as a former Undertale fan, i would definitely say that Sans reached the same level as the Onceler. There were soo many AUs made where Sans was one of, if not the main character and there were even AUs made where Sans was the only character (Think Ink Sans or something). People shipped the Sanses with each other and made entire series that were pretty much only occupied by Sans.

Yeah the only character that got even close to the Onceler Phenomenon was Sans. He also got tons of AU versions of himself (Error!Sans, Blueberry, Underfell Sans, and Fresh to name a few), but the difference was that Sans came from a piece of media where /every/ character was unique and likable. So these AU Sans characters were accompanied by just about every other Undertale character with the same aesthetic. But that still didn't stop people from shipping their different Sanses together.

All the characters in Undertale are great, but since sans fit the tumblr sexyman archetype so well, pretty much all of the attention the AUs got was directed towards sans (and I guess Papyrus too, by association). Other great characters like Undyne or Asgore usually got a new design or something but ultimately missed out on most of the attention. I’ll never regret being super into Undertale around it’s popularity peak, but man, do I ever know some stuff that I don’t need to.

as someone who was on tumblr just after the onceler hype and during the sans hype, and most hypes between, only sans could ever hold a candle to the onceler. what makes one onceleresque is not the popularity or obsession, but the confusing way it unfolds. wanting to pay to see raymond? self insert kylo ren fanfic? all of it, expected and pedestrian. call me when you ship raymond with several versions of himself in varying shades of moral grey, or reinvent kylo ren 10 times over and completely ignore every other interpersonal relationship written in the movies in favour of writing a love triangle between himself 3 times at once. bill cipher is a close contender but dipper was enough to keep him from achieving true oncelitude. edit: i have been made aware of the fact that, as i suspected, sans surpassed his predecessor. update you colloquiallisms accordingly, we are now looking for the new sans undertale.

I think Sans never quite hit the absurdity of Onceler-ism because Undertale was actually good and people liked it for reasons besides him. There were absolutely seas of totally unrecognizable AU and baffling sexualization, but the fandom was big enough to squirrel that stuff to the side and a constant stream of new fans meant that the whole hyper-insular incestuous attitude didn't really form.

I've seen tons of variations of Sans (some of them being completely removed of the character of Sans), all of them either shipped with: a)himself, b)his biological brother c)a small 9 year old child or d) a milf goat. The only character that I would consider more cursed than the onceler or sans would be the purple guy from FNA. He (when he gained popularity) was a "character" that (up to that point) no clear appearance, no dialogue, no personality. Nothing. And people still found him interesting enough to either ship themselves with him, ship an animatronic with him or ship him with himself...

Another worthy example: Bill Cypher, who was literally A TRIANGLE - but because he was a vaguely twinkish villain with a top he fulfilled the Tumblr sexy man archetype to a T, so of course people were turning him into a skinny white boy and lusting after him. Also the only other time I remember a popular AU getting so far removed from its source material, where the creator later just turned the characters into OCs and it became a whole fandom drama, happened with Five Nights at Freddy's and the purple guy.... like does anybody remember that or did i dream that up?? Kind of how I feel about Discord from My Little Pony. He shares a lot of characteristics with Bill Cipher (albeit, more kid-friendly with his reality-bending powers and being redeemable), but he didn’t meet the certain traits that might have made him Onceleresque. I think that had to with the negativity that was brought up in the MLP fandom and being an anthromorphic creature (cause it seems human looking characters were kind of the better attraction fans seem to latch to at the time) which didn’t really expose the character to a wider audience if you weren’t a fan to begin with. Cause with Bill, you did have a human persona of the character, and probably Bipper (which is pretty questionable now that it was a ship) even though he couldn’t be redeemable. Kind of why I see Sans as a nonhuman character that people can approach more comfortably to Oncelerify.

I firmly believe Sans is the closest thing to being "the new Onceler" I used to be DEEP into the Undertale AU fandom and it was 30% dedicated to actually making aus with intricate storylines and comics/fic, and the remaining 70% is just people shipping Sans with himself. The isle of Oncelers concept reminded me of this one Wattpad fic where Toriel made a school for all AU characters and it becomes a drama where the Bad Sanses try to tear everyone down and there're a LOT of questionable story beats and endings. Also let me just mention how it's very, very common to make fankids for Sanscest ships and then make them fall in love with each other like. I was so young I didn't understand what was happening and just took each Sans as being a different person but now that I look back on it I'm filled with both nostalgia and cringe
