Early 90s gaming: NES - Get with the times Genesis - Gaming for mature audiences SNES - You're playing that kiddie toy? (this perception would change in about 2-3 years after the release) Turbografx-16 - You have what? Neo Geo - Wow, your parents must be rich Crazy thing, they are all fun to play, but back then having more than one video game console was pretty rare.

Any ideas or speculation as to why the TG16 wasn't marketed well? I suppose one thing I can see is the whole bunch of accessories to buy, including the one just for couch coop. Did NEC rest on their laurels on their success with the PC Engine and figure if they didn't make a huge footprint in NA that'd be okay?

First home console I ever played was the NES over at my babysitters. First system I ever owned was the SNES. Had a friend who had the Sega Genesis and we'd go to each other's houses to play the systems we didn't own. I have always appreciated the TG16 ever since I bought a TurboDuo when it was released. It had some great titles. Yeah it wasn't a Genesis or SNES killer here in the USA but it had its own charm. I am not sure why they are marketing the CoreGrafx to the European market as I believe they still had the TurboGrafx USA based version in Europe and the UK and they wisely dropped the 16. The CoreGrafx was only sold in Japan, I believe.

I bought the PC Engine, Super and Turbo Grafx back in the day. I was living in Connecticut at the time. I bought it through the very first American buy and sell game shops. The shop was in Old Saybrook, Ct. A ad was ran in a video game magazine. I had a ton of NES games back in '88. The guy said yeah they ran the ad too soon. They ran it a month too early. But he told me to come on down. I brought down my games and got around 5 grand for the lot. He ran the business out of house converted over to a paint store. A couple of months later the paint store was small and his game business was taking it over. He had every system on the planet. He made tons of money from that business. Unfortunately a year or so later his mom was running it. She told me that he owed her money so she took the business. Well she ran it into the ground. She had no clue as what to do. The guy would let you try out games on the many systems he had set up in the front. You had a 5 minute time limit. She stopped that practice and was very mean to customers. So people stopped showing up. You could buy over seas games, systems, toys, etc. It was nice. Too bad the mother did not know anything about the gaming business or how to deal with people. About 6 months after she took over it went out of business. Thanks for the great vid Vic.

The early gen of consoles always had me wishing I owned all of them. I had an NES and wish I also had the SEGA master system. I had the SNES and wish I had a Genesis & TG16. Once the PS1 came out I became a Sony guy and never had any regrets about not getting the Game Cube, Wii or the XBox consoles. I don't have the Switch either and am only mildly interested in, maybe, sometime, getting one, only after a lot of the games I loved on the NES & SNES are available. Right now, virtually none of them are and I prefer the old school games. Heck, I still wish SEGA had brought out a Master System mini before they did the Genesis.

Great review. Strange they didn’t include Keith Courage as that was the pack in game in North America from what I recall. Also, comments about Space Harrier, it ran fairly good on the Master System so not surprised it looks pretty good on Turbografx. Hope to find this system soon!
@RP_Williams4 жыл бұрын
Keith Courage was a manga in Japan too, so they'd have to pay license. The bigger mystery is why no Legendary Axe, as it's a straight up Hudson/Konami property, and one of the system's more popular games...those two and Bonk's Adventure are the only 3 TG16 games i ever played back in early 90s. I've since added a bunch of TG16/PC Engine games to my hacked SNES Classic, and i wish i'd played more of this underrated system back then (i think the biggest drawback was the 'just one controller port'...kids like me didn't have money for both another controller and the Turbo Tap, when a Genesis or SNES already came with two).

