I hate that the site now needs you to log in to scroll. I used to lurk very often, sticking with no account to avoid drama, and it made me stop visiting the site entirely. It’s also just going to make people who find the site for the first time feel tumblr is tiny and not worth scrolling I imagine. I even considered finally making an account to post my art but THEN that happened and that felt like a bad omen and turned me away out of spite. Can we stop with websites gatekeeping even viewing content with having an account already. I miss when the Internet was a jenga tower of forums filled with great info and discussion you could just freely access through search engines without needing networking to get links to servers and crap like that. At least I’ll always have the memories of how much I learned and saw on the site, it was a good decade. 💔 The thing I’m hung up on is just petty but I’m suspicious of its current direction.

It's frustrating for me because I'm literally their professed target audience and these changes push away people like me too.I signed up only a couple of months ago, not as part of any big exodus from a site, more a sum of various fizzling out. I had never used Tumblr before, but I have a lot of tumblr-y friends, and I've always enjoyed the little weird bits of tumblr that get reposted elsewhere on the web. It's like you say, people who come to Tumblr do so for Tumblr vibes. If you haven't read it already, I would recommend Cory Doctorow's article on "Enshittification" - it pretty effectively sums up what is plaguing the web right now

See the worst thing of it is that I was * excited * for the new dashboard layout lol. Because I use the mobile website instead of the app (and like sure mobile websites are almost always worse but), and one of my biggest complaints was that there are just GIANT ads on the dashboard. Like they will break the way that you can scroll type of giant. So when the new dashboard rolled around I was actually optimistic for around 30 seconds before discovering that they did not, in fact fix it lol But yeahhh, I really hope that this doesn’t continue because Tumblr is just genuinely the easiest place to make friends online imo, and I’d hate to see people getting driven away from it like how they have with (checks notes) every other social media site? I mean I do love and use Dreamwidth a lot but it’s just. a VERY different place. Anyhow thanks for making the video, I thought it covered all of the everything very well!

"You get out what you put in" is my favourite thing about Tumblr, an algorithm doesn't curate your experience - YOU curate it, and it really makes you feel like part of a community because that's HOW the content gets around, everybody does it together and it's beautiful. okay this is gonna sound insane but i actually had to pause this video around 21: 58 beacue i can feel the start of tears welling up in my eyes. i think this is the second complation in this video of users begging tumblr to just listen to them and like, if i've learnt ANYTHING in my time using social media it's that websites Do Not Listen to their userbase on these issues, because - despite what they're saying - they're not doing it for us. their doing it to make the site more palletable to new users who are used to twitter/instagram/tiktok/etc. sites that do the work for them, sites where they don't have to try to find things they enjoy and sites that make the experience more focused on consuption that interaction. that's the formula that makes money and if your userbase can't give you money, you look for a new userbase. it all just feels so hopeless. tumblr isn't gonna listen to us, they don't give two shits about us unless we're constantly increasing profit, so this assimilation from uniqe social media into the homogenity of internet sites today is not going to stop. idk how to explain it but it just leaves me feeling empty. like where the hell am i suppoused to go when tumblr stops being enjoyable?

