Vultures are part of nature's "clean-up crew," recycling life that was lost, preventing the spread of disease. Virtually all bacteria are killed after passing through their digestive systems. Vultures are beneficial to the environment; they eliminate disease.
Interesting facts about Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura):
~ They can eat a rotten, diseased carcass and not get sick or die. The birds' droppings are also disease free.
~ Their poop is actually a sanitizer! They poop/pee on their legs to sanitize them.
~ They don't build nests; they lay eggs on the ground, hidden under cover, in rock crevices or hollow trees.
~ They have no synrix (a bird's voice box) and are silent except for hissing and grunting.
~ They often stand with their wings spread apart to dry their wings, warm their body, and bake off bacteria.
~ They may vomit, if you disturb them. This reduces their weight (for easy flight) and frightens potential predators.
~ They use their sense of smell to locate dead animals (in addition to vision) from up to a 1-2 miles away.
