some of those cubes probably aren't magnetite, but limonite cubes. Its basically decomposed pyrite when you find them in many parts of NC (depending on where you are). Its tricky and you have to look carefully at the crystal habit because limonite cubes will result from the oxidation and hydration of iron rich sulfide minerals like pyrite, but also from hydration of magnetite. So yeah, when these are formed in the rock, only the crystal habit will let you know which mineral it replaced. Lots of good limonite cubes over by the Pittsboro area, just scan the dirt near quartz deposits. Found some nice ones in Boone/Blowing Rock area too, still in the local rock. Heading down NC-321 out of Blowing rock you can find AWESOME pyrite in the local gneiss where they cut the new highway right out of the damn mountain. I love that state for gem and mineral prospecting and lately, been really thinking about trying my hand at gold prospecting using my knowledge of the geologic units in NC and all the old mining districts. But I live 4 states away and its a 6-8 hour drive for me sadly. My state's geology is boring as all hell (unless you absolutely love fern and gastropod fossils... but they get old after a while). Nice video, thanks for the tips, and I'm sure I'll get down that way sooner than later to try my hand at creeking a few spots. Oh, and if you ever wanna go ammy, beryl or corundum hunting, I can put you on a few killer locations! But not putting those honey holes in a public comment section! LOL

I don’t stay far from you maybe little over a hour away. If you want to go back with someone I can bring my gold gear and make a video and hopefully find that gold. You are lucky to be in a urban area and have such good gold around. I am right on the edge of the belt so my local stuff is sporadic.

It might be a drive but well worth the experience. Little pine garnet mine in Marshall North Carolina is a great place to find tons of beautiful garnets. Almost anywhere in Franklin area you can find gems in small creeks and there are mining opportunities like the Sheffield Mine or Mason Mountain. Join some Rockhound pages on Facebook. (North Carolina has a bunch that will turn you on to spots.)

Interesting fact Boylston gold mine which is on federal property now is up Mills River. But something else interesting is I saw it on a 1898 geological map showing gold mines. We’ve had 3 one hundred year Major floods 4 if you include the 1941 flood. I’m thinking there might be new veins not discovered while NC gold rush was in full swing😊

That's amazing how much you were able to get. What county are you in if you don't mind sharing? I'm an upstate SC native from Oconee and am just now getting the time to get dirt in my pan lol. I'd love some pointers if you have any to share... you seem to know the geology of it and how to find the good spots randomly. Equipment really is just maximizing efficiency and only increases yield by MAYBE like 10%
@HighCountryRocks

I do my best to find maps of the geology of potential areas where gold has been discovered. Then I find a creek or branch or stream and look for the natural traps in the waterway. The hardest part is gaining permission. I always try to respect people's property lines and ask permission. You don't want to be found in someone else's land the other way. I just got lucky . I have had countless days of prospecting and found nothing. The more you dig in and research the more you will find.

@HighCountryRocks
@HighCountryRocks 2 жыл бұрын
I would look for some bedrock in the creek. If you can find any cracks in the bedrock that would be a great way to test your creek again. All creeks don't have gold with that being said don't give up on your first attempt . I have found no gold in areas and then a spot that is loaded on the other side of the creek. If you strike out multiple times then j would recommend trying a new spot. Dig deep in the Gold history of North Carolina and you can find plenty of clues on where to check. Good luck !! Stuck with it and it will pay off. Make sure to enjoy the experience and the knowledge you gain.

Gems are something I am interested in but don’t know enough to know what to look for. If you like gems I heard around Hickory there’s good gem mines. We can get some colors and you can teach me something about gems. I heard gold like this is common in your area is that true?
@HighCountryRocks

I mostly slip down the mountain for everything I do. Caldwell, Burke , Lincoln , Catawba. I have found some good color in Hickory. Up in Watauga and Ashe and Avery Mitchell and Yancey I have found nothing more more than a speck. I have heard rumors though. It's easier to find it when it has weathered out of the millions of years.
