In this short video we unbox, test, and review the CrewWatcher MOB device by Weems and Plath amzn.to/2StJ1W7. We bought this product for full price on Amazon and this is in no way a paid advertisement or sponsorship. CrewWatcher is a bluetooth/app based MOB device and intrigued us with the affordable price and potential for variety of uses. We do NOT necessarily think this should be a boats primary MOB warning system and this video only portrays our initial experience with the units. CrewWatcher is for sale on amazon amzn.to/2StJ1W7

So you're saying that MOBs really do happen? Absolutely and usually when other crew members aren't around or doing something that requires full attention on thier part. Pay attention and always use Jack lines Harnesses and and PFDs. Get hooked on hooking up to jack lines when you untie from the dock. Good habits should be used at all times. Not just when we're drilling or on camera for the viewers

I think i would prefer something that has gps and AIS as well as a flasher. CrewWatcher has to be setup/turned on and the tablet connected in order for it to work at all. It might work for occasional use so you could sleep while one of your crew is at the helm by themselves such as at night. For the AIS type MOB device you would need an AIS receiver onboard too. So you did go with an affordable solution that was easier to get now instead of waiting to get the more robust type devices at a much larger initial investment. I can see why you wanted to try it out. Thanks for posting this for all of us!

I really like the idea of this, only concern I have is that it’ll only track one MOB at a time since I have 2 dogs and would buy these mostly for them. Now clearly I’m way behind since I started binge watching from the beginning so hopefully some improvements have been made and I’ll stumble across an update video, but this is still something worth having I think. You can never be too safe.

Cool. You definitely hit more angles than I thought were probable with the detector.. Obviously you will need to tweak the distance sensor if you carry them ashore with you or Jetty. A second I Pad is looking like a safe acquisition. One portable and one on Adrenaline. The ocean is not to be taken for granted. Even as alert and aware of the challenges she has presented and you have dealt with intelligently, nobody can account for Mr. Murphy. Assumption is the mother of all mess ups. You and Billy don't fall into that category thankfully. We all know Jetty is a wild card but she is smart and picks up on her body guards perceptions and emotions. Top notch crew and your testing efforts have many criteria to build upon for others to learn from. Short version. You done good. Stay happy.

You are always straight up about who has provided what. It is a very honest way to make an unsolicited recommendation for a cool product. Hi Billy, Thanks for the review. You and Sierra did a great job. It's nice to see the product in actual use. I've looked at them before and think they are ok for close to shore use. As you saw there are problems with bluetooth range and only tracking one person at a time. Also if you are not near the device you may not hear the alarm right away. The location accuracy is limited especially in stronger currents. Have you ever looked into the AIS/DSC Personal Locator Devices? They are definitely more expensive, ($250-300.00) but can be tracked by AIS, have GPS location and put the MOB's position right on your chart plotter. The are attached to your PFD and activate automatically when in the water. Also any boat in a 4 mile radius with AIS can also be notified and help search. There are several types, but for serious cruising or offshore use a definite lifesaver. Love your videos. I think you guys are awesome. Happy New Year!!

Hi Peter, Sea Angel is definitely one, but there are several others too such as: Ocean Signal Rescue ME MOB1, ACR Aislink MOB, McMurdo Smartfind S10, Kanned Marine Safelink R10 and several others. All do similar things, but have slightly different features and price points. There should be one that is right for each person's own specific needs. All are more expensive than the Crew Watcher, but definitely provide better protection.

The "water sensors" to which you refer are more accurately electrical contacts. When submerged in water, the electrical circuit is completed thereby setting off the alarm. It will work better in salt water due to the higher conductivity characteristics. Think about your zinc anodes: they corrode more quickly in salt water than in fresh water (to give a simple example). When you were doing the rain test, both contacts were getting wet, but since water doesn't have enough surface tension, the "circuit" was not completed and didn't trigger the alarm. Neat product. I like your "in depth testing". Keep up the nice work.

Well that was fun! You defiantly showed the problem with self inflating type life jackets. They are not really good for situations where you might fall in regularly , like capsizing in a sailing dinghy, paddle boarding etc BECAUSE once inflated you cannot swim or self rescue as Serria demonstrated by having to remove the jacket to climb back in the boat! Just when you might need floating the most if you can't get on board. Just a cautionary tale. It could make an interesting test video! Cheers Warren

I would imagine that you could pair the system up to send the alarm through some onboard sound system that has speakers. Furthermore, the unit itself could use a caribeener clipped on a belt loop, etc., which might initially be awkward, but eventually would become second nature. As with any safety equipment, I wouldn't rely solely on this, given that you're alone out on the ocean for vast stretches.

Thank you for the review. I have thought about this type of device for well over a year since someone mentioned they were available. As good as this one is, I feel it has some shortcomings. What good is a 200 foot search range if your first mate is in 3 to 5 meter seas? basically its worthless and offers false hope. I realize your personal decision is to not cross an ocean so this may work for you up and down the East Coast. But if you were crossing an ocean, I'd surly want something with a GPS signal that I could monitor that was more than the loss of signal point. I also think a pulsating light would be good in case the MOB is as night. I think this company is more concerned about battery life than accuracy. Make the device so you can both charge and monitor the battery with the app. And also allow the user to replace the battery. It should also be as accurate as possible with either a constant signal or pulse modulation. Think about if you didn't get notified for 15 minutes or more from some reason such as temporary failure of the device. That MOB could quickly be well over 200 feet from that loss of signal point. They're are just to many variables for me to be comfortable to trust my life to this device. I realize nothing is perfect in any situation but this one is far off the mark IMHO!!! Bottom line is...you need to be able to look at your viewing device (i.e. Ipad) and drive toward the person with the beacon and not just the breakoff point where you lost the signal. I don't know how much this one costs, but I wouldn't spare any expense on one that has been better thought out and is super accurate. I rest my case! PEACE OUT!

