LIVEABOARD: Installing A Rainman Watermaker On Our Sailing Catamaran (game changer)

Water water everywhere and it is all salt water which does not do us any good (except to float on) UNTIL NOW! We recently installed a Rainman Watermaker (aka desalination unit) aboard our boat and can now desalinate salt water!!! *According to Rainman the output of this unit is 26-37gph depending on water temperature. We have been seeing the high side of this output scale in the warm Caribbean water.
*Everything that we needed for install came with our rainman unit including valves, fittings, filters, filter housings and mounts, pex tubing, even hose clamps. The only thing that I had to get additionally was a sea water strainer and a short length of pvc hose.

I sided with Sierra about the generator when that question came up. Glad that you now have a reason to use it and such a useful one too. Every convenience that makes it easier for you guys to do what you love is a good one. I enjoy your videos and want to encourage you to keep up the great work. Glad to see you have a water maker, it's a game/life changer. Three things, set up as much automation in the care and maintenance of your watermaker you can asap. Second, get your self a water tester. I know water can taste good but you would be surprised to find out how dirty good tasting water can be. Third, look into getting something to add minerals back into the water you drink. Your bones will thank you. I know I said three things but one more. Enjoy it.

Hope you bought a test kit to make certain water is ok to drink. In close proximity to some countries, they recommend you don’t make water. Wait till you are further offshore. Look into it Billy & Sierra. Congrats on the Rainman!!! You needed it.

A coupe of points about water makers you will want to pay attention to: 1) Adjust the pressure based on what output the membranes are rated for, not just pressure. In brackish or fresh water the pressure will be much lower. If you use 850 PSI in brackish water you will damage the membranes. 2) Never back flush the membranes with chlorinated water. It will distroy them. This can happen if you fill your tanks at the dock and then back flush from the tanks. It's a good idea to install a carbon charcoal filter in the flush line in case you forget. Enjoy the water maker. We used our water to trade for fish and other thinks in remote areas.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, Rainman recommends a different psi for brackish water and I believe the offer a flow gauge that helps when desalination gets brackish water too. An activated carbon filter did come with our autoflush to put in line from the water tanks.

Good points. All Rainman systems now come with flow meter to ensure you don't go above the specs of the system while in brackish water.

I am so glad Sierra won the generator battle. Now that you have Freshwater you can really wash your hair.🤗🤗🤗🤗 Also you can get a mini washing machine for about $150. Thats a game changer. Another benefit of having your own water maker is that you could actually help fellow boaters in need. You may also be able to help a family / business or two when you go back to the Bahamas. Sierra you might be able to work something out with Rainman to help you if you decide to do that.

I've seen people run some pvc pipe along their rails with holes spaced however far apart, and they grew different types of greens. They did have a tomato plant but it was potted in soil.

Great video! I hope to be cruising someday. I see you are adjusting pressure to get your product water. if you ever find yourself in lower salinity water, you may want to add a flow gauge to the product water output. If you run 850 PSI in low salinity water you will likely damage the membranes. You want to adjust the pressure to give the desired flow, without exceeding the maximum pressure. In fresh water you need very little pressure.
