I’ve been shooting since I was 6 and zeroing my own scopes since about 15 and I’ve been fine doing adjustments in MOA, but struggled yesterday with my first mil scope ever. However, now I know that 10 clicks means a cm, or .39in at 100 yards. Definitely a learning experience and I will likely be buying only MOA scopes from now on.

Matt, I find that is is easiest to mark a sheet of paper with heavy black marker at measured intervals and adjust the scope from 100 yds until the reticle subtends the exact increment I require. Works great with my three Leupold scopes. During deer season I set the thick posts to subtend "deer chest" so if the deer is at 200 yds, the chest covers 1/2 post to post or crosshair to one post. Makes for very quick point blank to 200 yd shots and beyond that can be lasered if the situation allows.

Great video! I have such a bad case of the dumb that I need to keep things very simple so... if 1 Mil = 3.44 MOA (let's say 3.5 to keep it simple enough for me) and i have 1/4 MOA adjustments on my turret then that means 1 MIL is 3.5 x 4 clicks. That is 14 clicks per Mil. Given that both MOA and Mil are angular measurements, magnification etc. doesn't matter, it's always 14 clicks per Mil. So if I'm shooting 2 Mil off then i dial in 28 clicks and job's a good 'un.

Used this method in the past but for live quarry I like to use bracketing its much easier once you get it right, I suppose its like range finding but just using the scope, never lets me down and like the method in the vid its just measuring different quarry between the mil dots to give you its range, its really very simple, but accurate in use. good vid though keep it up.

Very good idea! I feel pretty stupid that this didn't occur to me. I have even thought about re-labelling the turret markings and just accepting the error of individual clicks not aligning, but this is a simple and practical solution that works! So, If i'm looking for a new scope I'd Ideally want one that has turret increments that match the reticle. Can you do a video on how to figure out hold overs for a particular reticle and rifle? I've got an FX streamline currently with a hakwe airmax with a map6 reticle i really don't particularly care for right now. I'm thinking about replacing it but i'd like to learn how to use it in the meantime.

Got my FX Impact Today from Arizona Airguns, It looks nothing like the FX silver from the you tube reviews, why is this? Has the design changed that much? the gun is mostly black , except for the reciever part , that is also not a silver color, but a sort of tan. Also the case is just one long piece and the gun need not be taken apart to store it. the magazines are also different as they hold 18 .22 pellets . Dont know if the super size clip can be installed? Should I be dissapointed or not? Will decide this after I have had a chance to field test it myself. I hope it meets the high standards that you and others have given it, after all, this is a $2,000.00 dollar gun, and the Omega super charger Compressor was about the same. Looking forward to more of your videos, Thanks.

I use Hawke 4-16x50 AO Sidewinder 30 SF Rifle Scope, Illuminated Mildot Reticle, 1/4 MOA, 30mm Tube. Documentation says it's MOA, nowhere it's mentioned in terms SMOA but it also says 1/4 MOA (1/4" click value @ 100 yds). This means it is a SMOA scope?
@AirArmsHuntingSA7 жыл бұрын
+michup86 In my experience, Hawke sidewinders can be way off what they should be... You need to do a turret & reticle box test to see for yourself!
@michup867 жыл бұрын
AirArmsHuntingSA thanks for answer. I actually started to wonder why some scopes use mixed mildot reticle combined with moa turrets and it seems that reason behind it is that moa is more grainer then mildot - gives you smaller move on each click. 1/10 mildot is 0.36 inches at 100 yards. 1/4 moa is 0.26 inches at 100 yards or 0.25 with mentioned shooting moa.

Nice video. Convinced me to buy matching turrets and reticle scopes with a preference toward Milrad. Did I miss it or are you doing a review of your SWFA SS 16x? I can imagine this scope very good for bench shooting, but curious as to how it might be in the field on 50-100 meter shots off hand or field braced. Wondering if it might not be a little jumpy or have a severely truncated field of view. Best regards.

Hey Matt i live in port elizabeth aswell and i have recenly started hunting small birds and i relly enjoy it and i actually got inspired by you. And i was thinking that we could do a colab
@Physics0726 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to do this is the have a mildot scope and a MOA scope. Take the mildot scope and set it to the magnification where its correct (ie 12x) then put a target up like a grid target and have both scopes next to each other. Change the mag of the MOA scope so that its reticle marking are the same size as the mil scope. Once that is done yo can use the MOA scope as if its a mildot scope for hold overs. Can always do it the other way round. Using math should be more precise but you are assuming the scopes are made correctly. Most are not. I have a 6-24x scope where 24x is actually closer to a 14x. So one really needs to makes sure one scope is calibrated correctly. Do not assume that if its says 12x its really a 12x. Or assume that its mildot spacing is actually a true mildot at 12x. Many times it not. This will invoke errors in your math calculations.

Its OK Matt, we Americans don’t fret about magnification so much. After all, if we want to shoot at a dialed in distance, we just grab one of our other rifles that is dialed into that distance. Maybe in a better caliber too.

MOA is probably fustrating use but my math teacher always told me that the more place values it has the more accurate it is. So, the industry rounds it to nearest number to make it easier. 1 inch at hundred yards is just a lie; 1.047 sounds more like it but hoo knows how many more place values it has like ten of thousandths or hundred of thousandth. Numbers don't lie but people do. Therefore, Mil system is more better to use because, how the metric system works.
@nsboost3 жыл бұрын
But… mrad and MOA has nothing to do with metric or imperial. It just so happens they can be related to one or the either. Ironically… MOA optics have a finer adjustment.

Why would manufactures make a mixed unit scope. Simple. There are some very annoyingly informed youtubers (read "you") out there who would be very quick to point out that 10 or 20 clicks on the turret of their scope does not match the reticle. With missmatched reticle turret, no one is making those comparisons. And people aren't returning scopes that have inaccurate adjustments. Hard to tell when mismatched.

true. the fraction system is more intuitive for the simple fractions, but ask a random person on the street, witch is bigger? 3/16" wrench or a 5/32" wrench. ill bet the answers will be 50/50 correct. in metric that question is (about rounded): witch is bigger? 5 wrench or 4 wrench. here they will say 99% correct but think it was a trick question because its to simple :) honestly i love the foot/inch when im gestamaiting where +/-30% dosint matter. but when consistency maters and/or math is part of it the metric system has no real rival
