Great video, really appreciate the comparison on both cams. The R7 continues to be impressive. As a suggestion for another video, maybe explore the R5c's Digital IS as I'm very curious if it also gives the extra IS stops when paired with certain RF lenses. Noise may be higher for each individual pixel as they get smaller, but in that case any given portion of the image is generated from proportionately higher number of pixels. In those pixels signal is correlated (adjacent pixels gather similar signal) but noise remains random. Averaging signal from those adjacent pixels preserves the signal and reduces the noise by canceling it out between pixels. If you have one bigger pixel instead, you end up with noise like in smaller pixel without canceling out but proportionately stronger signal. Signal to noise ratio stays constant. So provided that you use all pixels to generate final image, and all other factors being equal, resolution of the sensor doesn't influence the ammount of noise. Only its size. No magic there. Simple multiplication. Moreover structure of the noise becomes finer in higher resolution sensor making it less noticeable. The problem may arise from more transistors srface comparing to photodiode surfce in higher resolution sensors.

One of the cooler aspects of the test-shots at the 300% was watching your eye. Even though the shots look the same overall, you can tell how much (or little) light was being used by the width of your pupil. That's just a cool touch, intentional or not.

Good video :) I have the R6 and I'm very curious how the R7 compare. In the iso test, it's worth remembering that in c-log/c-log 3 values like 1000/2000/4000 etc. (between the 800/1600/3200/6400 etc.) bring more noise into the image. So you may get a cleaner image with iso 6400 than for example 5000 :)
@Josh_Sattin2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Unfortunately I do not have a R6 to compare. I think you are a bit confused about ISO values. Any time that you raise the ISO, you will increase the sensitivity of the sensor and thus you will increase the noise. The ONLY time the image gets cleaner as you raise the ISO is if the camera has a second base ISO and you reach that. For example, in the A7S3/FX3 any increase in ISO from the base of 640 will increase the noise until you change from 10,000 to 12,800 and you reach the second base ISO. After that it will get noisier again as you go up above 12,800.
@WarszawskiProforma2 жыл бұрын
@@Josh_Sattin I agree in general about dual native ISO, but disagree about the ISO levels regarding c-log/clog-3 :) I recommend watching the video about it by Ben Schubert "How to avoid Noise with C Log | CANON EOS R, R5, R6, 1DXIII". The 18% comes from the paint world since it reflects 18% of the light. The exposure you are aiming for is based on the manufacturer’s recommendations for their log curve, which I believe is around 38% for Clog 3. The R7 can only do every 5% so I set it to 40%.

It would be really nice if they included thay. Recording to Atomos ninja is good but it worries me sometimes because there's no fail safe if the ssd fails. The Eos R can do it but limited to 30min. Thank you for the answer

hello! thanks for your content! I just got an r5c and when I record in xf-avc I can't find the files to copy to the pc, however they are recorded because I see them from the camera. do you know why that happens? in mp4 without problems. I connect the camera directly to the usb-c of the pc until the cf express reader arrives.

I would look around in the folder structure on the memory card. There are lots of folders in there.

Are you recording separately, XF-AVC to CFexpress and MP4 to the SD? It was my experience that I couldn’t read the CFexpress card by connecting to the camera directly. I needed to use a separate reader. Hope that’s helpful.

@@pickleydoo thanks for your help, no, I'm recording everything on the same cf express card, I imagined that it could be that but I needed to confirm it. Thanks

I haven't thoroughly tested it yet. That will be coming in a future video.

I just wish the R7 or R6 or A7mk4 would do DCI format. To get DCI i need to go with Fuji.

Thanks very helpful - I'm a Nikon hybrid shooter, I looked at the R6 but the way it switched from photo to video seemed cumbersome. The R7 seems to have rectified that. My only worry is I need a 20mm full frame equivalent for occasional interior work I get. I don't know if such a lens exists in canon apsc. It will need to be f4 full frame equivalent as well as minimum

Yes, wide options that are native to RF are not available right now. It's a bummer. I would recommend the Canon EF-S 10-18 or the Tokina 11-20. You can use this with the $100 EF-RF adapter.

You can get the Sigma 14mm F1.8 EF, if the price is not an issue or get Tokina 11-16 F2.8. Both need the RF to EF adapter though.

I would definitely choose the R7 over the 90D.

Hi. This was very intersting. I was wondering if you'd be willing to test something out and let me know. You don't need to do a video if you don't want. I'm very baisc when it comes to video. I don't know what most video features even mean and definitely don't do any color grading or anything. I shoot 1080p and just use the footage straight out of camera, only potentially speeding up or slowing down the footage. Currently, I use a Fuji xt2. I went on a trip recently and discovered that I couldn't get any video at all when it was low light. There were two situations. The first, I was trying to get video of an owl at sunset. I was able to get still images with my other camera but it was just nothing but black with the Fuji for video. I was at the max ISO, at the min aperture for that lens (100-400mm), and i was at 1/125 of a second shutter because i was at 60p. As I said, all black. The other situation was in a dining area at night. There were ceiling lights scattered all around, and it seemed very bright to me. But, the Fuji could barely pick up the people at all. Again, I was at max ISO, min aperture for that lens (16-80mm), and at 1/125 second for 60p. I really want to have a camera that i can do wildlife video with (that's why APSC) that will work in low light. Everyone that i've seen review this camera so far have been talking about 4k and clog3, but I don't do either of thise things. Would you be willing to do a little test to see if in 1080 with whatever the setting would be called that wouldn't need any color grading whether the camera would be usable in low light? often with wildlife, folks talk about it being too dark for images but they can still get video. i'm thinking of thise situations but also if i travel and want to get any video of the town or people in low light situations. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. :) Paula

Shooting in a log profile will give you more dynamic range. I only shoot in 4K at this point. If you want to be able to shoot in super low light, I would recommend a full frame camera and some prime lenses. You can also get some basic conversion LUTs to convert log footage to REC-709.
