@Muffinator Yeah, Ulfric was as much an asset to the Thalmor as Bin Laden was an asset to the CIA. Do you see where I am going with this? Ulfric was considered an asset when he did on his own what the Thalmor wanted to happen. Drive the Foresworn out of Markarth. Though it is true that the war draging on only benefits the Thalmor the conclusion that you have to join the Empire is wrong. You just have to end the war one way or another, doesn't really matter who wins.

@Muffinator I think the main reason people hate the Imperial Legion is because at the last second Bethesda changed the game around, cut a bunch of content and made it look like they were more of the bad guys. If you download a mod that restores and changes the opening a bit, I can't remember exactly which mod but I'll find the link if I can. If you do, you'll see that Tulius was as uninterested in helping the thalmor as everyone else. No one likes the Thalmor but the Stormcloaks want everyone to act like the Imperials are a bunch of Elven asswipes. Really, all they have to do is get Ulfric's head out of his ass and turn him on the Thalmor themselves in secret. Of course you can't just wage war, the Empire knows that. I know both sides are bad in their own way. I hate it whenever I have to hear an Imperial troup go on and on about wanting to kill another one of "Ulfric's boys" and I think about the Stormcloaks that are just trying to save their families and go home. But I can't in good faith sit idly with the Stormcloaks while they slaughter the Imperials while they suffer the same fate and what tips me in the Imperials favor is that the Imperials seem to be going in the right direction, slowly let the Thalmor get lazy and then when they think they've got the upper hand, rip their fucking throats out.

Feels a bit too much like the Wild Card ending in New Vegas, but at the same time the Civil War isn't integral to the main plot of Skyrim, it's more like a backdrop setting. I assume the biggest issue with making the Dragonborn the ruler of Skyrim being that if you can do that before you face Auldin there really wouldn't be much of a reason why you don't lead an entire army to face him by the end of the game. No way in hell could Bethesda's game engine handle that. That also kind of goes against the way the main characters are handled in the Elder Scrolls, they're always these larger than life big damn Heroes that become legendary figures who slip into history. I'm not gonna try to convince you the stormcloaks are the better side or that you should like Ulfric or any of that, you can decide all that on your own, but lets clear up this huge myth that has literally nothing that its even based on. Ulfric does not now nor has he ever worked for or aided the Thalmor in any way. He was imprisoned and tortured by them for years, and when he finally returned home it was to find his father dead and his people under the rule of an empire that was selling out to those same thalmor. He took charge of Windhelm as the rightful Jarl, appealed to Torygg to take a stand against the Thalmor and the empire. Torygg didn't respond for 5 years. Ulfric called for a moot. Nobody wanted to do that either, so he challenged Torygg to a duel and the rest is history. Literally the only thing that leads people to believe that Ulfric is working for the thalmor is their inability to read the dossier the Thalmor keep on him. They list him as an asset - at which point all imperial supporting players go blind and proclaim him a thalmor puppet - but this only means they think they can benefit from him and his actions - aka the civil war he is fighting - but they also say that they are not in contact with him (meaning he's not working for them) and that a Stormcloak victory to the war is worst case scenario for them. If the stormcloaks win the war, the thalmor lose their foothold in skyrim and if they attempt to invade (which is their endgame - they want to rule all of Tamriel) they have to cross Cyrodiil, then face an entire nation of famously relentless mountain men on their home turf. All of which is to say, they want the civil war to go as long as possible, weakening the entirety of Skyrim, but for the Empire (who is already caving to their demands and advances) to ultimately "win" so they can then swoop in and take charge. If you want a much more in-depth analysis of all this shit, look up ThatSwordGuy. @@135Fenrir Unfortunately, you are trying to associate fantasy with reality. Which rarely works. From the dialogue it seems the only reason why the Dragonborn was captured was wrong place and wrong time. Not to mention there is nothing in lore to support a law against crossing province borders. The wrong place, wrong time, and suspicion was the only reasons why the Dragonborn almost got beheaded in the beginning.

All the Jarls do that. Literally all of them. They speak to you from a Throne, whereas Tulius doesn't have one because he's merely a military officer. He's trained to be humble and obey a sovereign. Skyrim is the Nord homeland and the Stormcloaks are trying to throw off the rule of a foreign power. They are faced with an Emperor who rules them from another country, and other races taking advantage of their compassion for resources. All of this to Skyrim’s detriment. The Stormcloaks’ sentiment is simply that foreigners have done nothing but persecute the Nords just for being Nords, the most glaring example being what the Thalmor does to Talos worshippers. It’s a testament to the Nords’ tender nature that they even ALLOW elf refugees to take shelter in their capital. In my opinion they are totally justified in their lack of trust for different races. There is literally a book in ES:V written by a Dunmer refugee about how they plan to take over Skyrim by settling it. Other races simply don’t have Skyrim’s best interest in mind
