I totally agree with you on MS Sec Essentials. That is probably the most lightweight/unbloated anti-virus program ever (Norton, McAfee, Avast, Zone Alarm are just bloated and over thought). A nice deep clean in the registry with Eusing reg cleaner works great in conjunction with CCleaner.

There is a disk defragmenter built into windows. It's accessible though the control panel.

You should have also mentioned msconfig (start > run > msconfig) the startup tab has check boxes that users can turn off what they don't want booting with Windows. Also services.msc (start > run > services.msc) is another way to set what starts when Windows boots. If you don't know what something does (or is dependent on) Google the service. Perhaps one day MS will get it right and get rid of the stupid registry.

Well, I think because lesson wasn't about security but performance and firewalls don't rather contribute to overall performance of the operating system., they just don't use up that much resources, and don't have tendency to slow down the system.

Would using the msconfig help with cleaning up the start up programs also? I use this for myself but if it would make it better using the registry way could you tell me? I would rather do it the correct or better way, i don't like using 3rd party programs and manually is usually better for me.

@amraag2010 Avira isn't on anyones "best of" list... If you want free AVG or AVAST! will do you well. I personally like Microsoft Security Essentials. Tune Up Utilities that you pay for are usually scams. I like CCleaner for basic Registry cleaning and such...

Eli, you're funny but obviously are receiving payment from Apple to say that Macs don't need tuneups. As more and more people use them, more garbage software is being created for them and more issues arise. This reminds me of the salespeople claims that Macs cannot get malware or viruses. Have your Apple shares not made you enough money already? Stop the lies please.
