Hi Josh, love your vids! Pretty much 100% of my knowledge of video shooting came from you hahah, been a long time photographer but recently getting more and more into video since owning the R7, I finally have a good hybrid so I figured I might as well get into video too. Figured I should at least give you the appreciation you deserve as I went from total rookie to getting by for small projects in no time thanks to you, small tip is the least I can do. I was so curious why your vids were so damn good but you had so little subscribers, and just saw you actually have a main channel for farming stuff, that's awesome man! It's great that you're also sharing your knowledge and skills and passing them down to others here in such a difestible format and top notch production quality. Your vids are simply the best tutorials and guides for video for the R7 on YT, I mean that! Btw, I've been thinking of buying the 16-35 based on how well the combo did here and since I already own the speedbooster. A great used offer popped up in my area for the mk ii, are you familiar with differences between the mk iii? If it's damn near close the mk iii I won't think twice, but I just don't wanna feel held back and need to upgrade to the iii down the line. I own the sigma 18-35 already, but I figured this lens with the speedbooster glued to it pretty much all the time would make a nice addition as an 11-25 f2 and wouldn't be too redundant. Also, if I ever go FF I'll have those focals covered already. Any thoughts? Thanks again, cheers!

Thank you for the support and the kind words. I would recommend the 16-35 2.8 III over the II. The III is a lot better of a lens optically. In terms of the 18-35, I wouldnt necessarily invest in the 16-35 if the 18-35 is working for you. Another nice thing about the 18-35 is the ability to use a VND adapter too. Lots of options!

4:25 actually I think you CAN use sigma 18-35 F1.8 with the speedbooster because that lens while being an APSC lens, has a image circle big enough to cover a fullframe sensor from around 20mm( if I remember correctly), I've tested it out with my Sony A7iii and EF mount film cameras. even at 18mm the image circle still covers like 80% of the frame. So with the roughly 1.14 crop factor your speedbooster provides, you might just cancel out the vignette at 18mm !!

The big photography question, of course, is how do you keep your cat from blocking the monitor when you're trying to learn stuff from a KZbin video? Cats have an extremely high Block Factor that dramatically reduces the useful resolution of even a high-quality monitor. A little more seriously, I got some interesting info from this video (the parts that I could see) and since I'm thinking about getting an R7, it's timely info too. Thanks!

Quick technical info: A speedbooster fundamentally changes the properties of your lens. You're basically adding more glass to the back of it. It does both decrease the focal length of your lens and the back pupil diameter of your lens. So your 100mm F/2 full frame lens now becomes a 71mm F/1.4 apsc lens. It does change the lens, not the camera. Your explanation is basically in reverse. Your camera is still apsc. But you're making your apsc sized sensor to capture more of the frame of your lens therefore increasing the amount of light it gets. In bad light, a full frame camera like R5 will still work better because R5 can handle ISO 40000 while R7 can hardly handle 10000 iso. I have the R7 not the R5. There are a lot more factors into this like pixel density. For example R7 would need to have a 85 megapixel sensor if it was scaled up to a full frame. R5 has half the resolution of that, plus 2.56 times more surface area that gathers light so each pixel is almost twice as bigger hence less noise at the same iso level and exposure, plus the more surface area gathering more light hence less noise at the same iso level and exposure. With the speedbooster however, you can only get as far as gather twice as light and use lower iso to reduce noise by half. It does serve it's purpose but it's not gonna be as good as a full frame in terms of light gathering and iso performance still. Also the fov will be similar and one benefit would be the file size. Since you're not using a higher iso like you could on a full frame body but that's it. A speedbooster is basically a teleconverter in reverse. And there are good examples of lens makers just gluing a teleconverter at the back of the lens they already have. Such an example would be a Canon RF 600mm F/4 vs RF 1200 F/8, even Canon says they are basically the same lens however the 1200mm has a special teleconverter glass group at the back of that lens. The front 600mm portion is basically the same.