The Core Grafx was not originally the European model. It was basically the second model of the PC Engine. The Core Grafx Mini is supposed to be the European version now. I tried to get the TG-16 but unfortunately, they were sold out at Amazon Japan. I wound up purchasing the Core Grafx Mini and I can't wait until it shows up here. After shipping the unit cost me $111.38 USD. That was actually pretty shocking to me as I was ready to pay whatever they asked and expected it to be in the $30-$50 range easy. I will go out on a limb here and agree that those of us that missed the TG-16...this is a great way to catch up. I myself grew up a Sega Genesis/Sega CD and Snes player. I wanted a TG-16 (not before my Genesis) but I could never find one in the wild back then. One thing that always bothered me about the machine (I'm a collector now) was not the different models but the different System Cards. You needed the System 1 card for the early CD games, the System 2.0 for some of the following games, System 3.0 cards for later games, and finally the Arcade Card for fighters...it was nuts. If you had the Turbo Duo you could play most and the Super Grafx did them all but was discontinued after 5 games...it really was kind of confusing.

@@razorramon123 I mean I can say I think the SNES is the best bc every single game is very good on it, but then I think, it has just a tad bit over 20 games, this thing has over 50 even if you count the doubles of PCE/TG-16 versions to a few. So I really like this console, perhaps even more than the SNES mini, dare I say it? Would have loved if the super rare, ultra expensive Magical Chase was on it and many others, but whats there for the most part is pretty solid. But even with that, the CD player was region free, the HuCards (PCE) and Turbochips (TG-16) were not and were region locked as they were slightly different in size. I just wish a few more iconic American releases made it, Legendary Axe 1 and 2, Keith Courage (pack in game), Gate of Thunder (first super CD game), Bloody Wolf. Also some sleepers like Cosmic Fantasy 2, Magical Chase (worth thousands on Ebay),Dragon Slayer, and Exile 1 and 2. People are already in the process of hacking the machine so it can be easily modded to be able to add games. It's extremely likely that for most of the games you'd want to play, there are English patches available. Keep an eye on www.modmyclassic.com and the team over at www.Hakchi.net. I've used Hakchi for NES, SNES, and Genesis mini systems. The great news about the TG16 mini is that it's likely to have significantly more memory due to the base unit including a bunch of CD-based games on it. This means you should be able to fit a lot of stuff on it. The standard unit also has a good amount of input lag as well as the audio not being properly synchronized with the video, which can only be fixed by modding the system to include different emulators. If the time comes and you're interested, I'm happy to help point you in the right direction.

So will the Japanese games be translated for the American release? If not why include the games without it? This mini console is another great idea, but execution is not quite there, was excited to purchase this but the lack of outstanding titles makes me re think this notion.
@hepwo912224 жыл бұрын
Most games can be played without translation, but Snatcher is a big oversight and is unplayable for most people if its just in Japanese.

The PC Engine was never actually officially released all over Europe back in the day. Such a shame. I think it was available in three countries in Europe or something back in the day.

I think in the UK there was a PAL Turbo Grafx but it was so rare or effectively non-existent that imported PC-Engines were much more common.. but still not very common.

No “Devil Crush”?!? :-(. But apart from that, this is a fantastic mini-console.

Hate the fact that they doubled up several games on both pce and turbog when they could've just used one on a system to fill up with different games like bloody wolf or side arms,etc instead of two military madness on turbo and pc.

I'm going to buy one once Hakchi adds support. This device is amazing but that input lag and audio (non-)sync is pretty unforgivable.

Ive played the Mini alot and I can say I never noticed the audio lag and the control lag either
@SeveredLegs2 жыл бұрын
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 I played the thing extensively and have original hardware and there's definitely a difference. But if you're someone who can't notice the obvious audio lag, I wouldn't expect you to notice the input lag either. The only mini system that doesn't have significant audio lag is the SNES classic

I was disappointed in the comics Analogy. Would have put Image comics as the Turbo Graphics equivalent of this 😜

Almost wanna go back in time to enjoy this...hard to enjoy them now that we have been exposed to crazy 60fps graphics.

Um... You do know that the vast majority of games from this era ran at 60 fps?

If it’s not 16bit, why do several titles look better on the PCengine than the Genesis? It has a 16bit graphics processor... so they had every right to call it 16bit. Street Fighter II and Lords of Thunder are two that quickly come to mind that look better on the “8bit” system.

The reason that the PC Engine games are in Japanese is because the American version is not out yet. Why the fuck doesn't Lucas make mention of this?? Shit!
