Are you a piston guy or a rotor guy? If you identify with the latter then this might well be the most important video you'll ever watch.
Please note that this is not a specific, DIY-type "how to tune" walk-through video, rather an overview of general principles that can be used as a guide to the fueling and ignition requirements of a rotary engine.

As you progress in your research, bear in mind that the word “invention” has a very specific meaning in US intellectual property law (I realize that you may not be in the US): an idea becomes an invention when it has been “reduced to practice,” meaning that the specific method for implementing the idea has been devised. My invention is four years old, and I am just now ready to prototype it. That brings me to another point: manage your finances well, as poverty will delay your efforts beyond the limit of your patience.

In my experience tuning a rotary is equally as complicated/uncomplicated as tuning a piston engine, however with catastrophic failure a likely result of getting it wrong when it comes to rotary

Doktotbimmer thinks if the units sold don't exceed a certain number, it isn't real or important. For him, only major manufacture sales are indicative of proper technology. In other words, he believes in a childish fallacy where he considers quantity signifies efficacy. Doktor, do you comprehend that car companies do no symbolize the country? I am from puerto rico: Zero car manufacturers. Yet i see every year when the usa vs pr event occurs, no one says "nah, y'all don't have any car manufacturers." Fuck that, companies like haltec make it so you can customize your car. P.s. You should review the history of cars and recognize the markets as the main driving force, not the cars themselves. There's plenty of cars that sell that shouldn't have sold well and other cars that were amazing but never sold at all. Thems the breaks, kid. You bitching on this page so odd

@@doktorbimmer So much condescension, and so many assumptions in so few words... DOKTERBIMMER IS A FAKE ENGINEER Allow me to enlighten you; I have not compared it to a 2 stroke in any comments here (though the comparison is entirely valid). I'm not a kid, I'm an Aerospace powerplant development engineer, and a former Mazda technician. I have a comprehensive understanding of the Wankel rotary engine (though I'm not nearly pretentious enough to use non English initials for it when communicating in English). Contrary to popular belief, this engine is not an occult entity of magic and mystery, it is an internal combustion engine. Different in that it is a constant volume pumping unit, and non-reciprocating, but still just an engine that translates thermal expansion into rotational motion like all the others. Don't be an arse.

I've got a correction on how you explain the time intervals. The times you specify are the frequency at which each rotor has a combustion event, not the duration of time for an entire cycle, as you said. The rotor does one full revolution for every three of the eccentric shaft, so each combustion chamber takes 3 shaft revolutions to return to its starting point. That means the cycle time at 6000 rpm is 33ms, but the firing frequency is one third that, at 10ms. The air-fuel mixture actually spends more time in a rotary engine at the same shaft speed.

I don't understand the hate walkers get. My dad has an rx8 that we lpg converted and it as reliable as anything, and with that sound you just can't not love them. And come on 3 moving parts they are just so easy to build and rebuild. Personally I'd have a rotary over piston any day, don't hate it until you've tried it!!!
@SkylineFTW97
@SkylineFTW97 8 жыл бұрын
You're spot on about the moving parts point. I think I know why most people have had problems with rotaries. They don't know that you have to treat them like 2-stroke engines. That you have to let them warm up to avoid flooding. That you have to add oil more frequently. And that you will have to rebuild them more often than a reciprocating engine (even though as you mentioned, they only have 3 moving parts, so it should be incredibly easy).

Nice video! Except the part where you need twice the injector size because you need to inject every rotation instead of every other one like you do with a 4-stroke, which isn't true. You do need a bit bigger injector because you have to deal with the injector 'dead-time' twice as often (which is around 1ms per injection, depending on the injector, battery voltage and pressure), and because the rotary is less fuel efficient in general. The amount of injector you need usually ends up around 40% over that of a piston engine. Besides that, great video.

Nah, it's a rotary engine because it uses rotoids in if use. The "rotary engines" of the plane era had pistons. It's a common misconception amongst plane fanatics. See, yours rotates, so it is a rotary engine. Ours has rotoids and rotates, so it is a rotary engine. It is like calling "rock and roll" rock music, even though modern rock is very different. I recommend you use modern terms, rather than this silly word play you use. It is like the people who use "gay" to mean happy in a gay bar. You know what people mean by gay based on the setting and context. Here, we have people on a wankel rotary video calling it a rotary. Everyone here expects you to understand he means a wankel when he says rotary...it is a bit sad you soent so much time in the comments attempting to correct people for something you're at fault for

Question. Why is he/you comparing a 3 rotor engine (2 liter) to a six cylinder? The rotor only spins a third of the speed of the e-shaft so.... 9k (redline) is only 3k (rotor speed). Yes, the rotor is doing triple duty each rotation, but it's never experiencing 9k rotations per minute. With that said here is my 2nd question: Wouldn't the rotary tuning be focusing on the rotations of the rotors and not the rotations of the e-shaft? Thanks for you time!

