If it won't put up with five minutes running without an exhaust, it isn't good enough to fly me across 21 miles of English Channel...I fitted stainless exhaust valves so they will stand more heat than the stock items. Since those days it has done two solid four hour flights without complaint, and still runs sweetly. Thirty odd hours running and had the plugs out, clean, compression is good and tappers are holding exact clearances. This is no short life hand grenade but a tough industrial engine
@KevinArmstrong415411 жыл бұрын
The motor has stainless exhaust valves, and was being run unloaded, strictly time limited as a precaution. So far in flight testing has no valve or compression issues, I built an exhaust after researching length and bore of the pipes using 'net calculators, ideally 1.25" outside or 29mm bore, with a tuned length of around 40" or 1m. Silencer was more tricky, but ended up with a fat expansion vessel on the end of siamesed pipes via a Kinner Cycles swivel joint, then a punched tube baffle to outside air. Climb performance is similar to a 447 Rotax two stroke, 39bhp.

Reduction drive is machined up by Ace Aviation and support and sales in the UK is via Brian Fallows, first one was a joint design effort between Ace Aviation and my engineering firm. Now sold worldwide, mine's got 120 hours on and only one adjustment after bedding in. No wear signs at all, also fit Kohler , Honda, Generac, Subaru with the SAE hole pattern.and works upside down where the prop is lower than the crank centreline. Cheers

This test was to ensure the heavy duty starter would spin it, as the higher compression, hot cam minus stock decompressor and light flywheel defeated the normal starter motor. Puzzled why folk keep going on about this, once installed in the aircraft it always would have long tuned pipes and silencer. Plenty of Merlin engines in WW2 without pipes...;-)

150 flying hours on it now, stripped and checked recently and no wear or problems, stainless exhaust valves fitted. This was just a short run to test the upgraded starter as high compression meant the stock one couldn't turn it over. check out my flying videos

Sounds great…! I caught flack when I put my 670 Predator V twin, in my 1961 Cushman Eagle 🦅 and did a test run of it…! Guys were saying you will burn your exhaust valves..! I don’t think five minutes of running the motor with short Header tubes was going to do any damage to the motor while testing everything out….! I’m 68 years old…! And have been a gear head my entire life …! I do not recall ever BURNING any Exhaust valves, while Running a motor without a exhaust system for a while….! Hell Indian Harley Davidson and most every fast board track racer, had almost a nonexistent exhaust system…! In fact Indian made a couple racers that just used a deflector plate as the exhaust came straight out of the exhaust port….! The carb now is off the 61" engine, 990cc and is 30mm chokes instead of 23mm, this is a big increase in throat area. Jets were fine although I fitted the 5000' jets to lean it a little. Brian's fixed now, even cycling to restore fitness, on holiday this week Aircraft don't need a rev limiter, as the propeller absorbs power to the cube rule, so a small increase in revs takes a LOT of extra torque. This means if a prop's attached and set correctly it is impossible to overspeed the engine, mine stays under 4,300 no matter what I do. On a Kart or similar if you lift a wheel you can easily blow it up, swamp boats are the same and that's why Mudbuddy sell a rev limiter in the USA. You aren't supposed to tune old engines but why not? if it blows up you only end up paying for a new one anyway, so why lay out the dosh without trying the mods...

If you're putting it into a racing Kart Charlie make sure you fit a rev limiter, that flywheel is deadly if it explodes. You can buy them off Mudbuddy in the USA, alternative is to buy the alloy flywheels they sell at EC racing in the USA, watch the heat though as the fan is smaller, or buy a plain steel flywheel and use the stock fan. The Eagle IV is designed for kart racing in the first place...;-)

I'm sure you know that without exhaust pipes when you decelerate the engine cold air gets sucked in around the hot exhaust valves resulting in a chance of crystallizing or warping the valves...
@KevinArmstrong41548 жыл бұрын
Yep, luckily I'd fitted stainless exhaust valves, and ran the motor for a few minutes only. Bigger issues result from mixture reversion (Google it on Harleys) from too short pipes. Exhaust valves perfect after 160 hours...until the camshaft snapped. High lift, stiff springs and no reinforcement, in future recommend going to Precision cams as they reinforce theirs with steel bar down the middle, and make billet ones too.
@Triple_J.13 жыл бұрын
@@KevinArmstrong4154 I've just started researching these motors for a potential Aero-build. Love your vids! The camshaft has come up as a breaking item on three occasions/videos now. It seems they all snap in the mid-100 hour range. Unacceptable (to me) and thank you for that pointer. I suppose the crank is good. The turbo-mower racing guys used forged rods. @Triple_J.13 жыл бұрын
harleycharley No, you can't. That's a wives tale based on strictly non-scientific assumptions. The hottest exhaust ports are found in turbocharged applications, with full exhausts and lots of back-pressure. That's why turbo exhaust valves are much more severe duty than NA cars.

