instead of using the knife, screw the black cap back on and it's like a little handle! love your enthusiasm for this, keep it up!

Great experiment. Not to be that guy... but I'm going to be that guy. The No. 1 grit and the dollar store sand did the bulk of the work. The No. 3 grit is the next to last step to make everything polished. The aquarium gravel was a good idea but it might be what caused pieces to break. I've had best success using sand from the side of the road, the junk that is in the gutter from the concrete curb breaking down. Great video. Just hope my input can help a fellow crafter

Matt, if you're open to suggestions, when you take the outer cap off, screw the knob back on the threaded stem on the inner cap and lift it right out. This will save your rubber seal. Hope this helps.

Oops, forgot f to add, use ceramic pellets to cut down on breakage. I only use grit no 1 for 5 days and it comes out beautiful.

I motion that since these are not actually conditioned by the ocean, we call it "See Glass."

I have never done this before but dumping it into a strainer of some type then rinsing it off seems the way to go.

what would the difference be if you only used the grit and not the sand, pebbles and seashells? And I think some will break anyway due to it getting thinner.

Cool! You could do this on a large scale with a cement mixer. :D

I made earrings for many years with beach glass and natural stones in the 80s. I had someone drill holes at the tops. Everyone loves beach glass. And so do I. Funny thing....rarely are big pieces found on an ocean beach. But a beach inside a bay is the best spot.

Matt that was so cool to watch the reveal. Maybe next time make sure you wait until their bottles are empty before grabbing them. LOL. Thanks for sharing. First time 7 days took forever. Guess I am impatient.

So you definitely need grit? Not just sand n lil pebbles? If I have to buy one would you say #1?

You need to redo this video. You use the twist cap and put it back on the screw and pull the second top off.

Hmmmmm, next time try plastic pellets, use about 1/4 of the barrel filled with plastic pellets and just use one grit. Run full 7 days and your results should be better with fewer broken bits.

Is it the filling the barrel more that creates more weight that can break the glass?
@jameshurley224
@jameshurley224 4 жыл бұрын
If you overfill the barrel it strains the motor of the tumbler causing it to overheat. Not a good thing. Lol. The plastic will cushion the plastic and the movement of the water and the grit will do the work, not the glass. Never fill above 3/4 of the barrel and you will be fine. I do about 2/3rds myself to get a good slurry like foam like yours as thats how you get the best results.

I wonder if anyone has done this by adding salt since sea water is salty.

I've found washed glass on beaches of Lake Ontario & found no differences between that (fresh water) & at the ocean. Salt apparently makes no difference

This seems like a lot of time invested for such a little reward . Do they make a tumbler on a larger scale ??? Seems like a bigger size tumbler would equal a larger reward .... or would that just break everything to pieces ??

Where are people finding true colored glass, not coated glass? Also, thought one needed to tumble for weeks, not days.
@christopherthurman5424
@christopherthurman5424 3 жыл бұрын
Beverage bottles are colored glass. Beer, wine, coca cola (a nice sky blue that you don't notice until you look again) the decorative bottle from the dollar store are usually coated glass and not food safe. Tumbling rocks to get a polished gloss look does take weeks. But frosting glass is just using 1 step to remove that gloss look
