But unfortunately, there are not much testimonies of her in her signature role of the Chinese princess ...

You can really hear her overtones in this live recording! I wished I had heard her in this!!!! I heard her in the Verdi Requiem and her voice was HUGE and also lyrical and beautiful.

I was fortunate to have heard her in this role at the Chicago Auditorium in the early 80s. She was absolutely stunning.

This is a lyric voice for sure but with great great vocal power and equal beauty. Very rare instrument.

I saw her live in Turandot about 25 years ago or more, and she was wonderful. Very exciting high notes. You say "lyric voice for sure" but did you hear her live? Anyhow, she was the most exciting Turandot I have heard live in the last 40 years. I wish she had a bigger career, and am not sure what happened to prevent that. Maybe her size? Sad.

@@aaronmalone7065It is not. This is a lyric soprano but an A class lyric soprano which we do not have right now. This voice is lighter than Tebaldi, Maria Caniglia or Milanov. And these 3 sopranos are the epitome of stereotypical spinto sopranos.

@@gb9971 The size itself was not an issue - esp when one considers what roles she sang. I guess the problem was the issues that came with that size. People who are that big normally have big issues, otherwise they would not have got to be that large. Deborah Voigt touches on that in her book. Obviously there were reasons behind her size and having to cope with that size on a day to day life within the working opera house environment means there is a higher level of difficulty for all involved. Marc mostly travelled alone and this presents huge challenges for her and people involved. There was an accident and subsequent issues at the MET and basically that ended her career. Her version of what happened is obviously different to the MET's. I may be wrong but I think she subsequent had weight loss surgery and married and had her child (maybe not in that order). Amazing document - what a voice she had! I totally agree - she was absolutely superb in Elektra - ideal combination of gorgeous timbre and huge power. One of my favourite recordings too. I wish I had heard her live in that role.

I don't think that she ever sang Elektra live ... yes the soft and round timber brought special feminine qualitie in these roles where the habitual big dramatic voices can sound a bit 'rough and sharp' ...

Very impressive, especially her use of dynamics. Most sopranos just scream it out. Re Elektra, I saw as Chrysothemis, Polaski as Elektra.

Yes she sand Chrysothemis on stage but I don't think she did Elektra un fortunately ... her german language was very good too (she spent her first years in Berlin I believe)

I think she recorded Elektra, but I’ve never heard of a stage performance. I just want to add that I saw many other Elektras besides Polaski, who was wonderful. I saw onstage Nilsson, Jones, Behrens, Goerke, Stemme, Schnaut. My favorites, by far, were Jones and Behrens. My experience with Nilsson was simply too late in her extraordinary career.​​⁠

YES, PLEASE !! I would very much appreciate having this entire performance on video ! I was never offered this video. For the record, I would STILL be performing this role, other roles and ALL of my concert repertoire, were it not for the lack of my having good management! My voice has been and STILL IS TODAY, in it's absolute prime right now, and is in great shape!! Thanks SO very much for posting this video!! But I will be happy to provide you with another one. I also recorded other videos during this period when we had this nice friendly relationship and I was traveling to share with you and atend your performamnces as much as possible. Aida in Verona, Turandot in Macerata, Frau ohne schatten in Berlin ... all of which I am pretty sure I gave you copies at that time (as I was doing for all the artists featured in my video recordings). I heard her sing this “live” in Philadelphia. She was excellent. Whoever is conducting here needs to be fired. The WORST conducting of this aria in history. Poor Alessandra. Dragged beyond endurance.
