Turning a Ring Bowl with Carbide Tools - Craft Market Series - Episode 1

This week I am turning small ring bowls on the lathe for the upcoming craft market season. I use 8/4 scraps of kiln dried material I have laying around the shop, so there is no material cost to me for these. They are quick to turn and a lot of fun. I am also experimenting with color on some.
I primarily use carbide tools due to convenience. I am no expert but hope to give at least a few pointers in this video for those of you who may be interested.

Great video! but I'd suggest a couple of changes. It would be great if you'd mention the rpm used and give a glance at the tool. You mention what you're using but I'm 80 and my best hearing days are long gone so it's difficult to hear over the music sound track, which I enjoyed. Thanks.

HI, great job on the small bowl. Quick question though. I recently picked up the round carbide tool. When I try and hollow out a bowl like you did i get nothing but catches. Not sure why as I am holding as you are. Any suggestion as to why this may be happening ? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Nice job Nate on the project and video. One day I hope to get a lathe. I see you have a Rikon, are you pleased with it and would you buy it again? I have no idea which ones are good for the price. I would probably buy a HF model to start off with because of the cost. Oh yeah, and I'd buy one of those ring bowls if I walked past you at that market so good on ya. Nice use of scrap and good profit margin!

+Mike Kapotsy thanks Mike! I'm very happy with the Rikon. I think it is a great value. I wish I would've shelled out a little more and got something with variable speed. Check out Penn State Industries, I hear their lathes are a great value as well.

+Sean Rubino thanks, that was my wife's idea. I didn't lacquer the inside because I wasn't sure how it would react with the fresh acrylic and I didn't want it to yellow at all with age. I think the acrylic will cure hard enough to be sufficiently durable for the bowl's purpose. What do you think?

+Nate Crilly probably right. I am not familiar with acrylic paint. Clear spray lacquer doesn't yellow though. Shellac will but not lacquer. That's why it is a guitar finish.

I just got into turning myself. What type of chuck are you using? I really like the paint on the inside. Sets the look apart

how do you avoid making those scratch lines when you sand? Can't seem to finish a piece of wood without sanding lines...

What's the sandpaper you used for sanding through 800grit? The sort of sun shaped ones.
