I am glad you showed the applied tip being fixed to a tapered horn- like the originals. Your work screams Southern and I appreciate that.

Clint, Thanks for taking the time to post a most informative video. I would also like to see a start from finish video, but I know how time consuming that would be. Hope to see you at the 25th meeting!

Great video. Thank you. Word of wisdom regarding the dust mask. You only have ONE set of lungs. To get a proper seal only a clean, smooth, beardless face will promote a proper seal. Since you have no family I guess it doesn’t matter… right? 😅

I've made a few horns for myself over the years and wished I had a lathe... Always wondered how the bands and tips were done... Mine are all single piece with hand sanded plugs in both ends... Thanks, Nice work
@hornandfiber45232 жыл бұрын
Thank You! Single piece horns are probably more the norm historically and are right for just about any time period.

I’ve been making powder horns for almost 40 years. Standard but semi fancy. Never made a banded or turned tip before, but very interested. This video is awesome and very inspiring. I would like the link to the horn rolls.

Thank you very much! I order horn rolls from Crazy Crow Trading Post- www.crazycrow.com Click on the “View Products” tab and do a search for “horn rolls”. They should come up. Hope that helps!

What do you use to attach the tip to the horn ?
@hornandfiber45232 жыл бұрын
The tip is both glued and pinned on with three small wooden or metal pins. The glue mostly acts to waterproof the connection the pins actually hold the tip in place. I’m hoping to do a video or series of videos the show the whole horn building process start to finish. Thanks for your question!
@nigelkavanagh20489 ай бұрын
Hi there, new to this channel and love your vids. I want to ask, can you not use the horn tips you cut off too make the plugs for the same flask?
@hornandfiber45239 ай бұрын
I’m sure you could but it would require some work. Historically speaking, spout plugs were usually made from a soft wood such as pine or poplar. They were generally simple: a tapered plug to fit a tapered hole. This allows the plug to still seal well and keep moisture out even as the wood and horn both change due to moisture content.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I’m hoping to do both a “Basic Powder Horn- start to finish” video and a “Southern Banded Powder Horn- start to finish” video. The hard part is just finding enough hours in the day, but definitely stay tuned we’ll get them out there.

@@hornandfiber4523 awesome! Most of the videos out there are on some really plain Jane horns. It would be great to see a series on a horn with some shaping and carving, but not beyond the average person's ability.

Has anyone used a brass garden hose end?
@hornandfiber45232 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure a brass garden hose end would be historically accurate. These banded horns with applied horn and bone tips are well documented to the late 18th and early 19th century. They evolved from the Pennsylvania screw tip horns. As gun making slowly migrated south so did horn work and a unique southern style developed.
