Great video. I'll tell you my method for turkey tail alcohol extraction. I clean the mushrooms, trim where attached to the log, pop into a high speed blender with some chicken stock and a shot of white wine or sherry. Blend for about a minute, toss in a pot and thicken at a slow boil. Add some heavy cream and whatever else you want and you'll have the best cream of mushroom soup ever. I know they are medicinal but they work great blended into soup. Their flavor is very similar to oyster mushrooms- mild and pleasant- not woody or fibrous at all. You don't need to blend 100%. The bits that don't get blended become soft. I collect a bunch in July- clean, dry and toss in the pantry. I pull out whenever I want a quick bowl of great tasting soup.
@WildMeatLetsEat6 жыл бұрын
Keith - Very cool... I've always utilized this mushroom in tincture. You mentioned the taste is a little like oysters... Does it have that almond flavor? Thanks
@keith45966 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about the oysters having a slight almond taste and I wouldn't say the turkey tail has that same flavor- just very mild. The first time I decided to try turkey tail was when I felt a cold coming on. I didn't want to wait for the tincture so I just threw in the blender with some chicken stock, blended and cooked. I remember thinking it was going to be horribly bitter and probably chalky like an old chicken of the woods. But after I drank some, all I could think was,"wow this is pretty good!". So now it's my go to for a quick mushroom stock or soup.

For those that don't want to use alcohol to make a tincture, you can make a turkey tail extract using raw ACV with the mother. Doesn't last as long as an alcohol tincture, but it is much healthier for you and cheaper to make.

Right on!!! ACV is always a good thing... good idea. Thanks for watching and sharing!! Happy hunting to ya.
@theforestgardener40114 жыл бұрын
Great video, I like how you crushed it up before hand. I put my mushrooms in whole but will now go back and blend them up! Then only way you could improve on this recipe is after the alcohol extract is done, simmering the leftover crushed mushroom in hot water for a few hours, about the same volume of water than the alcohol. Then you can blend the water into the alcohol making a double extract. It also ensures you are keeping the final tincture about 30% alcohol which maximizes shelf life. Too high of alcohol can degrade the medicinal compounds.
@WildMeatLetsEat4 жыл бұрын
Yes a dual extraction is best... thanks for the tip... 30% alcohol increases shelf life, I was not aware. I've done dual extraction many times and did not realize I was increasing the shelf life. Thanks again for the info and thanks for watching! Happy hunting to ya!

Thanks! If you can get vodka... 40% alcohol should work. I realize that's only 80 proof however you could let the mushrooms marinate longer... let's say 8 to 10 weeks before you strain. Technically, you can harvest the small ones. Yeah... when you soak them in water, especially warm water... you'll pull out the polysaccharides. Soaking them that long, you basically made a weak tea/decoction. what would happen if you use a stronger alcohol like Everclear which is 95%? is some of the chemicals extracted by the water in your 50% alcohol?
@WildMeatLetsEat2 жыл бұрын
The higher the proof the faster the extraction. I'm using moonshine only... no water. Technically the water in a good vodka will extract some but not all of polysaccharide while the alcohol is extracting... everclear will work just fine. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!!

That was a nice video but at the end you forgot to tell how to use it one or two drops per day or what
@WildMeatLetsEat Жыл бұрын
Yes... 6ml under the tongue, once in the morning or twice a day, morning and night, depending on how I feel. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!

Excellent video. I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I went hunting this weekend. Most of the Turkey Tail I found were older and past their prime, but I did find a lot of nice purple gilled laccaria and a sack ful of stump puffballs.

Thank you! That's awesome. It's always a good day when you can get out in the woods! Hopefully you'll find some fresh ones soon.

Hi...I read somewhere that alcohol kills the enzymes of the mushroom. What do you know about this?

What time of the year do you collect the mushroom?
@WildMeatLetsEat Жыл бұрын
This mushroom can be found almost year round... not so much in January and February. It seems to be most prevalent in the spring. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Has anyone ever had mold problems on their Turkey tails? Not sure if it’s dirt or mold but about a third of the ones I harvest look pretty suspect, should I scrape it off or just throw them out?
@WildMeatLetsEat3 жыл бұрын
Green? If its green... throw it out. You can find cleaner specimens. Mold is not your friend. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!!

Just an FYI you can flavor the alcohol tincture with pg candy flavoring or flavors used in marijuana dab manufacturing to make a strawberry tincture or whatever flavor you like. Takes the edge off

Very Cool!! I'll have to try that... Thanks for sharing.

can you do this with lyons mane?

Absolutely!!! Reshi too. However I would use a dehydrator to dry them instead of the oven.

wonder if u could speed up the extraction process a little by having it on magnetic stirrer ?
@WildMeatLetsEat5 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think there's know doubt it would blend it faster but it takes time for the alcohol to extract all the goodness out. So at a glance... I would say probably not but it's an interesting idea. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!!

So do u add water to it? Or do a double boil? Or just do this and use the alcohol
@WildMeatLetsEat3 жыл бұрын

Hi, love your videos. Have you ever tried putting the tincture into a double boiler and burning off the alcohol? What would be left, I believe, would be the pure oils. I do that with cannabis for the thc and cbd for cancer treatment. Thanks.
@WildMeatLetsEat5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No I've never tried it... it would be interesting to see if it worked. If you try it please let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching and happy hunting to ya!!!
@bryanmcleod93462 жыл бұрын
When you use the double boiler and reduce cannabis flower with Ever Clear, you are making Rick Simpson Oil, or RSO! Let it get to about 160 degrees, but not much more, and dont reduce it too much, as it will reduce to a heavy tarr, But It has to get above 155 to release the wonderful Oils though. Mix the reduced portion about 1 part RSO with about 4 parts Coconut Oil, and store in the brown dripper bottles. It greatly reduces my back pain (especially helpful to get to sleep), when my wife rubbs it on my lumbar, and provides several hours of Relief! Be Very Careful if added to coffee, and Do Not Drive or operate Machinery, as you Will need to go to bed if you use a big drop!! And if you are subject to drug test, you will Fail. This is why Big Pharma lobbies CONNgress to keep it, and Many other homeopathic Natural medical remedies illegal. Be Careful until you learn the amount that provides the Relief you need. May God Bless you with the Benefits of the plants he Created, for our short life in this realm. Peace!!
