Demonstration of an old technique for turning a bowl on a lathe without a 3 or 4 jaw chuck. This technique uses a lathe faceplate and a homemade chucking scraper.
Instructions on how to make a chucking scraper.

Thankyou for posting this. I have had the same trouble finding info about this. I have a similar tube type lathe as yours. I payed very little for it and did not want to pay more for equipment for it than I payed for the lathe. Great job presenting.

Thank you, so very much, for this video! I have an old lathe. It's my first one. It has a faceplate, live centres, but no chuck. So the question has been about how to complete a bowl without a chuck. Thank you for showing us! Such a relief to see someone doing the otherwise nearly impossible task! When just turning between centres, the whole hollowing of the bowl starts to get a bit fraught. What with trying to forget the special needs of the financially less secure, in terms of turning equipment, it gets harder leaning in, to try to cut through the central mass, when you have to leave a post in the way, so the bowl starts on the lathe.

I used to use a faceplate attached to a scrap piece of plywood. Take a couple sheets of newspaper soak them in yellow glue and clamp your bowl stock to the plywood. You can turn the entire Bowl and when you're finished the newspaper allows you to break the joint between the plywood and the bowl without damaging the bowl itself.

I know this is an older video but thanks for sharing this. I use a shopsmith and don't have a chuck yet. I have turned a platter and a bowl by using a hot glue gun instead of ca glue. It takes a little finesse to get it off without having too much tearout. It will sand out easily though. Thanks again and have a great day!

Screw your face paint through a piece of plywood. Use a couple of sheets of newspaper painted with yellow glue, clamp your bowl to the newspaper and plywood. You can go ahead and do an entire finish turning except for the foot of the Bowl. When it's time to separate the two the newspaper will break off and not damage the bottom of the bowl. It's the way the old timers used to do it all the time. Forget CA glues and hot melt glue. They're all the rage because everybody's using them on KZbin but honestly you can't be yellow Carpenters glue and patience. Happy turning

@@paddlefaster I agree that PVA glues will form a stronger bond, and I like your idea of using newspaper. I imagine the PVA will create a very strong bond between the cellulose in the wood and paper layers. I will definitely try this technique next time I try and turn a larger bowl. Is there some sort of jig you created to ensure you are keeping the bowl centered when you mount the bottom to the plywood/paper and faceplate? Or are you making the mortise and tenon, but using the paper and woodglue combo to mount the bowl? I think CA works well for smaller bowls, and a quick cure time is really handy if I want to turn a bunch of bowls in one afternoon. Time is at a premium for a lot of us

@@accesswoodworx you can drill a small shallow hole in the center of your workpiece and in the scrap block of wood በall at the same time፣ layer a few sheets of newspaper with glue and put a 4p finish nail through both holes to line it up.

@@accesswoodworx CA glue is brittle. It's probably fine for small bowls but you're pushing your luck if you're making bigger turnings. I just heard an absolute Horror Story of a guy doing a demonstration at Woodcraft Supply getting hit in the chin with a bowl after the glue joint let go. Shattered his jaw knocked all his teeth out and gave him permanent brain damage. Personally not worth the risk for me I would rather go with the PVA and a half days clamp time. You just have to think ahead.

Gopd tip.. I bought my first lathe last year. Befor i had chisels then got a shock when i saw the price of a decent set of steel. An then chucks are almost as much as my lathe cost so yeah this trick my come in handy for me.. Thanks for sharing, thumbs up from Ireland 👍🏼🍀

Thanks. I have also made several gouges from O1 tool steel. Nothing fancy like roughing gouge, but different styles of scrapers and parting tools are easy to make with flat stock and a grinder. Plus, I get to practice making handles.

Thx u. I have a really old early 1900s lathe. The spindle is about 3/4" or 1/2" so I can't get a chuck for a bowl cuz I think the ones nor days are for a 1" spindle. All i have is a Jacob's chuck and a face plate and spur and live center. So I really appreciate this video. Now I know I can do more with my lathe then I thought. :)

They still sell lathe parts for the 3/4" diameter 16 threads per inch lathes. Most stuff is for 1", but I haven't had issues ordering the 3/4" stuff, at least in the U.S.

Great video......I have the same lathe but no jaw chuck and living here in Venezuela cannot find one to purchase. Do you know where I can order one (3/4" X 16tpi) from there in the states? Thanks and happy turning. Saludos.

I usually look at Amazon.com, Woodcraft.com, or Rockler.com for woodworking items. I have considered buying a chuck, but they just cost to much compared to how often I'd use it. I know you can get a threaded adapter to make a 1" 8 tpi diameter chuck fit on a 3/4" 16 tpi lathe.

Titebond 2 for the blank glue up. I have a 2P-10 cyanoacrylate kit in my shop, just to have a Varity of thicknesses. I probably used the medium on this.

Excellent video! I have the same lathe, do you know where i could buy a small faceplate for it? I have a 10" one and would like a smaller one too but i dont know how to figure out the thread pattern

Yes, 3/4"-16 thread. The face places I have are: www.accesswoodworx.com/threeinchfaceplate www.accesswoodworx.com/fourinchfaceplate If you haven't already, I'd also suggest getting a live center to replace the original one that doesn't spin. Any live center with a number 1 Morris taper will fit that craftsman lathe.
