Turkey or Turkiye! Which is correct?

Turkey or Türkiye, which is correct? The Turkish government have changed the name of their country to Türkiye, did you know and was it a good idea?

the name ingil-tere for example is taken from the latin word Terra (means land): land of english people and in fact it has no other meaning in turkish language. Also Yunanistan comes from the old greek name for the greek tribe ioannis (reading: Yannis) and also no other meaning in turkish, just Land of the Greeks/land of ioannis) .... Almanya stands for the old german tribe of the Allemagnes. And yes: no other meaning. So maybe its okay to make a decision like that. if you think about searching something in the internet about turkey the country, you find a thanksgiving receipt.

In Turkish, we have some problematic country names as well. For example, India means hindistan and hindi means turkey, the bird one. So it means something like "the land of turkeys". That is the same issue with turkey has issued over the years. Another example: egypt means mısır. This word also means corn.

Turkiye is my choice. Like you said it's much more difficult to type Turkiye because the spelling correction doesn't accept it. it changes the spelling of the word which is non-existent, but that will happen in time and I like Turkiye better. God bless Turkiye.

I was taught that proper names do not have translations. If your name is John, it is not Juan in Spanish. I think that translations have come about because people can't pronounce names as they were intended to be. I like Turkiye and since I have heard how it's pronounced, I don't mind transitioning to the new name.

Actually names used to be translated and in some countries people will keep translating your name if there is a similar name in their language. Javier would become Xavier in France. And John would definitely be called Juan by many Spanish people 🙃

I agree. Also, I remember years ago when attending school, England played Turkey in a football match. Back then the Turks did not invest in players like they do now and quite often they played footy only part-time. Anyway, on that day, England beat Turkey 8-0. and I remember the tabloids having a field day with comments like we stuffed the turkey, etc. Silly comments never go down well. Turkiye is a step in the right direction and is fine by me.

Hi Mick, I think change is appropriate. I have been living in the US for four years. Just before the official change, I picked up my daughter from the school and she was crying. Because her friends teased about the name of her home country. We don’t mind as adults, but it affects the elementary school kids who are aware of their homeland.

If our Turkish friends have asked nicely for us to call the country Türkiye, I'm happy to comply! It's not too much to ask and it's for them to say, not us. Imagine if someone wilfully pronounced your name wrong even though you'd explained how they should say/spell it!

I don't think your analogy is correct, as it's not a case of a friend wilfully pronouncing your name wrong any more than them saying Ingilterre for England. It really doesn't bother me them saying Ingilterre. I think friends that get upset about it have too much time on their hands. The sad part is the birds missing name. - Europeans call it turkey as they bought and imported the bird from the Turkish - Levantine merchants of Ottoman Empire. - Turks thought that the bird was originally from India so we call it ''Hindi''. - Indians call it the ''Peru Bird'' as they thought the Portuguese were producing them somewhere around colonial South America and selling it to Indians. - Peruvians of the colonial era were %100 sure that the bird was coming from France and they used to call it Dindan. - The French being experts of Turkology and Turkish language compared to other Europeans, as they've faced Turks 6 times for Crusade, they were able to ask the Turks whats the name of it, and they've got the answer! Dindon! Its actually derives from ''D'Indie'' = meaning ''from India'', so after all they've got it wrong just like the Turks. - The truth is, Europeans actually found the bird being domesticated by the natives of Americas, and they've thought this was the same bird the Turks were trading. But that bird was infact ''Beç Kuşu'' (guineafowl). Turks got it from the Hungarians and after a bit of domestication they started trading it to whole Europe. P.S. Why the Turks mixed up the bird they've got it from Hungarians and domesticated themselves with the bird coming from New World? No one knows the answer. Why on earth a bird that is found in Hungary and domesticated by the Ottomans gets to be called ''Guinea'' fowl in English? Okay, this is where we stop asking questions. Before jumping on to changing country names, these countries should come together and pick a ''cute'' and ''new'' name for that poor bird.

