FishplateFilms no tunnels on my district but there is a cool curved tunnel not to far from me in Chattanooga, TN on the Tennessee Valley RR Museum that was built before the Civil War. @@FishplateFilms it turned out pretty good, I'm happy with it. Problem will be to put the hill over it, as one section of the tunnel is very close to the back scene, which is screwed to the edge of the board. I don't want to glue the hill to the backdrop because I would need to unscrew it if I need to move my layout. Unfortunately I don't have a video. Maybe I could send you a photo somehow...

G'Day Gregg. Nicely done matey, looks 'Real' impressive, I for one can't wait for the day when the cab ride goes from start to finish on the Sub. An idea maybe to think about, as a long term project, for that final day when the "Birdwood Sub Division" is complete, is a montage of a cab ride that as it progresses down the line, the layout changes as we watch from its humble beginnings to the completed master piece we all know it will become. Should make for one damn fine video! :D

Very cool Greg, love the video ! Have you ever thought about using drywall mud? I have used it for roads, grade crossings, sidewalks and even foundations under some buildings. If you see Lord Stanley , wish him well for me won't you?

Thank you ! I have used dry wall mud when carving rocks, but it is a bit smooth for the look I was after for the tunnel. It is good for rocks and I manly use it to make extensions or joins to rock moulds. I shall pas on your regards to Lord Stan. Cheers Gregg.

Gregg, Those tunnels look amazing. All you need left is to apply a small layer of Sculpt It and paint the plywood the same wash and ballast the track and you won't be able to tell its a model. I have a F7A dummy locomotive that I have installed a spy camera inside the cab where the engineer would sit. I'm curious to see how that would look going through your tunnels. - Jason

the spoon is a useful tool. my case of concreting and plastering tools contains a butter knife, a soda spoon (teaspoon with a long handle), desert spoon, tablespoon and a soup spoon. the soup spoon got used more than the other spoons. a squirty bottle can give you more time when the plaster starts going off. i'm sure you already know that trick.
@68Jaguar420G3 жыл бұрын
It certainly does look pretty good for a gunite over blasted rock tunnel. I wouldn't worry too much about a derailment in either tunnel if you've taken care laying the track. Derailments tend to happen at switches or on poorly aligned rail joints so even curves are reasonably trouble free. And you can always get one of the mechanical extended handgrips to extend you reach into the tunnel if need be. I expect the real trick here is to ballast the track with sharp margins on the ballast edges so the tunnel liner can be lowered into place with a minimal gap between the liner walls and the ballast. . You can easily touch up the ballast for the first few inches inside the portal but after that it becomes more of a challenge. The lack of ballast became quite noticeable when you ran the camera train and surprisingly disconcerting considering how limited a normal view into the tunnel is!
@FishplateFilms2 жыл бұрын
Thank you ! This was a trail and I will be ballasting before tunnels on the new layout! Cheers Gregg.

Have you thought about cutting a sponge the same size as the tunnel, then put your final layer of stuff in the tunnel. Knock off the 90 degree angles of the sponge and either round them or make them about 45 degrees. Then just drag the sponge through the tunnel to give it a consistent finish.

the ‘penny’ just dropped for me, why is Greg going to so much trouble for something you don’t see. Well the video footage says it all, of course you have to prototypically line the the tunnel if you are doing video running, and I for one dislike video footage of ‘unfinished’ sections below the layout proper. So well done, and of course the Birdwood Subdivision doesn’t have derailments!!
