Very cool Sam. I recently got a stabilizing set up and I've wandered how stabilized wood would work out for thread chasing. Very interested to see more videos from you on stabilizing.

Great project. It would have been nice to understand how you did the grain matching. Maybe you could show us in a different video.

Glad to hear that cherry takes enough resin to thread. I had heard from one thread chaser that many domestic woods were not porous enough and wouldd not take in enough resin. For example, white oak no but red oak, with more open "straws", yes. What other woods have you had good luck stabilizng and then threading? I am about to embark on some stabilizing in order to thread. Happy to learn from your experience. I like your ebony and boxwood magic hammer better than your blue plastic one, LOL.

I have a complete video covering the aspect of lining up the grain. It will be out soon. Perhaps the middle of next week. It goes in to great detail on aligning grain in a threaded project. In this video, I just got lucky and did not really have a chance to show how it is done. Sam

Yes very interest in more details of your vacuum chamber

Yep I think I need to do a video on that. Sam

Very nice Sam. Great project. So was it just the combination of all the final true-up and finishing steps that eventually helped your grain to line up? No adjustment needed to the length of the threads...

Sam, great vid but you just left me hanging at the end on the grain match up. I think I understand what needs to be done to make the grain match up but would have nice to see you trim the box to get it., but again thanks.

Beautifully done. What is the speed of the lathe while you are cutting threads (350 rpm)?

Carter tools as good as they say? Thinking of buying a few. Carter or Sorby for a half inch bowl gouge? If you want to stay out of the. Rand wars i understand.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER7 жыл бұрын
Tom Cost is always a big consideration. I do not have "a deal" with any tool maker that requires my recommendation be exclusive to their tools.....with that said. Even though, my response may be all over the map. I love these tools (not in any particular order). Sorby, D-way, Doug Thompson, Carter, Trent Bosch, I probably have 5 or 6 of EACH of these tools, mostly gouges. Yes I am out of control. I think you can't go wrong with any of them. But in answer to your question, I think Carter may have the edge in my decision. IF, you want to spend the extra money. I usually try to buy the tool steel and then make a handle or use a composite handle I already have. But I really love Thompson tools and D-way. Lots of good choices out there and maybe not much difference in the top 3 or 4. Hope this helps. Sam
@SuperBowser877 жыл бұрын
WYOMINGWOODTURNER thanks for your time Sam. I have used Thompson tools and they are great. I own Sorby tools, Henry Taylor and a couple other big names. I'm hoping whatever I get holds an edge a little bit longer. I think I may buy a Dway and a Carter for my own curiosity. I don't care for the plastic handle and don't think I would like the aluminum but I may be wrong. I will buy the bare tools and make my own handles for no other reason than to save money.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good plan. I do like to make my own handles. They are now making inserts which allow you to remove the tool from the home made handle. Cindy Drozda sells them Sam

You be able to help me i hope if you wanted to inset the lid into the box is there any reason why I couldn't put the male on the lid and the female on the base box. Will this way still work? Can you set me straight please matey
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER7 жыл бұрын
Mumma Toni The best answer I can give you is that it is easier to do the female thread first and then match it up with the male thread. 95% of all projects are done this way. There are a few that are done the other way by chasing the male thread first. But yes it would work, there is just no reason to do it that way. But I am curious why you want to do it that way. SAM

WYOMINGWOODTURNER I am thinking of insetting the lid and making the box really curved thay goes to an inset lid. Mainly as my blank very small likr it 3" square but only 1.5" high hence thinking of insetting the lid. Haha after thought this to you know is not small when you can turn inserts and do urn inserts which will be minute for me as i am not yet at that expertise. Lol being honest
