Hi Bud. How do you stop the lid from warping? With my 1st build the acrylic was not thick enough so the lid did warp quite bad. I am hoping with the better material this wont happen but if there`s a way to stop it i`m all ears. Cheers

I laminate a piece of 1/4" sheet PVC on to the acrylic. PVC doesn't warp. Generally, neither does PETG but that stuff is $$$. I just bonded the PVC to the acrylic with PVC cement.

Do you sell just the lights, and do you think one light is sufficient for a 6x7 single sided screen?
@kevinhelfrich66219 жыл бұрын
BeverlySkillz I have been looking for some good lights for my own algae scrubber build and a wanted to share some great inexpensive options I found in order of my top pick first: www.ebay.com/itm/221708884782 (you would probably only need a 10 or 20watt for your size screen) www.amazon.com/TaoTronics%C2%AE-Plant-Hydroponic-Garden-Greenhouse/dp/B00GNWK2XO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430934007&sr=8-1&keywords=e27+led+grow+light www.ebay.com/itm/181593820102 (here is an 18watt option, but the 2red/1blue ratio has too much blue for my liking. it should be like 3-5 red to each blue)

BeverlySkillz Here are some guidelines I found on how many watts of LEDs you may need based on size of screen. Hope this helps. algaescrubber.net/forums/showthread.php?1711-DIY-LED-Scrubber-Lighting-Guidelines-and-Builds

Kevin Helfrich thanks for jumping in, I've been extremely busy. The ebay one has too much 630 in it, you really don't need any 630. The amazon one is decent but multipchips have their drawbacks, as far as the ability to place close to the screen, especially with a wide reflector. Fixtures are available with 'deeper' reflectors which allow you to place the front of the fixture closer and get a better spread. The shallower ones result in a hotspot in the middle of the screen = no growth

Kevin Helfrich That's a bit of an outdated link and I can't update it since I'm banned there. This is the updated DIY LED and stock LED recommendations www.algaescrubbing.com/threads/algae-scrubber-basics.264/#post-4856

BeverlySkillz Ido sell just the lights, but right now I'm stalled out on production because I have a revised LED board in process. Should be a few weeks and I'll have the LED boards in stock, which still use 660nm LEDs but instead of Royal Blues for supplementary bandwidth, they use Hyper-Violets. For a 6x7 screen, going by these recommendations www.algaescrubbing.com/threads/algae-scrubber-basics.264/#post-4856 that is about 40 sq in, so you would want one 660nm Deep Red for every 4-8 sq in (on each side) so that's between 5 and 10 DRs per side. This would be something along the lines of 2 of my LED boards which have 6 DRs and 2 HVs (each). The chips can be run on separate channels, or in series. The new boards can be operated on a dimmable Meanwell driver so you can adjust them for intensity as required, depending on what growth stage you are in. I also have a custom driver in the works which is controller ready. If you wanted to use one of my stock fixtures, using the MakersLED heat sinks, you would want to make the screen a bit wider as the larger version is designed for a 12x4 screen, the smaller for a 4x6. You could run the smaller fixture on a 6x7 screen, that would work OK but you would be a bit on the low end of light level, probably OK. How much are you feeding, what size is the tank?

Bud. Could you do the small unit without light fittings?.......that`s everything except the LEDs and heatsinks?
@budcarlson18 жыл бұрын
+steve lane for the Rev 4 (coming in a few weeks) this could be an option but you would have to retro-fit a fixture somehow. Same thing for the older units. Sorry for the delay, I was on a vacation that did not go quite as planned and it messed up my schedule for the week after

do any type do any algae scrubber take away red slime. thinking of get a hug .5 because I am limited to space
@budcarlson18 жыл бұрын
+i If you are very space limited, and you can't fit in a waterfall scrubber, then the HOG might be the way to go. They do work well for some, especially in smaller tanks. Red slime algae is Cyanobacteria, and is probably the last thing to disappear after an algae scrubber gets mature. Cyano can make it's own fuel from the waste in the tank, so it's generally an indication of a bigger problem, such as poor flow, lighting issues, overfeeding, or inadequate filtration. It could also just be part of the maturing phase of the tank, and will go away on it's own. Here's my favorite article of all time on this issue - go to Myth #15: www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-01/eb/
