that's a nice video, but if you have an old PC and you need just a file server for your home network, then installing a lightweight linux and raising a samba share is what you might want to do. Very little resources would be required, linux is pretty safe and reliable, can work months if not years without need to restart (restart after some critical updates would be recommended though). Nextcloud and similar things are required if you need more, like sharing outside your private network

I hear what your saying, but this is a tutorial on how to do it on Windows.

This is a great video for people who feel at home with windows. 👍 As a linux guy, i never considered doing this in windows😄 defintively learned something new!

Ubuntu server would be the way to go, but this is how you can do it if you must have Windows
@sheldonkupa912018 күн бұрын
@Britec09 yupp, you really filled a gap, as most youtubers focus on other OSes. Good job, there maybe a lot of reasons for keeping Windows on that machine!

I hate to say it, but this actually looks a LOT easier to set up and get working on Windows than on a linux machine. Getting docker working properly on ubuntu was VERY difficult

Brian, thanks very much for presenting this. I was able to follow along pretty easily being a somewhat moderately accomplished computer user. I do have a question. When setting up the Next Cloud, how do you identify where you want the database and files to go i.e. an external drive, or second internal drive?

i might do this one day... good stuff

This should have been broken into, (possibly) 3 parts and more detail for those NOT familiar with what you presented here. Since I use all of this, no problem, but for newbies, they would be totally lost.

I agree this is very convoluted for anyone new. Not Britec's best video really does not explain what this is really useful for.
@Britec0919 күн бұрын
"does not explain what this is really useful for" ? I said in the video what you can do with this? watch the whole video.
@tubeDude4819 күн бұрын
@@Britec09 - I did. Don't you understand the meaning of explaining it in a way that a new person could understand? Another guy agreed with me. AGAIN! The way you presented this would be useless to a person that DOES NOT have knowledge of these programs.
@Britec0918 күн бұрын
If they don't understand what this is, they have videos as I showed in the video. If that is still to hard to understand, then maybe its above your level of computing experience
@tubeDude4818 күн бұрын
@@Britec09 What's with YOUR LEVEL! I have no problem with this, AS I said, (if you read my comment), I USE ALL THREE OF THESE PROGRAMS!! They work fine for me since I understand them. Get your facts straight!!

Can you map network drives using this to share across a network with domain users effectively? I understand that Windows typically only allows a max of 20 connections to a file share. Does this get around the limitation?

@SametKaratas-db1xu19 күн бұрын
Multiple users are only if you installed Windows Server (not the original Windows version)