I've thought for many a year that a country should be called whatever it is in its own language. Just like the name given to a person. There are people who change their name to make it easier for others to say, but if we grew up using people's / countries' proper names as given by their own country, it would become second nature. We are able to learn many foreign words without even thinking about it....brand names, companies, town/city names, etc, etc, so if we can do that, why not country and people's names?😊

As a principle, I will always call you what you prefer to be called. Especially when your alt name has a negative connotation, causes confusion even in simple Google searches, and you're highly sensitive to honor / dignity (Turks are an honor/dignity-based society). So yeah, Türkiye instead of Turkey in this particular case is justified.

In Arabic 'Musser' also means Egypt, 'Almanya' for Germany & Greece is 'Yunan' without the 'istan'. Actually 6% of modern Turkish words have Arabic roots, as well as 5% of Turkish words are of French origins, eventhough non of the 2 languages are remotely related to modern Turkish. Turkish as we know it is closely related to Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, & Kazakh. I'm Lebanese, grandma has Turkish origins, (Hurshid family). Aren't I lucky? I live in Israel, and in Turkish, it's 'Israel.' (Okay, the 's' comes out sounding more like a 'z,' but it's close...) I'm inclined to give the Turks some slack and call their country Turkiye if it will help their national pride in this difficult time for them. I think they're wonderful people and I have always felt like an honoured guest when in their country, so I'm happy to try to remember to call it Turkiye! (Even though I can't seem to figure out how to get it on my computer, I'm happy to correctly pronounce the umlaut-u in the front of my mouth, as it would be in Turkish.) I have met unpleasant situations a few times when I said that where I am from. It seems to me that... Every country should be referred to by its original name in every other language. Japan must end, Nippon must begin. Georgia must end. Sakartveli must begin. India must end, Bharat must begin. For all countries. Germany must end, Doychland must begin. Wihtout any exceptions. However, pronunciation and alphabet differences can be tolerated. I can appreciate that a country wants to be known as a particular name. However, when one needs to translate a foreign language to one's native language then there will be differences of spelling and pronunciation and possibly entirely different terms in that native language. Good examples would be those that Mick noted about England, Greece, Germany, etc. in Turkish. So it only makes sense that there would be different words, spellings and pronunciations of a country's name in different languages. If I am understanding the new pronunciation of Turkey, it would be spelled Turkeeyea in English without the accent over the letter U since English does not have that letter in its alphabet. By the way, does the UN refer to Germany as Deutschland when translating from one language to another? I don't know the answer, just wondering out loud. 😮‍💨

Mick we love you, but you know very well that all the country names are in English as it is the common language and people have accepted it. In terms of spell check it is not hard to correct it manually (such small details). Anyhow the problem with the young these days can't even spell properly because "spell check" does it for them.

I meet with new people everyday because of my job and when they ask me where I am from and they respond that they just finished their turkey sandwich which is not putting a smile on my face!!! Or another example just happened a couple months ago, one of person asked me the same question and he laughed loudly and turned around to his wife and told her that I was from "ggobble gobble " . He couldn't make himself stop until I refused to take their house pictures. (I'm a real estate photographer) Yes please call us "Turkiye '' not turkey. That way we can eliminate those types of rude people without getting in the conversation. I know you are not one of them and I really appreciated all the beautiful videos you have done for my country but try to look at the situation from the other perspective please. There is a reason why they had to go that way! I dont think so we can change everyone's language and force them to call their animal something else.I think the best and polite way was asking people to call our country's name "Turkiye" was a much nicer and fair way for everyone!

Quite s few years ago a guide on an excursiom called Turkey Turkiye...my wife picked up on it and we have called it that ever since.....its still a fantastic place with some great people whstt ever you call it....

It would be interesting to know how a Brit with no knowledge of Turkish (or any other language come to that) would pronounce Turkiye if they were reading it off a piece of paper. Somehow I think it would be completely different than anyone with a knowledge of Turkish phonetics or syllable formats would expect it to be.

