I don’t think many of the commentators here get it. The Tobin is being damaged faster than we can fix it. It desperately needs a replacement, and a tunnel is both the easiest and most resilient option. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” doesn’t apply here. It IS broken, it IS being fixed, but it’s still not enough.

Have kids from schools submit designs & solutions to be considered for implementation. We need programs like that to inspire kids. My nephew is 8 & has amazing architectural potential & I want him to submit his bridge or tunnel design to help our society & make him feel he is doing his part.

Yet the overhaul of the MBTA gets ignored.

So they are going to spend enormous amounts of money on a second Big Dig with minimal or no provision for public transit. And it will be yet another tunnel in which you have to breathe internal combustion exhaust and tire particles.

Tobin bridge is getting old and will need to be replaced at some point in the not too distant future.

Leave the bridge alone!

I mean I doubt a project like this in MA would cost more than 15 Billion dollars. Sounds like a no brainer

I disagree with a tunnel because I love the views you see of the Boston skyline when you drive across the bridge

Not another big dig! They'd have to do another big dig from City Square Charlestown to Carter Street Chelsea! Just say 'NO' to a Tobin Tunnel. The money would be better spent on the NSRL and quality regional rail!

Have to see in the footage of the flooding in one of the tunnels in we should keep it above water.

Whatever they go with will take at least 10 years before they decide and 25 years before a replacement is completed.

And if it's falling apart faster than it can be fixed then greater Boston will have to do without a Northeast Expressway between Rts. 93 and 16 for awhile.

So China can build a bridge in 2 years and you think American can't do a tunnel bridge in less than 5 years?

Leave the Maurice J. Tobin bridge alone, please. If it truly was defective, then it should have been replaced as part of the Big Dig project which saw the Leonard P. Zakim bridge open to vehicles, let alone the Thomas P. O'Neill tunnel a.k.a. Tip O'Neill tunnel replace a long bridge over Boston that is now the Rose Kennedy greenway. Like the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
