Mediterranean tensions start because of Turkey's UNIQUE Sea-Theory according to "islands and island-states don't have sea rights, so it doesn't exist on the sea map, so I as Turkey own all the sea regions around the Greek islands and Cyprus". This is not a dispute between Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. This is an issue of International Law since Cyprus is not the only island-state in the World and Greece is not the only country with islands in the World. The Turkish state must make clear its position about sea rights "only the Greek islands and Cyprus doesn't have sea rights??? OR all the islands and island-states of the World such as Sicily, Malta, Sardinia, Bahrain, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan etc etc It is more than obvious that the Turkish Regime feels powerful and want to grab whatever they can from their smaller neighbours using an expansionist/military policy. Turkey uses blackmails and military threats demand the EastMed pipeline to pass via Turkish soil. This is why they claim sea regions 7 miles away from the Greek islands and 300 miles away from the Turkish shores.. Numerous foreign states and all the Mediterranean states slammed Turkish claims calling them as ridiculous and illegal for sure because they "delete" from the sea map big islands and the island-state of Cyprus. Nothing more, nothing less.

Turkish theory of islands? Have you ever had a good look at the island distributions in the Aegean sea? Many islands that are claimed by Greece are the ones that can be categorized as "islands which are on the wrong side of the sea borders". I do not want to go into history too much, but also islands groups such as Dodecanese islands have been transferred to Greece illegally by the Italians after the WWI. These islands are located much closer to Turkish mainland than to Greece. Worse, some other islands are so much closer to Turkey (such as Lesbos, Samos, Cios), so much so that one can swim from Turkey to these islands and they are visible from Turkey. Islands such as these can not be treated as other islands located on other parts of the world, such as in oceans and much larger seas that Agean where closest mainlands are hundreds of miles away. In such cases, islands can claim territorial and/or economic sea zones extending 200kn away. However, in narrow/small seas like Agean, this can't happen. Indeed, there has been applications to international courts of arbitration, I think around 14 of such applications, by countries in dispute because of similar special situation of the islands, and each of these application have been decided in favor of the mainland country. It was stated these islands are on the wrong side of sea borders and the rights of mainland overrides the right of small islands scattered so close to the mainland. Greeks seems to be living in a dream world and blatantly ignoring real-politik. Instead of sitting with Turkey and try to reach a common ground they keep acting on their own that will only lead to even bigger frustrations for them.
