You ever watch Alec Steele? He made a push bike a while back. Took him a month of Sunday’s, half a million quids worth of equipment and still had to get sent a pro gig. Looked like knackers at the end. You’ve got some scrap wood and some tent poles and have produced a bike that wiggins would have a little go on. Nice one brother

One of my biggest mistakes in loading a mountain bike for 4-5 day camping trips was in not distributing the weight properly between front and rear tires. Did the same with my pick-up truck once...too many stones in the back and the front end was bouncing all the way home...with almost no steering. Very scary! My brother & I ended up re-packing the bikes to prevent the front ends from lifting completely off the ground. Lesson learned.

Loved that build! Right up my street. My Yuba Mundo cargo bike is essentially the same design but with extra stiffness and low side loaders...it's massively over engineered but i love it! 13000 miles and counting. I reckon a large part of the poor handling is due to weight behind the rear axle, the Yuba is rated to carry 200 kilos of cargo plus the rider (which is bonkers! I've had over 100 kilos on which was fine) BUT only a maximum of 50 kg behind the rear axle. Also the rear axle is a solid 14mm bolt on and the rear wheel has 48 spokes...like I said really solid!
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 4 жыл бұрын
That's some pretty impressive numbers, id need better steel, precision and an even longer wheelbase to get anywhere near that, can't imagine what it's like trying to get going with 200kg strapped to the back, that's the weight of a motorbike. It's the 2 up front trike that I'm really interested in spending a bit of time on and doing a nice job, classic Dutch tradesman's cargo trike, then I can stick the whole family in it for picnics.
@maryandsam2
@maryandsam2 4 жыл бұрын
@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 re wheelbase the Yuba is 7 ft long nose to tail. So I think you are right. As regards the trike, if you can make it able to lean through corners (an engineering challenge I know) it'll make a huge difference to the ride comfort, rode cambers make trikes really horrible to ride. Just always feels a bit shit. I think the best cargo loaders are the front loader 'long john' type the are lovely to ride and loads of fun ..plus you can get the kids in them!
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 4 жыл бұрын
I managed to get my first ice cream bike to lean into corners by putting the pivot at an angle, unfortunately something wasn't right, I don't know if it was geometry or purely frame flex and it spat me off and summersaulted on a French A road at 30mph after a bit of a tank slapper. The nearest hill to me is 12 miles away so sometimes things don't get tested as much as they should before entering service. Maybe you are right about the long nose bikes, obviously I'd have to find HD 48 spoke wheels somewhere.

I've been looking into bike camping. I have zero experience with it other than knowing cycling and camping but I do like the look of frame bags. (Alpkit have some good examples - expensive but when you buy kit that wont let you down, you buy alpkit :) ). You can drastically reduce the weight of your camping gear for cheap. There's loads of videos on youtube about going ultralight. I did the coast to coast with a carry weight of around 10kgs (inc food & water for a few days). There's no dicking about with it though. If you want a sub 10kg pack weight you have to spend £££. (Only on a few key items, the rest can be sourced cheaply), You could start with a lighter bag - sure it's rugged, but when are you dragging it through gauze bushes while bike camping? ;-)

So the reason I like my particular ex Dutch army bivvy is I can roll it up with a mat and a big 3 season bag inside it, packing up or making camp takes 30sec, Its got wings near the head that fold over and tie and as long as you keep it the right way up in the rain It'll keep everything dry. It looks to me like other bags are designed to be packed up separately both military and commercial stuff. Is it normal to carry everything separately?

@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 4 жыл бұрын
You are quite right, ackerman steering has big weight/complexity/load area penalties. I built an "ice cream bike" with simple cart steering many years ago. It was very unstable at speed, I think this was due to frame flex though so could be remedied with better design and the other big drawback was hitting a bump with a front tyre caused it to slew over in that direction however on smooth surfaces i think it's the least compromised pedal powered 3 wheel set up. If I had more time on my hands id build a mock up with adjustable geometry and find a big hill so I could experiment with pivot placement, castor ect. I put my pivot at a top leaning forward angle so the rear half of the frame leant into the corner and set the axle slightly behind the pivot but my dad pointed out (during our 200 mile trip through France on bikes) that if I had the load c of g over the axle (behind the pivot) any centrifugal forces I generated at speed would want to further increase the steering angle so I'd created a negative stability issue. I scoured the internet for decent info on cart steering geometry but alas it doesn't seem to be something people apart from me are interested in these days.
