My very first car was a 69" Datsun 510 with 13 inch deep dish rims with big flairs and it really catches your eyes on the road. It was back in 1985 and I was 19 years old. I bought it for $1000 plus $20 extra for batteries because the owner didn't have any battery in the car. He took a battery from another car then he put it my car. Then I spent another $1000 for body work and painted it red which was called: INDIAN RED which was super bright and it really caught people's attention! It was a 2 door with 4 speed, 1595cc, and I did my personal touch with Alpine stereo with all kinds of cool interior decoration and people loved it! I miss it so much!

Thanks guys for the trip down memory lane ! 510's were my first cars I truly enjoyed & built up, did some Autocross racing at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium in ghe mid 80's ! They were considered old cars even then, lol. I recall a fine spring day in 1984 when about a dozen 510 fellows and I drove all Saturday making a high speed circuit N to Idyllwild / Palm Springs / Borrego Springs back thru Campo / Alpine. Our pack of buzzing 510s was a sight to behold. What a fun memory! Truly inspiring to see enthusiasts modding, driving them today, 35 years later keeping the spirit alive !

I had a 510 as my first car. What a love affair we had! I had the head rebuilt and put a suspension, air cleaner, exhaust and fender flares in it. Also added wide radial tires. It would get to 70mph quick but you needed to bring lunch if you wanted to see 100mph. But it did perfect 4 wheel drifts, especially when fitted with those new-fangled radial tires that came out in the early 70s. I'll never forget the fun we had together...:)

Whow! Guys I just shared tears on watching this video cause my dad had one in 1977 here in South Africa, I learned to drive on this car, for some time it couldn't start on its own, for some reasons my old man took time to repair the starter, we had to kick start the car, and he would call me to rerve it whilst he would go back inside the house to pick up something, you know after that as a young boy of 9 years I would feel so good having done that...lol...that's how easily I learned how to drive. If I could lay my hands on these I would restore it for my old man's memories...I miss him so much, may he R.I.P.

When I was a kid I loved these cars. Still do. But I was the guy with the Camaro while everyone in the heights had 510s and corollas. Let’s not forget the z cars. Still have the Camaro blood in my veins but the 510 has a special place in my heart and soul! I remember everyone would flare the fenders out, put a crazy audio system in, sick paint and interior. But the exhaust note was always my favorite. I would run to my apartment window every time I heard the cars race up at Nicholas Avenue. Try to catch a glimpse of which one it was. Then I turned 16 and bought a 1973 Camaro with side pipes and headers. I officially joined the game. Wish I could do it again .

I had a 1970 510 as a first car. I kept finding parts for it from race track (well, not “finding” them- I had to pester) builders. It lead to an improved experience and spoiled me for the rest of my driving some 45 years later. I came to expect minimal body roll from sway bars, and with the cam, Twin Webber 42’s on Cannon intakes, and a proper custom header gave it enough snap to keep me and everybody else reason to pay attention. It taught me how to drive. I really miss that car.

My '72 was Apple Green, 2 doors. Had to sell it in '74, my insurance was crazy expensive. Bought another some years later but 4 doors, in an yeck banana yellow, clutch toast. Had it fixed only to totale it in a crash. Brother in law helped me to rebuild the front end and the chain cover and pump. My wife painted it Green Apple of course, so we could go on our honeymoon trip tip top. A friend gave me his own 510 that would'nt start, with small Euro mags, nice aluminium/leather steering wheel, Stebro muffler (awesome sound) etc.. Drove it for, what 3 or 4 years and then gave it to my kid brother. He almost killed himself in it, hitting a huge rock in a ditch. I think he still has the bended wheel... WE both miss it dearly to this day...

Unfortunately, Matt wasn't able to really air out that car. As I'm sure he would attest, that unassuming little car is an absolute monster in sheep's clothing. I've owned 510s most of my life, and still have one in my garage today with an SR20det, GT3071r @ 15psi, and Troy Ermish built race suspension. I've driven everything from a GT500 Mustang, BMW M5, Acura NSX, to a Tesla Roadster S, and I'd still take my 510 over any of them. Tuned right, the 40 year old suspension can hold it's own against a Miata, but with 400HP in a car weighing 2000lbs, you have a serious pocket rocket. To be honest, anything over 270HP in a 510 is tire smoke, but let's face it, sometimes too much is just what you need.

Gees.. this video brings back memories. I grew up in a town called kota Kinabalu, a northern state in Borneo. my first car was a Nissan Bluebird SSS 510. Yes it was a two door and it was my first girlfriend before any of the real girls. This car had 12 blubs in total for tail lights! it spanned from the left to the right end of the car. I kept the original 4 piston SOHC engine. At that time, finance wasn't great so I had to work with what I could. I remember having to build the engine. Kept the 1.8 block, oversized piston rings, skimmed a 1.6 nissan engine head, lighten the flywheel, threw in an older 240 Nissan ZX gearbox and kept the old SU side draft twin carburetors. She was fast, had her own personality, and the only other person who could every start up the car was my mum. it was a push button starter and not the common key version. You need to have the right timing to release the button and she would start. That was 33 years ago. I still have dreams of her till today.

I like the fact that you can swap Factory parts from late model cars into this amazing little box. For instant, rear disc brake conversion adopted from the 200SX. The rear diff out of an all-wheel drive Subaru. The list goes on and on. it has been some time since I've been behind the wheel of a dime. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video!

Santiago Fischer Why? Because I want to help out my favourite youtube channel to keep them going strong? Do you walk into a grocery store and walk out without paying? Shit costs money, deal with it. Just be grateful that they're even giving you free stuff. Truthfully, KZbin just needs to give their hard working channels a bigger cut in the revenue, that genuinely would solve everyone's problems. Google is the real greedy entity in this whole thing, not Drive, Drive just want money to pay for expensive videos.
@Munkenba10 жыл бұрын
SpyderRios I just wrote in my last comment how KZbin takes to big a cut from ad revenue. They take 60%, which is insane. Then there's the huge quantity of assholes who get adblock. Ad revenue is fine for people like fast lane daily who do low budget car shows with very little expense. Drive is very expensive to produce, they need more money than someone like Pewdiepie, who may have 30 something million subscribers but he only needs a mic, a computer and a camera and he's pretty much good to go. Cars are very expensive.

Wow. I fucking love these restored 510's! The boxy shape of the car gives itself character and history that cars today simply don't have enough of. I mean look at the rear lights--they're freakin' gorgeous! The raw, visceral structure of the 510 simply feels and sounds very mechanical, which in turn gives to a great driving pleasure. I'll own one of these in the future, for sure.Great video Matt!

You have no idea how happy i am to see what /Drive is doing with their network... I understood why you guys made the switch to /Drive+ but, unfortunately I couldn't swing the budget. But with this new format I get to see my favorite shows and all of the amazing production that I've come to love you guys for. So, thank you, /Drive. And when the wells are less dry, I will invest in a subscription.

I never liked Matt and his vids, but this is awesome work. Car is a fit, spots are a fit, music is a fit and even his comments fit. Matt, awesome work !!! The 1st I very very like. Great job.

Built and raced a few of these, such a fun little car to go club-racing in. Thanks for the trip down memory lane ;)

Very cool 510; I've got to say that it's so fun to watch these videos Matt or regular people doing awesome things to ordinary cars. The swag was def dialed way up on this Datsun!
