Box five is that casual friend I stop by to see on the way to box (my favorite) five. Great lesson Troy, I always take something away from your posts. Thanks.

So busy making my comment, but now I've actually watched your examples, it's as if you're doing some of that same stuff, but much better sounding than me!

Thanks Troy - I’ll be studying this over the next few days I often use box 5 to add some minor flavour when using box 1 for a major pentatonic so I don’t have to shift my hand. But I always found it a bit limited mainly playing riffs on the G and D strings and not really using any bends. But your lesson has just opened up a whole load of new possibilities. Nice!

I , for one, have been fascinated by box five for about fifty years since I stumbled onto these boxes while noodling at home one afternoon. I knew no scales or anything , but in doing a lick in two different octaves, I figured it was the same thing, but a different shape , and that after five of these"shapes" ( which is what I called them ), had played out, they repeated up the neck. I'd never heard the term " pentatonic" or anything else, but I knew a lot of chords, and was able to see that ( a couple of weeks later) , if you shifted the same shape down a few frets it still worked over chords , but sounded" majory". Then, of course , I saw the chord shapes inside the shifted two octave pentatonic modes, and I was off,... noodling for three years before finally working out actual major scales . To this day, I think more of chords than of scales when navigating, and something about that fifth box is so symetrical, that I've always dug licks out of it, especially by filling in the middle note in the shape on the top two strings, and skipping from the upper note on the third string to the upper note on the first string, and running back down the shape, often including those three chromatic bits on the top two strings.🎸

@troydownwardmusic I noticed some time ago that I find it more difficult to visualixe the fretboard when dealing in non-guitarish keys, primarily the flat keys. So I started practicing significantly in the various scales starting on Bb. That'll give Db major - only one flat away from the weirdo Gb major - a visualization workout when working with Bb minor and related pentatonic boxes. The fret markers mess with your head in those flat keys after you've internalized the # guitar keys.

Totally agree! Some keys seem to be difficult to visualise on the fretboard.