I'd be interested to know more about this as well. My brother owns an rx-8 and was telling me something about the models with only one oil cooler having serious overheating issues, but I'm really not sure if the models with 2 are really that much better. So far my brother hasn't had any issues (with 2 oil coolers), but it's only been a couple weeks where it's been 85 degrees here so far. Despite that, I get the impression that it still worries him.
@Ryncewind0
@Ryncewind0 8 жыл бұрын
I can't comment specifically on the oil cooling of RX-8's as I don't know enough about that model. What I can tell you is that Rotary engines run hotter than piston engines due to the fact a lot of the exhaust stroke goes into the exhaust before its fully burnt, if left any longer inside the housing the exhaust cycle can have a negative effect on the rotor face, effectively pushing the rotor backwards and making you lose power, to counter this the timing means combustion is still happening at the start of the exhaust stroke. This is why exhausts on rotary engines are way hotter than on a piston engine. Another reason for higher heat in a rotary than in a piston engine is constantly in a firring cycle unlike a piston engine with 4 stokes. That being said, the actual engine temperature is not that much higher than a piston engine. But the exhaust temperature is much higher. I hope i have answered a question or 2 you may of had. If you have questions feel free to ask and i'll try my best to answer them to the best of my ability.

So rx8 does 238hp with streetport racing beat about 270 hp. There is some porting to get a little more from intake ports not just exhaust ports only. The intake could gain about 5hp and headers and exhaust possibly 10 maybe 15hp. Then the ecu and tune as well with reliable seals and compression should get an extra 10 to 25 hp from stock ecu restriction. Also increasing rpm from 9000 to 11000-12000 and 4.77 rear should help getting 300hp?

doktorbimmer firstly, that would eliminate diversity and that attitude is the automotive equivalent of Hitler’s Aryan race. Eliminating everything that isn’t what one person likes. Secondly, that was years ago. You do realise that rich people in the UK emigrate to Australia because the property market is better and the economy is better, but hey live in the past and a sea of ignorance 😂 rotary’s aren’t unreliable. Bad rotary owners have just never heard of “a bad workman blames his tools” and subsequently spread a bullshit reputation about rotary unreliability because they are too proud to accept responsibility for breaking it. If you are too mechanically ignorant and don’t know much about cars then buy a piston driven car. Don’t buy a rotary and then blame the car when it breaks just because you are too ill equipped to maintain it. It’s the automotive equivalent of a poor man deciding to date a gold digger. He will never be able to maintain the relationship because he hasn’t got the means to do so. Rotary’s are unique, have character and provide a completely unique power production and delivery. To say that you’d rather a 2JZ or an LS which both only offer the same experience that dozens of other engines offer, sounds dreary as hell. A true car enthusiast has no worries about rebuilding engines especially if it is the price they have to pay every 80,000-120,000 miles for a completely unique and incredible experience. Any true car enthusiast will make that deal any day.

doktorbimmer I only ask because it sounds like you have adopted homosexuality as an insult to people who are more well spoken than you, as a defence mechanism to overcome your insecurity about your lack of independence, intelligence or ability with girls 😂 so you immediately resort to homophobia whenever you feel threatened 😂😂😂 it’s also ironic because you thinking that homosexuality is characterised by certain speech or behaviours or even the idea that homosexuality is beneath you is highly indicative of poor understanding and intelligence. Bit of advice, stop giving a fuck what others think, stop thinking that you have to meet a certain criteria to be manly and start being yourself and not giving a fuck what other people think. Sticking to your principles and saying fuck you to anyone who questions them is manly....acting tough and being homophobic and insecure and afraid of being yourself so you behave how you think others want you to behave because they tell you it’s more manly that way, is pathetic and ironic and laughable 😂 little bitches act tough, start fights and use homophobic slurs. Real men don’t give a fuck what little 12 year old troll pussies say to them over the internet. See you remind me of a gypsy Irish kid I bumped into the other day. The little shit was being a dick to everyone in a restaurant. I was sat there with my two mates and my girlfriend. The boy asks my mate if he likes boys or girls. My mate says “both”. He did this to show the mouthy teenager that he was more manly than all the bullshitters who say being gay is wrong. Is my mate gay. No. But he said he was Bi sexual just to show he was confident and dominant and didn’t give a fuck what people thought of him. You need to be more like me and my mates. Stop giving a fuck about other people and stop thinking you are the shit. Because I guarantee you, you’re not. Always a bigger fish my friend. Just enjoy your life and stop trying to be better than others. Life’s not a movie and you aren’t the action star played by Bruce Willis 😂

doktorbimmer I must be gay? How did you draw that conclusion. I’d like an in depth explanation if you are capable of such things that is 😂 go on mate? Explain how you came to the well informed decision that a stranger who you have never met must be gay? Someone who’s sexual habits you are not aware of. So either you were using it as an insult in some sort of hope that I was as ape like as you and so stupid that I would think it was offensive...or you are superhuman and know shit that even I don’t know 😂😂

When you were talking about a rotary requiring something like 2000cc injectors for 400kW, was that 2000cc figure for each individual injector or the sum of volume flow over all the injectors? An NA rotary with 2000cc injectors seems like a lot to me, but then again I guess that is 400kW without boost.

