We Are BACK! And this time on SPPTV work continues on the Junkyard 5.3 S475 foxbody Mustang build, The Sonicstang! When we last saw the build the hotside was just beginning, but in this episode we finish fitting and tacking it together!
The Sonicstang's hotside is a divided system with a T6 flange and 2.5" pipes. It utilizes the factory truck exhaust manifolds reversed. The merge was custom built and you can watch that in a previous video!
A lot of time was taken fitting the pipes and keeping the gaps tight. I don't have much confidence in my welding skills, so I am hoping tight gaps will make the welding easier and result in less exhaust leaks.
In the next video the hotside is welded up, and work begins fitting the coldside piping through the firewall, and air to water intercooler under the dash.

Dude good job fabricating that exhaust. You should pull that radiator to keep from banging it up while welding and installing in the cramped engine bay.

This is the perfect video for me to watch before going to work on my hot side. Do you know how many horsepower I'll be losing by doing it all in flux core... you seem like you have the math down on that stuff haha! Keep her up Mike!

One small point on your crossover, thermal expansion, the new way is with flex couplings that a lot of people have problems with failing, the old school way was a slip joint that allowed the pipes from one bank to the other move a bit without breaking shit. Good luck and keep on doing what your doing!

There are videos out there that prove when you dent piping it has minimal to zero affects. As long as it's not mangled u should be just fine. Denting headers has always been a heart ache for folks but in reality it does nothing.

Hey Mike have you thought about flipping the manifold and run the throttlebody into the firewall? That'll make piping super short and easy. Keep up the good work guys👌
@SPPTVarmy
@SPPTVarmy 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't want to use one of the plastic intakes to do that, asthetically it is not the best. But I may buy a cast aluminum carb style intake and do it that way now. It will be in an upcoming video.
@derekhansen6652
@derekhansen6652 5 жыл бұрын
If your running an air to water under the dash, you can mount the intake backwards and feed right through the firewall instead of running piping all around the engine bay

Glad to see you back on KZbin again. Question for you: don’t you think you need some flex joints in your hot side? The turbo mounts solid on the frame and if pipes are welded solid I would be concerned about engine flexing and breaking hot side pipes. Just food for thought
@SPPTVarmy
@SPPTVarmy 5 жыл бұрын
The engine is solid mounted as well, so it shouldn't be an issue. The Shithorse was done the same way.

When I was doing my turbo build on my truck I thought making the hotside out of the old exhaust piping would be the easy part, but I didn't have a welder so I just picked up a cheap one from Harbor Freight and my step-dad at the time had experience with welding so I asked him he could weld it for me since I had limited piping and didn't wanna waste any of it. Well he didn't like the flux core welder so he went and borrowed a stick welder of all things and needless to say my current crossover is fucking butchered lol
