You need a mob switch to use a tunnel bore reliably. Look into zombie villagers designs. They are simple, if a little time consuming.

yeah i know what a mob switch is but thanks. this was just some small term fun server with friends where i just wanted to get "rich" on the server quickly, nothing too serious

Ahh, I gotcha. I had mine destroyed like three times by creepers before I finally built a switch. But if I were doing it on a temp mp server I would deff not bother with a mob switch either. 70 mobs took days, I can't imagine how long multiple mob caps would take.
