agree! we have a huge problem on the west coast of Canada with Derelict and Abandoned boats. Leaking toxins into the ocean and causing eco harm to marine life. So repurposing a used boat wins the day in our Green Boater community. kudos.

I'm with everybody else here. I dont care how much you made. Hopefully you made a fortune, but as an older person money comes and goes. Money in its own right doesn't make you happy, it just gives you freedom and choices (not always a guarantee to happiness). You're health is the most valuable thing.

As a life long boater, you guys are absolutely spot on with your assessment. In my opinion, only two kinds of people should own a boat, someone with an open checkbook, or someone who isn't afraid to get to work, and push beyond your comfort zone when necessary. I'm the latter and find it much more rewarding and fulfilling. Great work and a great experience. The knowledge gained in every project is impossible to put a dollar figure on, because it might be 30 years before you lean on that skill again.

Very true! I had a boat because I love to fish. The first two years were great. Few problems and lots of fish. Slowly though it turned into working on the boat more than fishing. Finally it was seemed I was a having to spend a grand everytime i wanted to use it to catch a few fish. It had to go.

I’ve had a 1980 Marine Trader 41 for 15 years. I’ve done upgrades and maintenance. Nothing is harder then boat work. The physical nature of it, the crazy cost for materials and the basic fixed costs of moorage. Also, boats deteriorate. The sun and rain do incredible damage overtime. Underneath things grow and eat your boat. And don’t forget the animals, seagulls shit on your boat, otters have meals and shit on your boats and low life’s and crooks break into your boat and expensive tradesman make mistakes. I’ve seen it all. So congratulations, keep living the dream while your young and have your health.

Amazing restoration! I am impressed by your amazing work ethic. This was a colossal project, not many could take on something this massive so I give you lots of credit. Over the years I've done several boat resto's myself but nothing of the scale of Mountain Myst. I know what it's like to grind through the heat, dust, and itch until the job is done. My last one was a 1960's Whaler which made me about the same per hour rate of $10/hr that you both made. It was a labor of love, and that I believe has to be the real motivation. There's so much satisfaction from bringing back a boat from the dead so someone can enjoy it for many more years. Congrats!

Figuring the hours the way you do is spot on. Not all professional techs do good work….and if you want it done right you gotta do it yourself sometimes. Frankly, youre gonna spend more than your hours snd money combined on the same boat if it was brand new….so you still made out in my opinion. I really like that you considered your time. It’s valuable. I would note that the yard is getting the $100 an hour for the marine tech, not the tech. Around here, the yard takes the lion share and the tech is lucky to get $20 an hour. Having said that, your labor is easily worth what you value it at. Something that also isn’t a monetary pay-off but is valuable is the enjoyment you brought to so many of us by showing us your project and journey. Thanks!

Rent. Electric. Garbage. Water. lawn care. Parking. All cost to add into consideration as well. Even a low rent house or apartment, is 20-30k a year or more, depending on where you are at. It's good that you are both young, strong, and eager to have awesome experiences. I agree that the actual cost is well payed for by the experiences. I've had the good fortune to visit and live in 49 states, and 3 countries. I was never 'wealthy' in money, in fact, dirt poor. But the experiences I got to see and enjoy... I'm a multi-billionaire from them. Keep it up and enjoy life. Ya'll rock.
