Good job explaining and showing why and how chucks should be used, especially helpful was the explanation regarding contact points of the jaws to wood surface when expanded or contracted too much, and what the hazards are of poor or minimal contact. I enjoyed your vid.

Right on, Billy! I’ve gotten by with mortises as shallow as 1/16th inch before with about as much outside meat as the diameter of the mortise. Great info in this vid 👍

Thanks, David. I have as well, but you have to know the wood. And as seen with that failed mortise in the oak, that doesn't always help. Billy

Thanks for sharing Billy. I never really looked at which to use other than if there was a crack in the wood pre existing. You have given me a great idea for a video though, by using my knowledge from my professional life and sharing it with my turning friends! Tree biology and biomechanics 😉. Thanks again!

Very informative. Always good to revisit principles of how things are suppose to work as you do forget. Does a tendon have better holding power than a mortise? Or they equal? In side grain wood.
@TheMessyStudio
@TheMessyStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Jon, in hard dense woods, I use both with equal success. In softer woods, I find a mortise works better as long as I leave a wide shoulder on the piece. Billy

I just got a lathe and having to get some missing parts. I bought the Supernova 2 Chuck Kit with Pro-Tek 2" Jaw Set. I hadn’t thought about the points of contact- so I’ll aim to have the jaws set for the perfect circle shape! I have a lot of Ashe Juniper in my area of San Marcos. That’s how I found your channel, searching for turning Ashe Juniper. Thanks.