Waiting for my Metabones to arrive. Very interested to see for myself. On the R7, your 500mm F4 becomes a FF 550mm equivalent with the light gathering ability of an F2.8 and the apparent DOF of F4 . It is like having a second camera body. BTW, a speedbooster reduces focal length. F stop is a function of lens area and focal length. So the F stop goes up one stop for real. A CF camera gives you a one stop increase look in terms of DOF. The speedbooster brings it back one. Thank you for your great explanation

Hey Josh. I just wanted to thank you for this video. I found it a few months ago while i was still waiting for my r7 and was thinking about future options in terms of lenses. I now own the r7 with the viltrox speedbooster (happy i still got one seeing how canon restricts third party manufacturers) and a canon rf 24-70 II L and i just love the combo. One thing that i have noticed is that most of the time my adapter doesnt calculate the new focal lenght and aperture. Re attaching the lens and adapter usually fixes that, but still more often than not it does not do the math. Doesnt affect anything else but still annoying.

Got my day-1 R7, pass-through adapter, and speed booster adapter. Really opens up the possibilities with full-frame EF glass. It's like having 2 lenses in 1. More reach with the regular adapter and more FF-like with the speed booster. The speed booster works with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. There will be correctable vignetting zoomed in at ~24mm or more (requires cropping at wider FOVs), but it allows you to shoot video in 4k crop mode @ 60 fps without losing as much of the FOV (1.81x0.71=1.285) or resorting to line-skipping mode.

Perfect presentation in terms of all the particulars. This has nothing to do with speed boosters but I'm a Nikon shooter and am considering the R7 for wildlife because I want to get the mirrorless advantages. I currently use the D500 with a Nikkor 200-500 lens. The Z9 is too dang expensive and the R7 has most of the advantages. It's not an apple-to-apple comparison but the R7 would be a great alternative considering the costs. Again, great informative video. By the way, I'm sticking with my old tank, the Nikon D700 (which I love) for full frame.

@Josh_Sattin2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, the speedbooster will give you an extra stop of light, letting you lower your ISO by one stop. You will lose most of the extra reach though that you would normally be getting with your R7's APSC sensor.
@johnrus76612 жыл бұрын
There is no free lunch, you will gain light with the equal loss of focal length. A 600mm f/4 on a 1.6 body will give you 960mm f/6.3. A 600mm f/4 on a FF is a 600mm f/4. A 600mm f/4 on a 1.6 crop body and a speed booster will give you a 614mm f/4. The conversation factor is pretty close with the speed booster but still approximate. 14mm is hardly noticeable at this focal length. Think of it like a 600mm f/4. But with more optical degradation and a loss in T-Stop. The transmitted light. So much better to get a FF if you want a 600mm f/4 focal length and aperture. You get the most of your glass that way. If you want more focal length, an extender or 1.6 crop body will do the trick.
@Mr48374837 Жыл бұрын
@@johnrus7661 hi John,?I’m very curious and I believe I understood you clearly that my R7 on a EF 800mm F5.6 is actually not F5.6 due to my crop body? I have never used a FF body so my crop body on EF glasses probably not giving me the said Fstop on the lens.
@johnrus7661 Жыл бұрын
@@Mr48374837 Your EF 800mm f/5.6 is gonna be the equivalent to a 1280mm f/9 DOF and focal length. But of course your aperture is still gonna have a brightness f/5.6 but over a smaller area. Due to the smaller sensor you will also loose about 1 1/3rd stops of noise performance compared the equivalent FF. So in the end you can use a smaller sensor gain focal length, gain DOF but lose noise performance. Compared that to using a FF with an extender to increase focal length, increase DOF but loose ligh, but with the extra noise performance you can bump up the ISO. You end up in the same place just going about it two different ways. In optics there is no free lunch. Only way to improve this ratio of reach to noise performance and IQ is better sensor tech or a bigger lens. But you got the very best lens for sharpness and overall reach. It's a dream lens and enjoy it!