I'm living for it. ......hearing a corporation say things that align with pro censorship/antishipper stances will always scare me and never surprise me. Curating your own experience is a vital part of not just tumblr but most spaces in life. Nothing is 100%, you will always miss things you would have liked and see things you don't want to, but self curating always has better results than algorithmic ways, in my experience. And it doesn't NOT have to do with algorithms encouraging censorship practices "to protect people". Dare I say that tumblr is one of the last few SOCIAL social media, what with actually needing to engage with communities to use the site? "The fault always lies with the product if the user has a bad experience w content" "the default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application" these are. Bad the first makes me worry even more about their already horrific moderation ideas, as well as know for sure that they don't understand the social workings of their own site, and the second is just. Assuming stupidity in this context is just out of touch with the reality of who's using social media of this kind. Yeah.....I won't be remaking mine even after I figure out this medical issue I'm having. Got banned twice for being the wrong kind of fandom shipping weirdo and now the site is going unusable so its not just hostile to me the way I enjoy media, it's just hostile. But this is what they want right? They don't want people who go too far out on the fringes there even though people like me started that place. I miss when tumblr was MY safe place. I was so excited to get a tablet someday and post all the weird porn ideas I had, but before I could they banned nsfw and that was the beginning of the end. So when all us anticensorship folks kept saying "it will not stop at censoring fiction", we were right? Shocking. /s All in all it's been a disappointing journey. The porn ban seems like a small thing but that IS where is started and that should be remembered. They started by driving out the people who post horny shit, in fandom that's NOT a small part, and it didn't ring enough alarm bells. They cut their base down to the people who were willing to accept the initial concessions. You said earlier that the people who stuck around after the nsfw ban stayed bc the rest of the internet wasn't worth it(don't remember exact words); in my experience, those of us who left didn't find anywhere else super welcoming either, we wanted to go back to tumblr, but they took away a core aspect of how we express ourselves and that wasn't okay with us. In my case, even being aspec, my sexuality is a way that I express myself both for fun and as a way to vent trauma, and it was just. Snatched away. I still haven't found anywhere I would feel comfortable posting drawings like I would have on pre nsfw ban tumblr; AO3 is great for writing at least. It hurts to be essentially locked out of full fandom participation because a corporation decides you aren't societally acceptable, and then a large portion of fandom seems to agree because the thing that's hurt you deeply hasn't affected them nearly as bad, if at all. /npa I tried to come back to tumblr and censor myself to be able to participate in fandom again, but now a weirdly loud amount of fandom itself AGREES WITH TUMBLR that my enjoyment of sexual content is unacceptable. That I need to sterilize how I enjoy media or die. Which I have been told to do and threatened with! In more visceral detail than that. Over fake things that, while they might happen in real life, are not really happening on the page and cannot hurt anybody(without the influence of another real person). I don't remember that happening to me on tumblr before the porn ban? I really wonder all over again how the ban affected how people perceive and interact with media and fandom. It was never an issue when I was younger, fandom understood that fiction was fake and not to be taken seriously in the sense of it is not literally hurting anybody. I wish I had the resources to properly research what changed and when. Got disorganized at the end. In a lot of pain, brain fogged as fuck. Hope I was semicoherent. Have a lovely day~

4:59 this is a really interesting comparison, cos libraries are a publically funded public good. Even with the best intentions, at some point, the owners of tumblr will pressure the team into at least making it profitable. ao3 is a solid model; donation based like wikipedia. But tumblr would be way more intensive to run, so idk if that would work.

I agree with everything you're saying, but you fall into the same pit that everyone else who hates these changes is falling into: the complete lack of any awareness that tumblr is a BUSINESS. I hate late-stage capitalism as much as the next socialist comrade and I have loved and been on tumblr since 2010, but the fact of the matter is that without offering up a way to allow the owners to PROFIT off of tumblr, we're just spinning wheels. They are making these changes in order to attract more (different) users because we, collectively the current users, are not making them money. A very long screed begging them not to change is not making them money. The product is not making them money, the end. So my challenge to you is: post a 28:47 long video explaining to them and your followers how WE can make THEM money and therefore give them a damn reason to listen to us. 💁‍♀

This is a genuine question because I don't know how it works for Tumblr, but given that they've existed for a number of years and continue to do so, surely they *are* currently making money? Enough to sustain what they're currently doing? Isn't the point here that they've decided they now want to increase the profits rather than support their existing community, which they've been comfortably doing for some time? I don't think it's about lack of awareness that Tumblr is a BUSINESS, I think most users are savvy enough to get that. We all understand that there are people running the site and they need to get paid, etc. The point is that Tumblr was the last platform that didn't seem to be solely profit-driven and actually wanted to support its users in their creativity. And now they're just following the $$$ like all the others. Yes they need to make money, which they've been doing, clearly. They *don't* need to keep increasing profits just because capitalism says that's what they should do.

it is not my job to explain to a company how I can make them money. late-stage capitalism is a scourge on the earth and as I pointed out in my video, the idea that LINE MUST GO UP is the main problem here. I get that they need to make money, but they don't need to make constantly compounding money forever, they just need to make enough money to keep the site running and pay the staff. I pay for ad-free browsing, and my in previous video about the site I listed off all of the good things staff has done that made the site more profitable (ad-free, blazing, crabs etc.). I didn't bring them up in this video because that wasn't the point. I am entirely aware that tumblr is a business, which is exactly why I made this video.

the tumblr updates sucks (desktop fun thing I've noticed try to click on notes in your own blog the page looks like it has an earthquake), instagram is horrible on desktop (i know and its been great for years until recentlty they did something were it keeps jumping around and just logs me out) pinterest has a commenting bug (it doesn't work) and bug where you can't close out of a picture twitter is twitter
