So I actually have a lot to add to this conversation. During the time when Plagued Moth was selling access to his uncensored reactions of gore videos I was a member of his Patreon and discord. I was an overly edgy 17 year old and was almost completely desensitized of any gore and violence. I was in a really bad place from a mental health standpoint at the time, and ended up attempting to take my life which got me institutionalized In a psych ward for a little more than a month where I was kept on suicide watch. I do want to say that my mental health problems were not Plagued Moths fault (they stem from past trauma), but they absolutely were exacerbated by his content and the community he had grown on his discord. At this point I had become completely desensitized to almost all violence and still some of the videos that I saw because of Moth were legitimately the worst things I have ever seen in my entire life and I will never be able to forget them. One particular video I ended up watching because of Plagued Moth was a video named Amber Alert that I’m not joking when I say that legitimately has given me PTSD which was diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist. I don’t want to go to far into specifics because they get darker then you could imagine but from Plagued Moth’s Patreon and discord you had access to view videos of compilations of dead children from the war in the Middle East, suicides, shootings, extreme and graphic murders and one video that even I could not bring myself to watch called Old number 7, which depicted the real and drawn out torture and sexual abuse of a dog, before the dog is killed on screen. I have personally worked over a lot of what I saw in Plagued Moths community in therapy and am at a stable point mental health wise. But the thing that bothers me is that I know that I’m definitely not the only one with a story like this who was young, liked horror and got pulled into a community by Plagued Moth that was so dark and a depraved that your mental health is almost guarantied to take a nose dive. I know this for a fact because I met so many other people like me in his discord. To anyone who has spent even a little time on his time on his discord it is extreemly obvious that his content overwhelmingly attracts underage people and people struggling with mental health problems, and the content itself can be beyond damaging.

I’m glad you didn’t watch Old Number 7. Even Moth is desensitized to that, which makes me wonder about his mental state. That one, and a few others I’ve heard about stick with me and I haven’t even watched them. I refuse to. I used to watch the occasional messed up video 20 years ago in the early days of the internet since I’m now almost 40, and even knowing these things exist can really mess with your head and get you depressed about the human race as a whole. Like doing those things to puppies or dogs who we don’t deserve in the first place because some sick psycho in a mask gets off on it (or more likely knows others do and has no empathy for a defenseless animal, so they make videos to sell because they’re probably from a shi** third world country). This is a controversial opinion, but I personally find death/gore videos provide a lot of insight to my understanding of the world - although I definitely have specific lines I won’t cross. i used to be a really big fan and defender of plagued moth during my senior year of high school, which is when i found his channel. admittedly, i was in an extremely rough patch in my life during that time and seeing a youtuber like this gave me an odd sense of comfort. im 21 now and coming up on my 4th year of being out of school, and while that rough patch inevitably got worse due to adult struggles as opposed to high school struggles, i realized just how terrible moth really is. his content is disgusting and its insane to me how at 17/18 i just for whatever reason didn't clock it. that is, unfortunately, a lot of his fanbase. they're mostly mentally ill teenagers who find his content to be comforting. and that is what's concerning to me.

I was exposed to gore and obsessed with it when I was 17-18. I couldn’t stop looking at it and after a while it wasn’t just “oh I’m such an edgy teen” it became more like “i can’t stop these horrible intrusive thoughts and I’m scared of myself”. After a while and I got so paranoid/scared of death that I couldn’t stop imagining myself in horrific positions aswell as my family. I became suicidal and had to be hospitalised for 3 weeks. During this time I was constantly angry/anxious/paranoid and became an insomniac. I honestly didn’t tie these things together until it was too late. It starts as kids wanting to be different/edgy or just morbidly curious people. I was the latter and it went WAY too far. Some teens just have a morbid curiosity that goes way too far. I’m a lot better now. I still have seemingly permanent insomnia and anxiety but medication has helped a lot.

Because the video of death is real and not something out of a movie but real on your screen your brain sends mixed signals of adrenaline. It can’t comprehend whether or not you’re in actual danger because real danger is happening on the screen but you’re not there if that makes any sense? This adrenaline can become addictive and create a high similar to the sensation of going down a roller coaster or a thrill ride. but ultimately is harmful to the psych I also learnt watching this stuff can be a form of self-harm. Instead of psychical self-harm it’s emotional. Some may even use this strategy as a way to feel ‘alive’ when their depression makes them feel incredibly numb It’s fascinating