The Viltrox EF-R3 has some lens compatibility issues. For instance when I tried the Rokinon Cine T1.5 EF lenses, they just failed to work. The R7 would not allow you to press the shutter button. IBIS also seemed to be switched off for some lenses, like the cheapo Yonguno 35mm. In general the speedbooster worked great on Canon glass. For instance, the Canon nifty 50 was vastly improved in terms of autofocus (due to the R7 I think) and the IBIS made it a useful lens (compared to the 50mm f1.4 which was my go to) - I don't see a firmware update for the speedbooster as yet.. so there might be hope for non-Canon lenses

And you also lose light, rather than a decrease in brightness like an extender you lose noise performance by approximately 1 1/3 stops as well. There is no free lunch in optics.

@@johnrus7661 The first part is absolutely correct, however, the second is not. All other things being equal (pixel size& technology of the sensor, distance to subject), if you move from an FF to a 1.6x crop sensor, the only thing that change is the FoV, that is smaller. DOF, brightness, noise performance is the same. You just record a smaller part of the exact same image circle. I know what you mean, that in most of situation, you'll want the same FoV, so you'll either use a smaller focal length or move backyard, both increasing DOF, and aps-c sensor tend to have smaller pixels, that carry lower SNR compared to bigger ones (given same technology of sensors, of course) I know that it is a bit nitpicking, but there is so many people out there that think that a crop factor actually increase the focal length (in the physical sense), or decrease the amount of light being collected. For example, a Sony A7R4 use an IMX455 (FF, 61Mpx, 3.76um pixels), and Fuji XT-3 an IMX571 (aps-c, 26MPx with 3.76um pixels), both being sensors of the same generation and tecnhlogie, they'll behave the same when it come to noise, regardless of the sensor size (unless the camera itself got flawed electronics...). They'll also capture the exact same detail size, so you are not gaining any "reach" with the aps-c one. But many people will have that wrong because of oversimplification and photographer not caring enough about physic (I don't think you are one of them tho)

@Josh_Sattin2 жыл бұрын
In terms of light, yes. In terms of depth of field no. You can't change the F2.8 aperture of the lens. With the speedbooster and the R7 set at F2.0, it will be similar to F2.8 on a full frame camera in terms of depth of field. But not exactly the same because of the new 1.136x crop factor. Hope that makes sense.

Actually yes. Remembering that with a speed booster you'll have to get closer to your subject than with a standard adaptor so you'll create a shallower DoF with the same subject framing.

Yes you can charge the 2.8 on the lens. If you're increasing the FoV but keeping the physical size of the aperture the same it will increase the Fstop value.

Great video. So in terms of Bokeh. I understand that the F2.8 speed boosted to F2.0 on a crop sensor will still give you the Bokeh of F2.8 on Full Frame. But doesn't full frame provide more Bokeh at 2.8 than a crop sensor at 2.8? So is it true that a speed boosted F2.8 on a crop sensor would give you more of a an F2.0 level of Bokeh on a crop sensor for the distance? If not, then it seems the advantage is limited to light and FOV but not bokeh for speedboosted vs non speedboosted for the same lense at the same distance (you can't always move closer)

@Josh_Sattin2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Noise is independent of using a speedbooster. That is determined mostly by the sensor size and the ISO. There are other variables like pixel density, oversampling, noise reduction etc. The one thing that the speedbooster can do to help with noise is that you get an extra stop of light so you can lower your ISO by one stop in low light situations. I think this would work great for astrophotography and could help in any night photography that you could use the extra stop.. Second question. For video, will the R5 shoot video in cropped mode for 1080p and 4k so I could use the speed booster on the R5 with video? My 3rd question you said the purple spot in the middle. I assume this is only shooting into the sun you get this. Does the canon at $600 have less issues with the purple dot and other flaring than the model you tested in this video?

I would probably just shoot full frame on your R5 in low light. The full frame sensor will give you less noise than shooting in crop mode, sort of cancelling out the speedbooster. To make matters worse, Viltrox removed the firmware updates for this adapter from its site and is listing this adapter as “discontinued” because of Canon legal action I suppose, so I’m not very hopeful it will ever work properly with this camera. I tried it with camera firmware 1.1.0 and 1.2.0, and both don’t work. However, in spite of not translating the values, the lens still work properly, AF also works. However, it seems that a speedbooster is far from a silver bullet, as several lenses will not focus beyond a certain distance.
