Turning 8 Point 3 Axis Star Ornament - No Jig Required

Two months ago, I finally turned a star inspired by Theo Haralampo. That star was held up while I designed a jig to facilitate its turning.
I saw this star in the Christmas Ornament Challenge by Patrick Hoggard and wanted to try this style myself.
The starting blank was 2.75" cube of walnut(butternut).
Holes were drilled to accomodate a pen mandrel.
Then turned.
The finials are maple.
No jig other than a common mandrel.

Thanks for the shout out Alan. I turned the 1/4 inch drive chuck out of persimmon and used the Nova live center with 1/4 inch adapter that came with it. Nicely done.

Very nice Alan. I really like that there are no special jigs needed. Both the drive and live center can easily be turned. This one will go into my future project file. Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you Alan. At first look my mind did not see "Star". Then I was occupied with the turning technique. And then I was hooked on the finials. Then, "Ureka", there was the star. It just took a little thinking outside the box. Very well done Alan. I like the contrasting woods. Maple always goes well with walnut. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2024 and stay safe.🙂🙂

Nicely done! I have used the Beall collet chuck with a 1/4” collet to hold the 1/4” shafts. The challenge ornaments are indeed a good source of inspiration.

I entered an ornament into the challenge back in 2016 that has a very similar idea to this one, but I used a face plate and hot glue. This seems like a much more friendly method, really cool

A little to bulky for me but I think with a smaller cube and finer finials it wouldn't be as noticeable. Nice job as always.

It is definitely heavy. but since it does not require a jig for each size, it could easily be smaller. I'm not sure about hollowing it. Hmmm. Alan
