So glad you made it through. I was a commercial fisherman in my younger days and know all too well what you went through. Being from B.C. Canada we didn't get actual hurricanes with tornado like patterns but 70 to 80 knot winds gusting to 100 are almost as bad and we usually had no place to hide. I remember one storm we rode out on the north end of the Queen Charlotte islands. We anchored off of Tow Hill with tow anchors. That storm was so bad we literally dragged both hooks a whole mile from the west to the east. The Capt. said he'd never dragged that much in his thirty years fishing. It was very scary. Being a dog person I really felt your pain Sierra. Ruby was so lucky you seen her in the water and rescued her or she likely would not have made it. I so wish I could help the cause but being on disability I can't spare even 5 bucks. But what you've done for her buys you a special place in heaven. God bless you both.

Great episode showing us all the details, I really enjoyed it. One suggestion I would make if you don’t mind is don’t seek shelter next to a hard structure such as that bridge next time. That’s usually what breaks your boat, instead surround yourself of as much mangroves as you can, they are really good at cushioning and usually with the storm surge you end up slightly over them.

I absolutely love watching your videos every week! Thank you so much. I really wish you guys would have on safety gear especially when you’re all by your lonesome on watch. I would hate to read that one of you disappeared. Many years ago, I did a circumnavigation 2 1/2 times on a 25 m motor sailor. Back then we didn’t have all of the incredibly wonderful electronics like you have today. We were lucky thave a weather fax machine that came through on the single side band radio. It certainly didn’t have The wind like you have on your computer screen and if you were lucky, the whole forecast came through. Most of the time he managed to get blasted by weather all the time. Anyway, thank you once again I’m glad you guys are all safe. As always, looking forward to the next one.

@Cajundaddydave6 ай бұрын
Wow, that was a very rare and fierce storm right at the beginning of hurricane season. I am so glad you were able to tuck back into a mangrove channel out of the major wind and heavy seas. Of all the sailing channels I watch, you give me the most confidence in your seamanship and experience to protect your boat and your family from the worst mother nature can dish out. Even Ruby dog stayed safe. Well done! As I am sure you figured out, mangroves make excellent anchor points in a storm and are a lot more secure than a hastily deployed anchor into an unknown, possibly muddy, grassy, fouled bottom. Five to six lines deployed on all points to very solid mangrove trees have been the best protection for Caribbean sailors for centuries. By staying onboard you were able to adapt and adjust as conditions changed, and were prepared if needed to fend off a loose boat adrift in the anchorage. Looking forward to your debrief vid. Cheers all around!

Firstly I love your videos. Great job. Secondly, it is so difficult to make those decisions but making them with the best info you can get helps. Getting to the south of the Hurricane was the right decision in my mind. Unfortunately, we were back home in Canada with our Catamaran on the hard in Tyrell Bay Marina on Carriacou Island. She was a heavy boat (Lagoon 421) tied down to concrete blocks and yet she was picked up and thrown 30 feet into the haulout slipway and destroyed. We have had messages from local friends who have also lost everything and they really need help but amazingly are still so positive. Thank you for your support of the local community.

Wow! You all had me sitting here on pins and needles! Sheesh! I knew you were fine at the end because I was watching this video. Also, I think you did an update too. My God, that little pup Beryl/Ruby was really smart to swim to your boat. She had the safest place she could have been in that situation. Honestly, there was no way to know if Beryl would turn North towards where you were. There really was no safe place to run too. Trinidad and Tobago islands would have been a great place to run to had you already been in Grenada and could have left before the last minute, but you didn't have time to run by the time you got all the way down there with the hurricane barreling down on you all. When you said you were looking for lodging on the island I was thinking if you can get into the mangroves and tie off like you did, then the boat would be as safe as Island buildings. You two made all the right decisions, and I am so happy that little Beryl got a new family to take her on. How was her leg after she had some time to rest and stuff? How did she even end up in the ocean swimming just before a hurricane? Did someone throw her in there to get rid of her? I have too many questions, and none of them really have an answer, but at least she was safe during the storm and she has a new family.