Is any one forgetting that Through time names in Turkey have changed for one reason or another since roman/greek times. The great city was called Constantinople by the entire wider world until the 20th century. Although the Ottomans had unofficially called it Istanbul for years, the official name change took place in 1930 after the establishment of the modern Turkish Republic.

The name İstanbul was in use from the 10th century onwards. Way before Ottomans. It derives its name from the Greek “eis ten polin” which means “in the city.” And it was already in use by its people. And its first name was Bazantion/Byzantion/Byzantium given by Greeks before Romans change it, how about that?! So actually Istanbul comes from its original roots and what its people called the city

If I recall correctly the reason why Türkiye was called Turkey all along was (I have heard during a conversation, which I havent been able to find any concrete evidence about it. ) due to British ( No offense intended ! ) mocking the name of the country which was newly established after the 1st world war and was trying to gain independence against Allied forces which invaded the country at the time. But it might be because it is easier to say it that time as well. I believe it is a mixture of both since British are sarcastic people :). Anyways Türkiye doesnt mean a species of any kind of bird in any other language. But like someone wrote down below, it creates problems with young or immature people mostly. I have encountered some pretty bad jokes during my life about this from English speaking nations. People who are not native English speakers doesnt comprehend the name in that way since the name in their language doesnt mean a bird. If somebody can find why British people decided to call Türkiye as Turkey in the first place that would be great!

It's a very interesting and useful discussion, but how then should Russian name the country if we use Cyrillic alphabet?! Do we need to adapt it and write "Тюркие" (absolutely not suitable for Russian grammar) or can we still call it "Турция" (native Russian word which can easily change its endings in sentences according to grammar rules)? In my opinion, it will be a gradual transfer from one to the other. People who are used to calling it Turkey will probably continue to call it so. As younger generations of English speakers become educated in schools with the new version and correct pronunciation it will become the norm.

I think you are making mistake with your logic. English as your language and English as a global language ( in this case English as a political global language) doesn't have to be owned by English people. You can continue to call Turkiye as Turkey as a English person if that makes it easier for you. Also, I don't think any other country other than England used to call Turkiye as Turkey. Perhaps again in political areas in global stage it was written Turkey on papers for a few centuries in the past but among the ordinary people it was definitely not Turkey.

It's because Turkish government and people don't like to be associated and confused with a native american bird for no logical reason. But we Turks have our own dilemmas, too. We call Portugal as Portekiz (from Portuguese) and we call the orange fruit as portakal (which Ottomans first imported from Portugal and called as the apple of portugal or "portagal elması"). We call Egypt Mısır, and we also call the maize/corn as "mısır". We call india as hindistan and perhaps it's quite accurate, however we call spice as "baharat" which is India's real name (bharat). As for China, I don't want to mention further, it's too scary just check the difference between Çin and Cin in Turkish... The problem with English spelling of Turkey is that the English language confusion is much more widespread in terms of the country's image. while Turkish language confusion is not that important.

@Mick I think you're missing the point. The whole point of the name change is because England decided to name Turkiye after a bird "Turkey", which vaguely sounds like "Turkiye". That's a completely different thing to England hypothetically asking Turkiye to change "Ingiltere" to "England". A better comparison would be to ponder how England would react if Turkiye called England something like "Egg Land".

The suffix "-iye" has no Turkic roots, which means that if a word in Turkish finishes with "-iye", it's a loan word either from Arabic ("-iyya") or from European languages such as Latin ("-ia"), Italian ("-ia"), French ("-ie"), etc. The word "Türkiye" would have been "Türkili"/"Türkeli" if it had a Turkic root. Instead, it's "Türkiye", which is a loan word. Some say it's a loan word from Arabic, because Arabs called the Mamluk Sultanate as "Turkiyya". Others say it's a loan word from French ("Turquie") or Italian ("Turchia"). Since Arabs used this word for a different geographical area, I tend to eliminate that option. It entered into circulation after the French Revolution, because the Turkish nationalism, like all other nationalisms, found its source in the French Revolution.
