This is hands down the best TH400 rebuild video on KZbin! This was just like or maybe even better than observing my auto tech college transmission instructor twenty eight years ago :-)

i have to say this is one of the "best" transmission rebuild videos i have seen! Really enjoy all your videos. Not having rebuilt any transmissions since vocational school which was 1990 i rebuilt 2 different 400 turbos. This is a good refresher for the one i'm going to rebuild for my olds cutlass. Thanks again !

Really amazing couple clips. I know more than ever why I would never do what you just accomplished... Pretty darn amazing and so well done. Thanks. I did do a servo replacement, separating valve body on a Sunday (unnecessarily as it turned out) on my sons 06 Ram a while back. dropping 7 balls all over. Fun finding a spot on the internet to show me where the balls had to go, (Thanks Cascade Transmission)

Killer videos man, I appreciate you taking the time to do it. It will help me tremendously! I can't tell you how many times I was yelled at in A&P school to not let T-gauges "Snap" into the inner bore lol, I never noticed any damage... Anyways thanks again!

Very nice video, very in-depth and clear. I didn't actually "blueprint" mine, but after a rebuild, it runs like a clock. Amazing brute of a transmission, even if it's only got 3 gears hahaha

A good example would be the old Jeep Wagoneers used a 400 and the later say 80s used a 727. But both were used behind the 340 AMC motors.

it is important too check your ''a-b'' measurement before swapping tail shaft from a two wheel drive to a 4 wheel drive bellhousing or vise versa even if bolt pattern is the same. for example ford th400's have 1/8th differance than a chev or gm witch means your tourque convertor will not properly seat causing pump issues over time and a lot of vibration at low idle along with poor performance.A-B measurment is how far the tourque convertor seats into the tranni in relation to the bellhousing mounting surface.learned this the hard way was not mentioned in repair manual.enjoyed the vid thanks!

Just like to say very well done on "This is not a instruction video". Very knowledgeable and helpful. I kinda wish all vid's I see are clear as you were! Thank you for sharing. Question? In your rebuilding, do you trouble shoot trans problems? Or do you just rebuild when there's a problem? Again nice to see thoroughness and clearness in a video.
@Oldsmob4558 жыл бұрын
Problems should always be troubleshooted as best as possible before shooting the parts cannon at them.

OK. I am working on a 1987 Chevy Blazer. Has a 350 Engine with a Turbo 400 Transmission. When torn apart, it had 5 check balls total. I diagramed where they went and put that many back in, in the same spot. After rebuild, Transmission worked fine for 2 days, then started not wanting to shift right, lost forward gears with reverse only working. After letting it set, we went to drive it again, had forward gears back, but problems with going into second. So we tore the transmission down again to find that the retainer ring that holds in the intermediate clutch plates was warped and not in the case properly. I've never seen one do that ever, and I've been doing transmissions for a while now.

On your tear down you make the comment that if you were only planning on changing output shaft, that you could stop the tear down from proceeding any further after only removing the valve body, as if then all you would need to do is remove the case to center support bolt to remove the output shaft. Perhaps I misunderstood your comment, although I'm sure you would agree that you have to completely tear the trans. apart to remove the shaft.

This is a great tutorial for the TH400. I found an inner lip seal and an inner beveled seal (without a thin lip) in my rebuild kit. They have the identic size for the inner size of the intermediate piston and the direct drum piston. Does anybody knows where to use the lip seal and where to use the beveled seal.

"if you have the right tools and complete rebuild kit".. than the modern gm at.

Excellent 'non-instructional video'! I just tore down the entire thing exactly as the video 'non-instructed' with 1 exception. I was not able to remove the sun gear. I've never attempted anything this involved so I don't know if this a bad thing or it's just held in place by some retaining clip / snap-ring. should I keep going?

Need help! I have a TH400 that I found out the Speedometer drive gear clip is missing making my speedometer not working. The drive gear is plastic and has the groove for the clip but it is not on the shaft or the gear. I pulled the tailshaft housing and it is not anywhere. I pulled the pan on the transmission and still don't see it. Where could it of moved to? I was thinking of pulling out the Governor to see if it fell into that area but am concerned I will create more problems removing it. Will things fall apart or will it all stay together if I remove it?. (Transmission is still in the car). I tried reaching into the transmission from the output shaft area but don't feel it there. I used a magnet to move around and didn't feel it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't solved this issue I may be able to help. B&M sells a kit with selective springs and weights that works well. Takes a bit of trial and error but you can get it dialed in with a little time. Also I have a valve body trick for first gear that may help. Message me if you like.

I gotta question (total transmission noob), I was researching how to change the shift points on my 454SS (400 turbo) and it said change the weights in the governor, it shifts at 4k I was wanting about 4,500 to 5,000, would the shift point change kit suffice? It also has 260,000 miles on the trans too so I don't want to take a chance at tearin it up. Thanks!

I had it banged into me in Grammar School back in Yorkshire...now English Grammar is one of my pet peeves....LOL...I am working on my latest creation...a Super 7 on steroids...that is one way it was described at Portland ABFM...Unfortunately using an old 400 it has been somewhat problematic.....replaced with another "good " : used unit...well many years ago...and now we have no gear movement ...initially we had some but I think we may have sucked up some old fluid perhaps into the valve body...Replaced the filter and refilled fluid and now nothing...
