You need to clock the center of the turbo so that the oil drain is straight down. The way it is currently, oil is sitting inside the turbo and passing through intake and exhaust seals. Hence the amount of smoke. Adjust the wastegate so that it’s always open until you get it running right with the way the piping is setup. Then slowly adjust the wastegate 1lb at a time until you reach the desired psi. I’d hate for it to happen but a bent rod is in the very near future otherwise. Looking forward to future videos.

Might also need a small scavenge pump for the return if the turbo is the same level with the tank it will back feed to the turbo can’t tell by the video of the heights if anything just run a can underneath the quad to test if the drain is the problem with it smoking as well as the feed position

I love that your giving it a go but there are a few things to change. The oil lines need to be as short as you can get them. If the drain goes up you need a scavenger pump to send it back to the tank. The turbo needs to be clocked to in at the top and out at the bottom. You need a flair on the boost pipes otherwise under full boost they will keep popping off. I hope this helps you and I can’t wait to see it running properly 👍
@motoshack1031
@motoshack1031 2 жыл бұрын
One thing I’ve not seen people mention is you really need a fuel pressure regulator that runs at default around 3psi and goes up in pressure at a 1:1 ratio so for example for every 1psi of boost pressure you’re getting 1psi extra fuel pressure, not to mention you need a good flowing electric fuel pump that makes at minimum more pressure than the turbo ever could, your fuel pump could make up to 80psi for example but the fuel pressure reg would limit the pressure to boost pressure +3psi so let’s say you get on boost and you make 14psi of boost the fuel pressure reg would have you running about 17psi of fuel pressure to the float bowl and as you come off boost it would drop back down to 3psi, I hope this helps! 🙌
@Dm-cr5lk
@Dm-cr5lk 2 жыл бұрын
Think the fuel boost regulator only works on fuel injected systems with a return style system. That’s how it is on my mustang supercharged. It cuts off the return and spikes the pressure to add fuel instead of bigger injectors.. don’t think work on carb
@KrustyQuad
@KrustyQuad 2 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what he needs and the only way to do it ( that I know of at least).. with the fpr setup there is also a return line so fuel is constantly flowing in a loop... this is also why he won't need to increase the jet size by much if any at all, makes tuning and dialing in the setup much easier
@motoshack1031

@@KrustyQuad Yeah the only reason I know this is as a child when living back home we had a Renault 5 GT Turbo which used a carb and had the same return style system as does my current side by side project, it’s uses the stock setup from the donor bike which was a Yamaha XJ650 Seca turbo which again uses that same style system, if the manufacturer’s are using it then it has to be the best way! 👍

Also this may help or may not as far as gaskets. Kinda surprised you didn't already know this. It's fairly easy to make a gasket. My uncle showed me many years ago before he passed away how to make them. I didn't have a gasket and couldn't get one at the local auto parts store. He grabbed an old 12 pack Mt Dew box and grabbed my thermostat housing and a ball peen hammer. He put the housing in a vice placed the box over the housing unit the way he wanted and started tapping on the box laid over the housing. He tapped and tapped all the way around it on the edges until the edges of the housing had completely cut a gasket out perfectly. Didn't have to do any trimming or anything, it worked perfectly.

Hay man, the oil drain needs to be pointed down so gravity can pull it out of the turbo. That's probably why it's smoking so bad, and the return line to the oil tank needs to be going down hill as much as possible to help it flow back into the tank. If the oil drain isn't pointed down it might destroy the seals inside the turbo.

@@2vintage it’s a single cylinder engine that doesn’t need any help from a turbo it already runs as efficiently as it can get. And the valves are closed/open opposite of each other so no boost can flow into the intake valves when the exhaust valves are open feeding the turbo, and when the intake valves do open to get boost the exhaust valves close killing exhaust to the turbo. So the turbo does nothing but sound terrible and make the motor work more

Yes if you are "blowing through" the carb, the fuel pressure will need to be increased by the amount of boost you are using and the whole carb needs to be operating at boost pressure. For your next turbo project, you may prefer to start with a fuel-injected engine :)
@BlastWorrior
@BlastWorrior 2 жыл бұрын
but with fuel injection it can be done from anyone no matter if he knows what hes doing, but with a carb there are not many ppl who can make it work he just needs a little bit more mods to get it to work properly. also a lot of the old us car tuners use this method since the mid 80s for old v8 classic cars and it works fine you just need to know what youre doing thats all, i think if he figures that out he will get it to work tho :)

Or better yet, get rid of the T and run out to the turbo from the pressure side of the cut line and return to the other side adding the turbo into the existing loop instead of creating a second loop with very little pressure.

Seems like you’d need a bigger main even than the 170 with that much more air. I think I’m running a 170 with just an aftermarket filter and pipe

Nice work but be careful welding galvanized! My understanding one minute of welding galvanized is equivalent to 10 years of smoking damage to your lungs! I'm enjoying watching! Learning a lot!