I'm guessing it's due to the tune or not using synthetic premix with E85 and possibly blocking a 2200cc injector.. It's only done 2k since rebuild, dowelled and extend port😢

Hello Scott, thanks for the vid man, you are great! I hope you or someone similary engine/technicly based and wise person can answer me. I'm looking for project, engine swap to be honest and everywhere i look, i get alot of dissapointment. I own VW Golf 4ish car, iron 1.6 8v transverse engine, thats putting around 60kW/135nm on the table. I want to take this number and pretty much triple it (some day). I'm trying to get some engine, that would fit in the enginebay without problems, preferably with turbo (choo choo) and not ruin my budget. However, i don't want to go the VW way, and swap 1.8T/G40/VR6 or similar in there. Japan way seems to be reliable and powerful enough. I though about 4GZE/7GZE and SR20VET so far, but I'm affraid that the SR20 wont fit at all. Parameters to (preferably) aim for, i hope it will help: Belt (Chain) driven 16v, good overall tuneability (let's say 400hp with minor modifications), good reliability (that can withstand years of dailying), size (that will fit my engine bay), reasonable price and gas mileage. Can somebody help me out?

Thank you for the video Mr. Haltech. It is very clear. However I have one question. Where or what triggers the release of the spark to the spark plug(s)? In the piston engine the spark is triggered by the crankshaft (sensor) or the camshaft (sensor). Draw me a picture, please. Thank You, Robert :-)
@haltech
@haltech 7 жыл бұрын
The spark timing is controlled by the ECU, based on inputs from the engine position and speed sensors. This is the same for Rotary and Piston engines, between them its just a differing layout of sensors and spark timing.

Mazda 13B engine has 6 combustion chambers (each rotor side forms a combustion chamber and go trough the 4 stroke Otto cycle as its moves inside its housing) Great to hear you compare it to a TOYOTA 2JZ-GTE 6 cylinder engine because they are equivalent in terms of working combustion chambers. 13B with 6 combustion chambers 2JZ-GTE with 6 combustion chambers. 13B is not equivalent to a 4 cylinder engine, neither because it uses 4 spark plugs and neither because its ignition events are at each 180° of eccentric shaft rotation (4 cylinder engines fire an ignition event each 180° of crankshaft rotation) because in a Mazda 13B engine you got 6 ignition times in its Thermodynamic Cycle, NOT 4! Displacement for Mazda 13B engines is not the nominal displacement of "1308cc" (1.3L) Mazda quoted (They did it to skip paying higher taxes per each engine produced in Japan because there was an Engine Taxation Law) Mazda just counted the work (combustion cycle) done by just one side of each rotor (2 combustion chambers total) and skipped the other 2 sides per rotor (4 combustion chambers total) That's how they gave just 1/3 of its real value (set by its thermodynamic cycle) On a 13B engine there are 6 combustion chambers that displace 654cc each one to go trough a 4 stroke Otto Cycle and it takes 1080° rotation of its eccentric shaft for all them 6 combustion chambers to do so. 654cc x 6 = 3924cc (3.9L) @ 1080° eccentric shaft rotation. Ignition is fired at every 180° of eccentric shaft rotation and there are 6 ignition events on its Thermodynamic Cycle so; 180° x 6 = 1080° (3 rotations of 360°) 13B is not a 1308cc (1.3L) because Mazda said so to cheat Japan's engine taxation laws. It is neither a 2616cc (2.6 liter) because S.A.E used the 720° of the Thermodynamic Cycle of 4 stroke piston engines to give the Wankel Rotary Engine an "Equivalent Displacement" because at 720° of eccentric shaft rotation in a 13B engine, 2 sides per rotor (4 combustion chambers total) have completed a 4 stroke Otto cycle; 654cc x 4 = 2616cc (2.6L) @ 720° of eccentric shaft rotation. Ignition at every 180° of eccentric shaft rotation / 4 igniton events 180° x 4 = 720° Try to make a 13B 2 rotor engine to spin and keep in steady idle with just one side of each rotor (2 combustion chambers) completing a 4 stroke Otto cycle (displacing just 1308cc / 1.3L, 1/3 of its Thermodynamic Cycle) and the other 2 sides of each rotor (4 combustion chambers) not doing their 4 stroke Otto Cycle events. IT WON'T WORK BECAUSE IT IS NOT A 1308cc 1.3L Remove an Apex seal or program the ignition to fire for just one side of each rotor....It won't spin trying to displace just 1308cc (1.3L) It is a 3.9L displacement engine in a compact package.
