The Bmw m52b28 turbo has just come back from mapping at BMS performance after making 400bhp on the dyno.
As you can see from the start of the video all was well at 1st, but unfortunately the bottom end has started to knock.
We think we caught it early so hopefully no damage to the crank shaft. We will get the engine removed and inspected and refit some new race bearings.
Stay tuned, plenty more to come on this build.

Theres two different oil pumps. They are two different sizes inside. One has a extra 4th hole for a bolt you dont use on the outside case.( That extra hole is a loop mounted to the oil bypass tube where the spring sits inside. ) Thats the smaller one for non vanos / m50 cars. The oil pump with no extra bolt hole has a wider impeller. Also make sure your oil bypass spring and plunger are set up right and not gummed up. Make sure the pick up screen is clean. Make sure no cracks , even tiny ones in the pick up tube. these motors have 10 or 15 psi pressure at idol (and warm) with the big pump.(oil pressure in the oil cap) It does not take much to have less than that. If you like to creep around parking lots in 1st at idol, or any other extended loads at idol / sub 1500 rpm..... DONT! not enough oil pressure to protect the bearings.

It's actually bent a rod in the end.. Its an m52 engine so assume it has the bigger pump?

Is this a aluminum block? ( nothing but heart ache with a turbo ) If so I would swap it all to a m50 block next time it needs to be torn down. (95% of M52b28 is a iron block in the u.s.a. , m52b28tu was the first aluminum only version. ) m52b28, m54b28tu, m54b25, all use the same crank. Same rod length, and same wrist pin location. M54b30 , and the s52b32us use the same crank and rod length, and wrist and wrist pin height. M54b30 is a smaller bore. Lots of combinations out there if you built a m50 block on the side. All the 84mm bore stuff is a direct swap. You can even fit dual vanos onto a m50 block with a little work. ( my next motor will be a s52b32us with a zhp dual vanos m54b30 cam set up. )

Bent rod is best it could be. I always prefer its self inflicted. Plus , you know what caused that.(*wink) oil pressure issues are harder to track down. Thanks for the fast reply. Just found this channel , subbed for sure. Im no youtuber , but I do have a few videos of my current turbo s52b32us e39it. ( I have a handfull of old bmw/ pre g.m. saab stuff , some two stroke ) I have a 94 e36 in alpine white/black as well.

Fwiw my current s52b32 came, built by a race shop. Parts for it came from a trusted mechanic. No one cought the smaller pump had been swapped in the pile of parts . I only know because My achillies drop in pump shaft would not fit. (Bought a new s52b32 pump with the correct part numbers before I ever installed it. ) m54 pumps sit taller. A.k.a. it sits further up into the block. ( I have no experience with aluminum m52s or their pumps , only internet lore that says its all the same m52 iron/aluminum/ m50 pumps. (S50b30us and s52b32us are just punched out iron m52s. Iron M52s are just obd2 capable m50 blocks. I do own a 2000 528 , its an alumiunum m52b28tu, however they are almost identical to a m54 with dual vanos.

@Drew Davis yes alloy block, completely standard bottom end.. plan is to forge it next. I'll have a look at your videos, I am no youtuber either lol, just a bit of hobby on the side, nice to document some of the stuff we work on.. Appreciate the sub mate..