Paul Kersey sound isn’t everything. There was no exhaust installed. Remove the governor and you will have a similar sound. The power will built with a cam upgrade, fuel delivery and spark timing. The internals needs a little help with the valve train. Some people like lighter forged piston and rod assemblies. Lighter flywheels allow faster response which might not be desirable depending on the aircraft. I’ve seen turbochargers installed with fuel injection, on go karts, which would make a lot more power. Just be sure to avoid dangerous operating conditions like too much heat, lean mixture, overspeeding etc.

i googled it... No, that is an old myth which has been around for YEARS. I have been rebuilding engines & cylinder heads for 50 years. I have NEVER seen it happen or seen PROOF of it! Burned exhaust valves ARE caused by Low Spring seat pressure, Loose valve guides, worn out valve seals. Out of those 3 worn out valve seals is what I see most often. Worn seals let too much oil go down the guide. This oil tends to build up and burn into hard carbon on the valve stem. This causes the valve to stick JUST as it is seating. The valve cannot transfer its heat to the seat and burns.

Around 40 kilos or 88 pounds with heavy starter and pipes, it ended up adding five kilos or 11 pounds over the original 447 installed because the Rotax needs a huge silencer and expansion box, this doesn't. installed video here Briggs Vanguard Ultralight Engine ground run and in flight here Climb to 6,344'

Having no exhaust pipes is a good way to burn valves.

Mike Welch 120 hours I stripped it after camshaft broke, the exhaust valves were perfect, but I had fitted stainless steel ones.

Stop cooking that belt! Put a header on it
@KevinArmstrong41543 жыл бұрын
You're way behind mate, this was a quick test run, flew it to France, tested three exhaust designs first, watch my other videos
@caseykelso13 жыл бұрын
@@KevinArmstrong4154 behind in the video sequence, ya . But running the engine without a header even for minutes will heat that belt, and cause extra wear on your valves.just concerned. What about altitude with a lawn mower motor? Are they proven for 10000 ft.? What about oil ,synthetic or regular. And can I know the gear ratio , what rpm is good for cruise
@KevinArmstrong41543 жыл бұрын
@@caseykelso1 Belt is miles away from the exhaust ports, bad viewing angle; exhaust valves were changed to stainless to resist heat. Used synthetic lube, redrive self designed and made by Ace Aviation in India by a friend (Brit) who runs a factory there. Ratio 1.8:1, cruise anywhere between 4000 to 4500, below that get pulse vibrations, above 4800 it gets fussy. Ran 5000 foot jet version of 61 series carb, added a leaning device but it ended up just being a nuisance as it could cause hesitation and another thing to close when landing

@@KevinArmstrong4154 thanks for answering ,can't you have it direct drive and run motor at 3000 ? And I am watching all the videos too. Great content!
@KevinArmstrong41543 жыл бұрын
@@caseykelso1 Direct drive it doesn't make the horsepower, which is torque x rpm. engine rated at 23hp at 3600, with a touch of extra advance and better breathing I saw nearly the same as a 39hp Rotax 447 but exactly half the fuel burn, job done. First time flew from North East UK to Isle of Wight burned over 48 litres, first trip with Briggs burned 23.6 litres.

Be nice if you really Documented what your Building and using, Brand Name, Bore & Stroke, CR used, Carb Size, CAM Spec's, etc. so others can gain knowledge from your work. You can use this Calc to figure out the Volumetric Efficiency of the Stock Engines known Hp@3600rpm, then just Increase the rpm to desired Max rpm, but most Stock Cams peter out around 5000-5500rpm. www.mk5cortinaestate.co.uk/calculator3.php

@KevinArmstrong41547 жыл бұрын
David Raye it was a short test to check out the new starter, I'd got stainless exhaust valves against heat. Flew it for 120 hours until the cast iron camshaft broke, now reinforced with steel bar down the centre
