We live in the Sonoran Desert, Tucson, Arizona area. My wife said she had gotten away with using eucalyptus leaves in the compost before she read/heard the leaves were not recommended. The winter vegetables, kale, swiss chard, lettuce and snow peas did well with the eucalyptus in the compost, but warm-weather crops like cucumbers and melons did not. She also uses pine needles with her blackberries and other acid-soil-loving crops. Our soil here is very alkaline, and the acidic pine needles help balance the soil it seems.

Eucalyptus leaves can be hot composted but the oils in the leaves are toxic and repel worms so your compost may not be as rich with organic matter when it’s finished. Pine needles can also be hot composted but the wax that coats the leaves makes them take forever to breakdown. These reasons are why pine and eucalyptus leaves 🍂 are not the “best” choices for adding to a hot compost pile. Pine needles, being acidic, would make a nice mulch for acidic loving plants though! I believe those are pin or willow oak leaves you were raking up with the small leaves.
