Tuning 2020+ Ford Explorer | Ford Performance Procal 4

Finally tuned the Ford Explorer, but trying to keep on the sleeper side of things, just did the Ford Performance tune. Whats next for this thing? It's a trip back to the dyno for more testing. Stay tuned for those video's.

Questions you said you were running 87 in the beginning, 1. Did you notice a major difference from stock 87 with the tune? 2. Was that 4.5 0-60 on 87 also or did you fill up with 93 for that? 3. I’ve seen people mention the FP tune is more like an auto octane tune so running 87 shouldn’t be a problem on long trips I’m assuming? Im getting a FP tune shortly( was able to actually get one for free working at a dealer has its perks 😅) thanks for the video really good content!

Good info. I have a question. I was on the lethal performance site and saw the 2 pro cal tunes. One was with the tune and the other without. The one without the tune was about $200 less. In your video are you loading the tune yourself onto the device from the ford performance site or was the tune preinstalled?

I'm trying to get someone I work with to do this to his ST, he just won't do it... I have it on my Mustang gt and love it, did it also on my 17 GT... I love it but you can't drag a horse to water.

After all the hating on this tune compared to zfg and livernois, im pretty impressed . Obviously not zfg. Or livernois , but dang, that's impressive. Did you test the tune on e30 yet ?

I did the dyno testing with e30, I cant remember if I ever did quarter mile runs with it.

How long do you think it took you to install it? I'm curious because ford will be installing one on my 23 ST and wondering how many hours there going to try to charge me for. One tech said it's not bad but the service writer said he didn't have any estimates on how much it would cost. I would assume and hope for less than 2 hours of labor

They have to upload your current file, send it to ford performance and get the tune file back and then install it. 2 hrs is probably how long it will take. Its very slow to install your first tune. Its quicker to read the stock file then installing for sure.

If you buy the ProCal 4, does the tune download cost anything or is it a free download? Once tuned, does it affect the transmission at all when actually towing?

When you buy the ProCal with the specific tune for your vehicle, it does come with the tune. It does not tune the transmission or change shift points. It only removes the torque limiting.

No, you can run any fuel. Its tuned for 87.

I have 2021 Ford Explorer Platinum withthe stock tuned down engine 3.0 twin turbo. I guess it would be good candidates for the tune to get the most power out of this great engine. Does this tune work on Platinum and how to order it?

I don't see why it wouldn't work, check with Ford Performance to double check.

In tow haul and sport it's not on anyways. And I find tow haul is the best for speed and smooth shifts and no skip shifts on stock tune 😊

@Fieldsinv you can buy and have it installed at Ford, it's from Ford Performance. I would check out: www.lethalperformance.com/ford-performance-calibration-w-procal-4-calibration-delivery-tool-2020-2022-explorer-st-3-0l-m-9603-ex30.html You won't get it cheaper from Ford. But it never hurts to ask.

They have one for the 2.3, you would have to check with Ford Performance Parts to be sure which one will work for you.

Bahahahahahha! First of all there are zero changes to transmission shifting in the tune. If anything once tuned the transmission went into learning mode and just happened to become smoother based on your driving pattern. Second. How's it feel to be an absolute dummy for spending that kind of money on 27crank hp vs spending another 30bucks on a zfg tune for around 90 to 120whp increase on 93octane. Which actually has better shift patterns. Before u say "oh my warrenty"... u remove tune before going to the dealers and poof! Warrenty will always be there. Or find a tune friendly ford department.

I didn't know I needed to gain approval for testing out a mod, but good to know. On Fordperformanceparts.com under the tune it says transmission optimization. If the people who make the tune say it changes the transmission shift points, I would be inclined to believe them. Feel free to phone tech support and ask them. When I tuned my jetta, the transmission never needed to do a relearn. I wonder why this one did? Hu, weird!

@Catholic Firefighter thanks man. One thing you said about zero to 60 increase got me thinking, how does 30 hp get you a full second? It can't just be hp. With my tuner, we'll be downloading both tunes and comparing them side by side to see what changes were done to the transmission. When I posted this on the Explorer forum, many people ripped me a part including professional tuners. But one thing the information was based off of, was a generic stock tune, and the file that HP could get their hands on. In a quick comparison to the stock file they had and the FP tune that's on my explorer, there where changes to torque limiting in all gears. Never could I do a burn out with the Explorer with a stock tune and now I did. So let's find out why!

@Catholic Firefighter in the end its engagement and sometimes it forces me to do some more research. I can't wait to hit the drag strip with this thing, they apparently do 12.9 on this tune.

How’s it feel to be so lame that you want to do a tune without having to remove it before taking it into the dealer, and the dealer seeing you wiped everything before taking it in? Wanting a little performance and transmission updates while keeping the warranty, and only having to install it once seems an economical and sound decision.