I have 4 of them for my wife, kid, dog and myself and have had a mixed bag. I initially bought 2 to test and both worked great for about a month and then one stopped being seen at all by the phone. I took both back and exchanged for new set of two and bought two more. All was ok for a couple of 4 hr cruises. The trouble started on a six day trip to the keys we just got back from and one of the four new ones did the same dissapearing act and woud not be recognized no matter what I tried, including a full reset after 13hrs idle and a re-wet to pair. Ironically, as I was cruising back on the last day through Biscayne Bay I was on the fone with Mark in Crew Watcher tech support when my kid’s beacon kept triggering on three different ocasions even though it was bone dry and three feet appart. They are having me ship them back to them to resolve. This will be my last attempt at making this system work. I love the code and UI but cant count on such an important safety gear piece when it is so flaky. I will return them if so and go with a cool AIS based system I saw at the lauderdale boat show.

Looks like a vert useful tool when playing near the water. My only concern is that is looks like it only shows one alarm at a time on the screen and you need to silence that alarm first before you can see what is going on with the other device. I would have thought that you would get a double alarm on the screen for when both devices where activated. Maybe there is something in the settings that may allow for multiple alarms at once. Well at least we know that the life jacket works and inflates when it hits the water. Almost as good as these alarms. Take care out there and stay Safe and Warm. Tom.

I suggest you contact the company to request an upgrade to the app to be able to see multiple alarm activation's. Another suggestion; can you have the app on two or more pads? If one of you is on watch with the navigation iPad at the helm, you should have another pad with whomever is sleeping. They may not be able to hear the alarm with only one pad. Great idea though. I like using one on the dingy.

If you’re using a particular app say Google maps or looking at some social media and someone falls overboard will that alarm still go off if someone goes overboard? Because it looks like you’re only doing tests while having that app open. Simple.. instead of existing the app just minimize the app(Will run on background) and you can use other app's simultaneously

We are thinking about going to the Outer Islands. This will be our 1st trip there planning late June. For 2 weeks. We like secluded on the beach, great fishing and snorkeling. What island do you recommend? We want to stay in a house, beachfront.

Ok first of all the exploding floatation device was funny. But those things are design for small boats which usually won't have but one person steering at night or on Deck. Or doing watch and the other person down below sleeping but I think that you can download another app were you can have multiple devices at the same time and monitor them but the ones we had on our boat was that way you had one captain at a time they work pretty good but still not as good as being tied on with a lanyard. Yes use it as a redundant system to your lanyard. Redundancy is very good on a boat.

That was a great video I would try to fully submerge the thing not just let it float.

That was pretty cool. Would like to know how it works on the dinghy underway. Lots of water spray and what have you in there. Please keep it up. Peace from Allegro.

yes, seems like a good product and a good review, but would also like to know if it activates while the device ( phone , i pad etc ) is being used for something else . eg. like navionics or txting or music or calls etc,, also what is the operating signal range , what is the position location max distance .

Took one for the team Sierra! Ha ha! So just to be clear, the water activated the pfd? Or did you pull the cord while in the water? I thought it went off by itself based on your reaction, but wasn't sure. Loved that you did a review on this! Super fun to watch and learn from. Thanks guys! 😊 Happy New Year!

Sun Soul: Greetings - many, but certainly not all inflatable PFDs auto-inflate. Along with the CO2 cartridge, the water soluble component that triggers the inflation sequence requires periodic replacement.

Hello both, I wonder if the device is still working, when you are far from the coast at sea, so outside the mobile phone network. Greetings Lucas and the best wishes for 2019

I think that it is reasonable to only have one activated at a time. It is reasonable to assume that only one person would be overboard at a time - unless a major emergency and in that event it is only possible to rescue one at a time.

How does it react if you are moving and someone falls overboard. Does it just take you back to last known signal location? Will it tell you when you are close? Try tying it to a cheap life jacket or something that floats and see the device’s reaction.

Make sure nobody falls overboard! It is a serious problem and in rough seas you can loose somebody very quickly. Messing with all the technology might distract you from keeping your eye on the victim. Again, make sure nobody falls overboard. Take every precaution. They can be lost in no time and they are gone forever.

Best Man Over Board device is not falling over board, but if it happens, seem's to be a pretty good solution. But what happens, if you use another bluetoth device on your I-Pad. Will it never the less start the Alarm? Fair winds and following seas

Here is the fact: You see there is two hole ? one hole will act as transmitter to transmit electromagnetic signal.. and other hole is receiver. When there is water level fills up both hole receiver detects the signal and set the alarm off, because water is good conductor of electric... now you know why its not going off when its raining (no constant water flow)

This would be good for when you're under way and one of you is sleeping. The ipad would have to be heard by the one who is sleeping, of course. Jetty should wear hers all the time.

Do you have to use a separate app device, can you run a navigation app along with there app

I'm still a little confused? Does the App have a direct signal with the device or the Lat & Long of activation? It does mention to activate your MOB on you navigation so I assume it has a direct signal? If so, how far away can it read that signal? I would definitely attach a whistle to it.
