Wow, this took the mysticism out of the whole tuning thing. Got me a Sammick Sage and it came freshly packed with no earthly idea of how to tune it. I didn't even have the brace height figured in or the string twisted (shows how much I know). The recurves I've shot have always been pre-tuned already, like my Dad's Bear from the 1970's. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video!

Thanx James. I just looked at your website and noticed the area code 805, I used to live in SLO county. Santa Maria high school is where I wore my high school b-ball shorts on back-wards during the game warmup.

Nocks on new arrows were too tight, and my new string stretched. Traditional archery has a few kinks to work out, but it is more fun than my compound bow. Any more tips are greatly appreciated!

great video. I think. I just had a hard time following the arrow groupings because they were hard to distinguish and focus on with the Hay Bail as the target. Everything sort of washed out in the image. But that's more of a production comment than it is a content comment. The info seems good. Maybe try a more plain target like white or a paper archery target pinned to the hay bail. Thanks

@Diamondbackarchery8 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the video. As far as care for your old bow, if it has a finish on it, it should be fine. If you want to refinish it, I recommend fuller plast varnish. Avoid using lacquer because it tends to crack...it doesn't bend well. Hope this helps.

Good video! For a left hand bow, if the spine is too weak the bare shaft will strike to the right of the fletched arrows? - and too stiff the fletched to the right of the bare?
@Diamondbackarchery8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay. If its too week, the bare shaft will hit to the right, and if too stiff, the bare shaft will hit to the left. Hope that helps.

Great info! I'm starting out with trad after years of compound. Really struggling with the tuning. I have a draw length of 28". A 50# ben p gamester and a 40# ben p couger. Shooting GT expedition hunters 3555. Do you have a good recommendation for spine on each bow? I think the 3555 should work, just checking. Thinking of getting 2 blade 125 Magnus stingers, should I consider something else? Your response is greatly appreciated!
@Diamondbackarchery10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick. Before you invest in the broadheads, you should find out what weight field point you need, then match your broadhead to that. That particular arrow (3555) will probably work with both bows, just figure out what weight points you need for each bow. I would guess, for the 50# you will need a 100 grain, and for the 40# probably 145 / 170 grain. This is assuming the arrows are full length. Hope that helps. Any other questions, feel free to email me james@diamondbackarchery.com or call 805-878-4151

In the video you said to disregard whether your arrow tails were leaning left or right in the target, and to just focus on whether the arrows were hitting left or right of your aiming point. This is different advice than many others, including Ken Beck of Black Widow Archery (see his video here on KZbin) have said. I'm confused!
@Diamondbackarchery9 жыл бұрын
slysphinx You're right, I should have explained it better. When your arrow is flying at a slight angle, and it hits your bales, it tends to exaggerate the angle, making you think your bow is way out of tune. If you try to just watch it in flight you might think you see it going at an angle when you're really just seeing the archers paradox. So if you focus on where your arrows are hitting, I think you will get your best results. Hope this helps!

There is one thing i cannot understand - after adjusting nock-point height for unfletched arrows you ruin previous setting for your fletched arrows. So, explain pls.

The running joke with all of my compound shooting friends is that tuning a traditional bow is just like tuning a didgeridoo, you just smack it against a tree and see what happens.

A very misleading video when talking about arrow spine....this dude is a left handed archer and so the "arrow left/right" would be reversed for the more common right handed archer. Also it is not so much about whether the bare shaft is left or right but rather if the nock is left or right.
