribbean in the summer months and could handle the heat 24/7 but now I want a gen and AC. That of course greatly changes the math on monthly expenses as I contemplate the cruising life for a few years when I retire. Marinas and or using a bunch of diesel will be a budget buster. Would love to hear from you or others on juggling this or your experiences. Safe travels, love the vids.

And NEVER use the Indian River inlet in Delaware. It has exceptionally strong currents in calm weather. Just a FYI.

In Great Bridge Lock, your lines are looped around bollards, not pilings.

Hi Billy & Sierra! Did you see CV 69 the USS Dwight D Eisenhower? When were you in the Portsmouth/Norfolk area? My son is stationed on that ship as of October 1st and is just getting to know the Portsmouth/Norfolk area. We enjoy all of your videos and we really enjoyed the video shots of the Navy ships and submarine as you toodled through this area! Keep up the good work and thank you!

Not sure how much you guys checked out Portsmouth but on the way back down, Bier Garden, Baron's ,and Gosport Tavern are probably the best restaurants in Old Town. Also close to the docks, Humboldt Steel Co is a pizza place with a pretty good weekday lunch time special of 2 pizza slices and a beer for ~$5. Across the street Longboards also has a variety of specials like taco Tuesdays and burger Wednesday. As a general word of caution, stay in the Old Town bit of Portsmouth. It can get sketchy fast if you travel too far away from there. For places to stop further along, on the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel there is a place called Lynnhaven Inlet on the Virginia Beach side. There a few decent waterside restaurants like Dockside and Chicks Oyster Bar that you can pull a boat up to.
