So whats the difference between a Turbo Plane and a Ball Gouge? Where do each of these two tools from Arbortech shine?

Just gave to Turbo Plane for it's first spin on my last project and that thing is such an awesome tool! Now I just need to think of a project to use the Ball Gouge on as an excuse to get one ;)

I saw the leg, it came out very nicely. Now you just need to get the contour sander (that ones obvious!), the power chisel so you can make a wooden boot and carve all the fine details in, the turboshaft so you can drill the lamp holes quicker... ;)

Very good review I'd love these in my tool box but there so expensive and a little out of my reach at the moment I'd love the whole arbotech range it would make carving so much easier. Cheers Tim from Wood 4 Nothing

Essentially the turboplane excels at external shaping and planing, it will do flat, and curved surfaces, chamfering, beveling, carving, etc. The ball gouge excels at interior surfaces, hollowing out cups, bowls, etc. I've got the turboplane, it's brilliant. I might well invest in a ball gouge for hollowing out, if I don't or can't use the lathe.

I see that in this viedo a kind of adapter is utilized to attach the ball gauge to the grinder. Is this a m14 to 5/8 adapter or something like this? Because the only gauge I can get is the one which is commercialized en America (need a 5/8 thread) and the grinder I have has a m14 thread. Do anyone had the same problema? Does this tool work well with and adapter?

I think I saw in another of your videos that you have the mini carver by arbortech. Can you compare the mini carver to the angle grinder attachments you have? Maybe a video? I'm trying to decide on which to purchase
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 3 жыл бұрын
It's more or less a matter of scale. The larger angle grinder attachments like the turbo plane are great for bulk stock removal, and wide sweeping organic forms, but you can't get fine details. Mini Carver can get much finer details, and it can removal a lot of material just not fast. Then you've got flexshaft/burr tools that are smaller and finer again. With knowing what you want to carve, the Mini Carver would be my go-to first tool/the one I'd pick if I could have just one. Good amount of detail, plus the variable speed means you can drop it down low to actually sand and get a close to finish ready surface.

Have you seen a planing sled using angle grinder/turbo plan like many make for use with a router and 3/4" planing bit? It seems as though it'd be much quicker! (Although we'd need to get creative with making a base/sled for an angle grider).
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 5 жыл бұрын
I.havent. that'd be efficient but mildly terrifying! I think it'd be a bit too tricky to keep the grinder flat, and then without a plunge mechanism if you need to adjust the depth of cut, a fair bit of work would be involved
@livewiya
@livewiya 5 жыл бұрын
My first thought was that some sort of base (that would slide within the sled) would have to be made that could fasten where the angle grinder's guard usually is. Playing around with this is low among other projects but if I do, I will report out

Thanks Paul. Roughly how long did it take you to hollow out the 'Bowel', with the ball Gauge?

About 7 minutes, though I've been told by Pete G that I go *waaaaay* too softly with the Ball Gouge. I'm trying to con him into doing a video to teach me :D

I encourage you to try hand carving some dried Australian native timbers, especially the likes of jarrah and redgum. Maybe throw in some spotted gum for fun

Are you demonstrating this on those woods? I like the video, but as someone who loves to buy gadgets, I needed context for what woods to use this with.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 3 жыл бұрын
I exclusively use Australian woods since I don't have to import them, they end up cheaper than exotics like maple or walnut. The red wood in this video was redgum.
